GM wraps Hummer Off-Road racing life

The 2008 desert racing season was a big year for Team Hummer, as a sweep of the stock classes in the SCORE series and the Best in the Desert Racing Association's series. The last event, December 6, Team Hummer secured victory and sealed their place in history.

The stock full SUV class was secured by Chad Hall in the H3 Alpha, while brother Josh Hall finished on top of the stock full truck class in the H2 SUT. Rod Hall, who was the victor in the SCORE International stock mini class, earned his fifth BITD stock mini class victory with his H3. Team Hummer is the first team in history to sweep the stock class championships in both SCORE and BITD in a single season.

Notably, a Hummer was the first stock class vehicle to finish in eight of 10 races in 2008, including the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. The race vehicles are now for sale and factory funding is over.

Baja Raptor Experience at the Detroit Auto Show

By: Tom Greenwood

If you're looking for free fun at this year's North American International Auto Show, make sure you make a beeline for the Ford Motor Co. display. While most of the other auto companies seem to have toned down their interactive displays, Ford has raised the fun factor with four free offerings. If you're in the mood for some amazing sleight of hand, be sure to watch the machinations of magician Bill Malone, who will not only mystify you with his card tricks, but will have you laughing yourself silly as he interacts with his audience.

If you really want to have some fun, strap yourself into the F-150 SVT Raptor Experience, an interactive video ride that simulates racing a Ford F-150 through the Baja Peninsula. Complete with howling engine noises, the cockpit jumps, bucks, dips and swerves so realistically that all riders are required to strap themselves in with a seat belt. The Baja Raptor thing is way better than the Mustang Alley. If you loved the chase scene in "Bullitt," where Steve McQueen made a Mustang do everything but deal cards, then you'll flip over the audio/visual display at Mustang Alley. You can enjoy the growl of an exhaust and the howl of a finely tuned V8 engine as it shifts through all four gears.
