Jesse Ashcraft Truck Rolls Late in the Race

Using experience, talent and finesse to skillfully guide his high-tech, 850-horsepower SCORE Trophy-Truck, Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren scorched a strong field of challengers Saturday as he overcame heat soaring past 100 degrees, 25 percent humidity and winds gusting to 24 miles per hour to capture the overall victory in the inaugural Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions desert race. SCORE released official results following complete review of vehicle tracking devices.

Sizzling across the parched, sandy, silty, rocky and dusty 252.09-mile desert race course that covered much of the northern part of the Baja California peninsula in the No. 20 MasterCraft Racing Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck, ‘Rockstar Rob’ completed the course in a speedy four hours, 12 minutes, 21 seconds, averaging a spectacular 59.94 miles per hour.

Round 4 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series was held Saturday in San Felipe, Baja, California, Mexico. This race was a replacement for the Primm 300 race that was cancelled this year because of insurmountable insurance issues.

The race started and finished adjacent to the iconic San Felipe arches entering town. A total of 52 of 77 official starters (67.53 percent) finished in 19 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks within the 11-hour time limit in the elapsed-time race. The dramatic 252.09-mile course covered three of the legendary, picturesque and treacherous Baja washes and canyons: Matomi, Huatomote and Chanate before heading back to the finish line at the landmark San Felipe Arches.

For MacCachren, 46, his ninth career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win yielded a winning time that was actually 5:24 faster than when he captured March’s 25th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March on the same desert race course used Saturday. The veteran MacCachren, a six-time all-America motorsports driver including three first team awards, has earned eight SCORE class season point championships in his sterling career. MacCachren is also currently in rehabilitation for a broken left collarbone he sustained will racing in a short course race in Southern California a few weeks ago.

Second overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck was Gary Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore., who finished in 4:21:41, a split of 9:20 behind the winning MacCachren in the No. 98 TSCO Motorsports Ford F-150. Finishing third overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck was series overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck point leader Bryce Menzies, also of Las Vegas, with a time of 4:24:23, a total of 2:42 behind Weyhrich and 12:02 behind MacCachren in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150.

Earning his first SCORE unlimited Class 1 victory and finishing four overall was third generation desert racer Daniel McMillin, National City, Calif., and Chuck Hovey, Escondido, Calif. who teamed to finish in 4:29:23 in a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car.

Completing the top five overall finishers in the race was Clyde Stacy, Bristol, Tenn., who was fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck in 4:32:24 in the No. 18 RPM Offroad Chevy Silverado. The RPM Offroad team had a SCORE-record seven entries in the race.

MacCachren, who started the race from the pole after drawing the first start, battled closely with Mexico’s Gus Vildosola Jr. from right after the start all the way up to race mile 199 before getting back by the No. 21 Vildosola Motorsports Ford F-150 when it was down with a mechanical issue.

“The pace this morning was really quick and the truck was working great at the start,” reflected MacCachren at the finish line. “It just felt so good – we were just really going. When we got up to San Matias, Gus Jr. was getting close and when we pulled in and got gas, he went by us. At about mile 198, we were probably about a minute or so behind him and his left rear wheel came off and once that happened, we got to the other side and started getting reports of where we were and then we just backed down and made sure that we got it in here to the finish line.”

“The biggest difference between this race and the one that we won here in March is that the shocks are the biggest thing. We just keep working on the shocks and making them better and better. The track here in San Felipe gets rougher the more we go over it so it’s all about shocks. These SCORE Trophy-Trucks, you’ve really got to do a good job of prepping them and dot all your i’s and cross your t’s and we’re getting that figured out, I guess. Jimco preps this truck for Robbie Pierce and MasterCraft Racing, and the whole time I’ve been driving it, there really have not been any major failures with the assembly of the truck. The point’s race is not over until it’s over and I’ve learned that many times before. It’s going to be close going into the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 and that’s great.”

Menzies, 23, and MacCachren both have two overall and SCORE race wins in SCORE Trophy-Truck this season and Menzies holds a slim six-point advantage over MacCachren going into November’s season-ending 44th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. MacCachren will make a special live guest appearance Sunday at 6 p.m. (PDT) on the Wind Tunnel motorsports talk show with Dave Despain on the Speed Channel nationwide.

Heidi Steele, San Clemente, Calif. and third generation desert racer Jessica McMillin, National City, Calif., both won their classes as the only two female drivers of record in the race. Steele won Class 6 for the second time this season in a Ford Ranger with help from Rene Brugger, San Diego and McMillin remained unbeaten in the Protruck class in a Ford F-150. McMillin received a huge assist in this race from her father Scott and brother Andy who each drove roughly one-third of the race. Class 1 winner Daniel McMillin is Jessica McMillin’s cousin.

Also winning for the fourth consecutive race was Clyde Stacy, Bristol, Tenn. (Class 4, PSD-Chevy). The racers who won this race to give them three wins in four races in this year’s SCORE Desert Series were: Kevin Carr, San Diego (Class 5, VW Baja Bug) and Justin Matney, Bristol, Tenn. (Class 8, Chevy Silverado).

In addition to MacCachren and Steele, also pulling off their second class wins of the season were Matt Cullen, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 10, AlumiCraft-VW), Arturo Alvarez, Mexicali, Mexico (Class 7, Ford Ranger), Wes Bevly III, Corpus Christi, Texas (Stock Full, Stock Full, Ford F-150) and Emilio Salcido, Mexicali, Mexico (Class 5/1600, VW Baja Bug).

Among the other class winners who won their respective classes for the first time this season were twin brothers Arturo and Abel Velazco (Class 1-2/1600) Zak Langley, Santa Monica, Calif. (SCORE Lite, Smithbuilt-VW) and Reid Rutherford, Montrose, Colo. (Class 7-2, Mason-Chevy).

The Sportsman Car class winner was Peter Lang, Santa Rosa, Calif. in a Homebuilt-Buick, who won his class for the third time this season.

The RPM Offroad team of Bristol, Tenn., had a SCORE-record seven entries in this race. RPM Offroad had its five regular entries in the new Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions--SCORE Trophy-Truck-fourth place (Clyde Stacy), Class 4-first place (Clyde Stacy), Class 8-first place (Justin Matney), Class 11-did not finish (Justin Matney) and Stock Full-dnf (John Matney). They added two additional entries for this race in Stock Mini (dnf) with Justin Matney as driver of record and Class 17 (dnf) with Stacy as the driver of record. The team obviously has several co-drivers to assist the drivers of record but SCORE rules do require that in order to receive points for the race, the driver of record must either start or finish the race which was a unique challenge in itself for the formidable RPM Offroad team.

In four races this season, RPM Offroad has now recorded 10 eight class wins in four different classes and continues to lead the class point standings in three classes--Class 8, Class 11 and Class 4. Additionally, the team is second in Stock Full.

In addition to season class point championships, the racers are also competing for part of the nearly $300,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. Drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are attempting to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 26th consecutive year, a total of 27 drivers remain eligible after Round 3 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series. Racers are also competing for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.

The season finale of the 2011 Desert Series will be the 44th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, to be held Nov. 16-20 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

    ALL RACE TEAMS ARE ADVISED THAT IT IS ESSENTIAL TO PRERUN AND RACE USING THE OFFICIAL GPS FILE. THIS FILE CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE SCORE WEBSITE.

    Early Pre-Run Report


    "We just came back from pre running this weekend and had a couple of things to share     
    The course was well marked odd thing was the internet map showed mile markers with odd numbers and course markers were marked with even ones ,so when you are looking for RM15 keep going because the next marker is going to be RM16 marker and so on ,ignore the odd numbers on the map you will not find them.
        Same old course a lot of fun nothing too bad except the Hauatamote wash, if you thought it was bad going down this year it goes up, at RM 192 we had to get out and move rocks by we had hand four people and it took a half hour before we could pass in four wheel drive on race day it will be a problem .
        It is a right hand hair pin turn going up giant rocks so we filled in the holes with small ones but those will be shot out by mid race.     
       
    If you are pre running bring some crow bars and Johnson rods to pry and move the big ones out of the way we could only move the 400lb ones but there are some larger ones that can be moved by tools or even better by a winch, keep in mind anything you move now will stop you from having to move them on race day while your car is parked behind the rest blocking this only way thru and stopping anywhere before this point is only going to get you stuck TAKE SOME TIME NOW TO PREVENT THIS instead of on race day .     
    If you dont want to move rocks look for a spot that you are going to park your car before this point because you will be using it instead of racing your car.
        Chris Wilson started a thread in the shop section called I” Hate the Hauatomote wash” read it is no exaggeration take some time out now to move rocks and not on race day, nice job of marking the course Chris.
        Be pre paired to get stuck in the sand and silt from RM202 to 215,bring shovels and straps,maybe some nitrogen so you can re inflate your tires in 15 miles    The rest of the course is the same old same old no big deal.     
       
    At RM 220 there is a Cattle crossing grate ,there is a dead cow with its leg stuck in it.    At RM235 there is a Y in the road I found an old score marker saying check point 4 with arrows sending you in the right direction I put that back up hope it stays there but if not stay to the left and in about a half mile you will see current mile markers.
        This is going to be a fun race and I hope some will help with the Hautamote wash now instead if dealing with it on race day because the TT will block it for everyone, your dead if you have to stop behind this point and unstick the leader Plain and Simple.     
       
    At RM 220 there is a Cattle crossing grate ,there is a dead cow with its leg stuck in it.    The weather wasn’t too bad 106 * bring twice as much drinking water as you think you need, pre running and on race day….don’t take this for granted.
        San Felipe has grown tremendously but like everywhere else the economy has hit them hard, everything was reasonably price and service and hospitality was great.    Be Safe and don’t over heat yourself.
    If cow parts are your thing there is a dried out cow at Morelia junction being used as a road sign. We startled four different live cows standing against canyon walls for shade and as we came around the corner and they ran in front of us so be aware    There were a couple of dead cows on the south part of the course; I found one that had been set on fire and only leaving the scull.
        I didn’t know the technicalities of trying to cross the border with a cow scull so I put it a white trash bag and stuck it in the Ice chest with all the floating cans from the week end, that was the only question they asked at the boarder “what’s in the ice chest? “We answered red bull Gatorade and Coors lite, he told us to go.
         On race day it would be a good idea to have some chase trucks at the top of the Hautamote wash with winches to unclog the track as well as the sand and silt in the same area this ares is at VCP 11& VCP 20 on the score map chase roads are at the end of morelia road."

    Vegas' Rob MacCachren Draws First SCORE Trophy Truck Start For Inaugural Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions.
    Round 4 of five race SCORE Desert Series will be fourth race this season in Mexico, Sept. 9-11.
    LOS ANGELES—Las Vegas’ all-America desert racer Rob MacCachren has drawn the first starting position, based on Saturday’s computerized drawing, for next month’s inaugural Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions. Round 4 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be held Sept. 9-11 in San Felipe, Baja, California, Mexico. The computerized drawing for starting position, by class, was held at SCORE headquarters in Los Angeles.
    The race replaces the Primm 300 race that was cancelled this year because of insurmountable insurance issues.
    With late entries expected up to race morning, nearly 125 entries are expected for the new race, for 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks, that will run over the same course that was recently used for this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March of just over 250 miles.
    The veteran MacCachren, 46, who is a six-time all-America motorsports driver included three first team awards, has earned eight SCORE class season point championships in his sterling career and he was the overall winner in this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March. He drives the No. 20 MasterCraft Safety Racing Ford F-150 in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 850 horsepower unlimited production trucks. Including this year’s first San Felipe race win, MacCachren has eight career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins.
    “It’s always great to start first and it’s always fun to be part of something new, even if we are very familiar with the area and the race course,” said MacCachren. “San Felipe is one of everyone’s very favorite places to race in the desert and we look forward to putting on another competitive race for the throngs of appreciative race fans down in Mexico. Of course I will miss not racing Primm in my home state and near my hometown, but there are things happening we have absolutely no control over and if we can’t race in Primm, I can’t think of a better place than Mexico and San Felipe.”
    The race will start at 7 a.m. (PDT) Saturday, Sept. 10 and the start/finish line area will be located adjacent to the iconic San Felipe arches entering town. Vehicles will leave the start line one every 30 seconds in the elapsed time race. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish the 250-plus mile course in approximately four hours, 15 minutes, and all vehicles will have an 11-hour time limit from the time each starts to become and official finisher of the race.
    Pre-race festivities will be held on Friday, Sept. 9 on the picturesque malecon boardwalk along the Sea of Cortez in the heart of San Felipe. The colorful SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway will be held on the malecon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (PDT) and pre-race safety inspection will be held on the malecon from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Driver and media registration will be held at the Hacienda Don Jesus hotel two blocks off the Malecon from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. (PDT) on Friday, Sept. 9 as well. The post race awards celebration will be held at 10 a.m. (PDT) on Sunday, Sept. 11 in the plaza in the heart of the malecon.
    Among the other drivers drawing first starts for this new race are Justin Davis in the Unlimited Class 1, twin brothers Arturo and Abel Velazco in Class 1-2/1600, Sergio Salgado in Class 10 and Rafael Navarro IV in SCORE Lite.
    SCORE Trophy-Truck had the most entries at the time of the start draw Saturday with 15, followed by Class 1 with 10.
    Winning two of the first three series races overall and in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division, Las Vegas rookie driver Bryce Menzies leads the points in the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series.
    Menzies, who opened the season by winning the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in January, drove to a penalty-free victory as well in June’s 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500 to assume a commanding lead in the SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck point standings in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150. Sandwiched between his first two career SCORE race wins in the marquee racing division for high-tech, 850-horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Menzies finished sixth in SCORE Trophy-Truck at the 25th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March.
    SCORE points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class, Menzies, 23, who had only raced the 2010 SCORE Baja 500 where he finished seventh in his first start in SCORE Trophy-Truck, has 243 championship points following Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series. SCORE Trophy-Truck has had the largest starting field for all three races with 32 in Laughlin, 24 in San Felipe and 28 in Ensenada.
    With two wins and a second so far this year, second in overall points and leading the unlimited class 1 is Justin Davis, 18 of Chino Hills, Calif., just three points behind Menzies with 240 so far. Davis, last year’s SCORE Lite point champion, won Class 1 in Laughlin and San Felipe and was a close second in Ensenada driving the Green Army Motorsports Chevy-powered ESM open-wheel desert race car.
    Picking up his eighth career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in San Felipe, Las Vegas Rob MacCachren, an eight-time SCORE season point champion, is third in overall and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck points so far after finishing fourth in Laughlin and ninth in Ensenada with 227 points.
    Following consistent seventh, fifth and fourth-place finishes in the season’s first three events, Gary Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore., is fourth in overall points and third in SCORE Trophy-Truck with 214 in the No. 98 TSCO Motorsports Ford F-150.
    Tied for fifth in overall points with 205 is Mexico’s preeminent son-father team Gus Vildosola Jr. and Sr., in the No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 (fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck) and Damen Jefferies, Apple Valley Calif. in the Jefferies-Chevy (second in Class 1).
    The RPM Offroad team of Bristol, Tenn., has its five regular entries in the new Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions: SCORE Trophy-Truck (Clyde Stacy), Class 4 (Clyde Stacy), Class 8 (Justin Matney), Class 11 (Justin Matney) and Stock Full (John Matney).


    In addition to season class point championships, the racers are also competing for part of the nearly $300,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. Drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are attempting to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 26th consecutive year, a total of 32 drivers remain eligible after Round 3 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series. Racers are also competing for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.

              LOS ANGELES—SCORE International confirmed today that the next race of five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be the new Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions to be held Sept. 9-11 in San Felipe, Baja, California, Mexico.  The race replaces the Primm 300 race that was cancelled this year because of insurmountable insurance issues.
         The new race, for 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks, will run over the same course that was recently used for this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March of approximately 250 miles.
         After executing the event agreement today in Baja California with SCORE President/CEO Sal Fish, Francisco Perez Tejada Padilla, Mayor of Mexicali stated that, "The cities of Mexicali and San Felipe are pleased to announce that SCORE has decided to continue supporting Baja California by adding another race to their calendar in Mexico. This shows the great communication achieved by the Federal, State and Municipal authorities with Sal Fish. We are pleased that SCORE recognizes our previous hard work and continues to have confidence in our support. This new race will become the epicenter of desert racing during the month of September."
         Fish stated that, "While SCORE regrets ending a 16 year relationship with the Primm Valley Resorts and Las Vegas Events, we are pleased to open a new door with Mexicali and San Felipe and provide our participants with an exciting Baja racing challenge in the friendly, relaxing and scenic city of San Felipe."
         Elaborating on the cancellation of this year’s Primm 300, Fish confirmed that, "The sole reason for the decision was due to insurance requirements and cost. The Primm entities dramatically increased the liability insurance requirements for the event, which made conducting the event cost prohibitive."
