Adding to the McMillin family legacy, San Diego’s third-generation desert racer Andy McMillin drove hard enough and consistent enough to earn the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck class victory Saturday at the 49th SCORE Baja 500. McMillin, 30, drove to victory over a tremendously tough 513.76-mile race course, finishing in the No. 31 McMillin Ford F-150 in 10 hours, three minutes, four seconds, averaging 51.12 miles per hour. After qualifying fifth on Thursday, McMillin quickly drove to the front of the voracious pack of world class drivers, earning a victory margin of three minutes, 26 seconds over Justin Matney, Bristol, Tenn., who finished second overall in 10:06:36 at 50.83 mph in the No. 4 RPM Racing Chevy Rally Truck. For McMillin, whose cousins Dan McMillin and Luke McMillin were also racing in their own SCORE Trophy Trucks, it was his third class win and second overall triumph in the SCORE Baja 500 and his ninth career SCORE Trophy Truck race win. Luke finished fourth overall and in class while Dan finished 15th overall 13th in SCORE Trophy Truck. Storming back from a 19th qualifying run, Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren, who won the season-opening 31st SCORE San Felipe 250 in April, deftly drove himself up to the final spot on the podium with a third-place overall and SCORE Trophy Truck finish in the No. 11 MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150, just 15 seconds behind Matney in 10:06:45 while averaging 50.81 mph.
THE FIELD: In addition to 28 U.S. States, racers came from 13 total countries. In addition to the USA, racers from Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands and Spain were part of the field.
FINAL CHECKER: When the race course officially closed on Sunday morning at 8:06 a.m., 149 of 233 starters (63.9 percent) completed the radically rugged course within the 20-hour time limit to earn their coveted official finisher medals and status. Both the start and finish line were located once again in the heart of Ensenada on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center.
ARREDONDO WINS MOTO OVERALL: Riding the No. 45x Chris Haines Adventure Co. Honda CRF450X, Guatemala’s international rally racer Francisco Arredondo and his four-rider team raced to the overall motorcycle victory. A multi-time age-group class winner, Arredondo earned his first SCORE overall motorcycle title as well as his first win in the Pro Moto Unlimited class.His teammates were Shane Esposito, Temecula, Calif./Justin Morgan, El Cajon, Calif. and Roberto Villalobos, Dulzura, Calif. The talented quartet finished the grueling race in 11:04.52, averaging 47.09 mph. The team finished second at the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250 in early April. ANDY REMARKS: Enjoying his victory celebration at the finish line, Andy McMillin commented, “The hardest part of this race was the distance and the different types of terrain. It was really gnarly. Getting over to the beach it was super mountainous and rocky. It was wide-open along the beach, then up over the mountains to Valle Trinidad. The deserts in San Felipe and the whoops are so gnarly. The truck drives differently in different types of terrain so adjusting your driving style is tough. Keeping the truck on the course is important. We had one flat tire in San Felipe when we took a line and punctured the right rear. Luckily we had a pit a couple of miles up and we nursed it in.”“The heat today wasn’t too bad but nothing like last year. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been coming down here to Baja with my family that has been SCORE racing for 40 years and being the first vehicle to finish is something not a lot of people get to experience. When you are the first one coming through like I was today and all the fans are screaming it is a lot of fun.”“The team was great and the pits were flawless. Everyone was right where they needed to be. To win is really a team effort and I just drive. I’ve got my co-driver Brady (Thompson) who calls all of the corners and all the dangers and keeps me in check.”
NINE OF TOP 10 OVERALL SCORE TROPHY TRUCKS: Nine of the top 10 overall finishers in the race were from the SCORE Trophy Truck class. The one that wasn’t came from the new SCORE TT Legend class for drivers over 50 years old.Finishing fourth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was San Diego’s Luke McMillin, Andy McMillin’s cousin, with a time of 10:21:04 in the No. 83 McMillin Racing Ford F-150 and fifth overall was Mexico’s Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (Tecate) with a time of 10:28:20 in the No. 1 RPM Racing Chevy Rally Truck.Finishing sixth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was the team of Larry Connor, Miamisburg, Ohio and Ricky Johnson, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. in 10:28:59 in the No. 6 Chevy Silverado and seventh was Germany’s Armin Schwarz in 10:29:32 in the No. 9 RPM Racing Chevy Silverado.Ninth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was Cameron Steele, San Clemente, Calif., in 10:33:07 in the No. 16 Monster Energy Chevy Silverado and 10th was Chris Kemp, San Clemente, Calif. with a time of 10:49:58 in the No. 93 Chevy Silverado.
SCORE LEGEND 8TH OVERALL: Cracking the top 10 overall at eighth and winning the new SCORE TT Legend class was the iconic Larry Roeseler in the No. 96 Safecraft Chevy Silverado in 10:33:07. One of the winningest racers in SCORE history, Roeseler, 60, of Martinez, Calif., drove solo to his 17 class win in the SCORE Baja 500 which includes 11 overall victories in this race.
20 FOR O’NEAL: Three racers in the prestigious group of returning multiple class winners in the SCORE Baja 500 added to their respective trophy cases with class wins again in the SCORE Baja 500. Elias Hanna won the Trophy Truck Spec class for his fourth class win in this race.Veteran age-group motorcycle racer Jim O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif. earned his race-record 20th class win (all on motorcycles) by leading a team in the Pro Moto Limited class.The third racer adding to his winning legacy in the SCORE Baja 500 was Pancho Bio, Spring Valley, Calif. (Class 11, Stock VW Sedan) for his sixth class win in this race.
THE UNBEATEN: In addition to O’Neal, four other racers remain undefeated after winning here at the SCORE Baja 500 following their class wins at the season-opener in San Felipe. Broc Dickerson, the 16-year old rookie phenom who is a second-generation desert racer won for the second straight race over 17 starters in the competitive Class 10 in his Chevy-powered Alumi Craft open-wheel desert race car.Elias Hanna, Ensenada, Mexico won on his home desert over a field of 17 starters in Trophy Truck Spec in his Chevy 1500 for his second win of 2017.Also winning for the second time were Jose Carassco, Rosarito Beach, Mexico in the Pro Ironman motorcycle class on a Suzuki RMZ450X and Juan Dominguez, Yuma, Ariz. won Sportsman Quad on a Honda TRX450R.

So much talk about the Ampudia brothers in the SCORE press release, makes us wonder that the reported and rumored sale of SCORE to the Ampudia family IS TRUE?
"With just 20 seconds separating the top qualifiers, Ensenada’s home-grown Ampudia brothers posted the fastest qualifying time Thursday to earn the first 4-wheel vehicle starting position in Saturday’s internationally-televised 49th annual SCORE Baja 500.Entries from around the world are officially entered in Round 2 of the 2016 SCORE World Desert Championship, being held this week in Mexico’s Baja California Norte, starting and finishing in Ensenada, the seaside port on the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of San Diego.With Aaron Ampudia, 24, the youngest of the three brothers driver of record, middle brother Alan Ampudia, 26, drove the 2.98-mile desert qualifying course near Uruapan, 24 miles south of Ensenada with oldest brother Rodrigo Ampudia, 32, riding as passenger in the team’s No. 10 Ford Raptor to a fast time of three minutes, 36.80 seconds at an average speed of 49.48 miles per hour. The Ampudia brothers will lead a field of 37 SCORE Trophy Trucks into the desert over a rugged race course of 513.67-miles."
"The Roger Norman SCORE Draw-Pull" and "Qualifying"
The announced "SCORE-International Draw" for this race, were hand chosen by race sanction owner, Roger Norman. There was no actual "pull". On Thursday, June 1, qualifying for starting positions was held for the 'Trophy Truck', 'Trophy Truck Legend', the unlimited 'Class 1' and 'Trophy Truck Spec.' classes only. Qualifying was held on a special course near Ensenada and was not open to the public. The 'start drawing' or "pull" for these classes has determined their respective qualifying 'start order'. It's complicated and simple, Roger tries to control everything.
While the majority of the entries in these top classes are expected to qualify, those who elect not to will be given the remaining start positions in the elapsed-time race based on the original drawing or entry into the race within their respective classes. Qualifying is closed to the public because of safety concerns.
"Drawing" the first for the qualifying runs in their respective classes were Casey Currie in SCORE Trophy Truck, Matt Cullen in Class 1 and Lee Banning in Trophy Truck Spec. Trophy Truck Legend for drivers over 50 years old will qualify and race with Trophy Truck 'equipment', but will be timed in their own class. You know, old-guy stuff!
2017 Version of this Desert Off-Road Race
The race event is 515.77 miles in length, at 20 hours in time duration at Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

The racing has staggered starts as the green flag will drop first on Saturday (June 3) for the motorcycles and quads at 5:30 AM (PDT) and approximately 10 AM (PDT) for the cars, trucks and UTVs.
From the press release: "This race event will feature a race course, hand chosen by Roger Norman along with Race Director Jose A. Grijalva, of approximately 515 miles. It will run in a counter clockwise direction. The first and last 19.5 miles will be shared course outbound and in bound. Starting and finishing once again in the heart of Ensenada in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, it will quickly leave the pavement and head-up the spectator-friendly Ensenada Arroyo for two miles as it heads out of town. The event includes high-speed dirt trails, sandy,rocky and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to over 3,000 feet."
Reflecting on the course, Grijalva commented, “This course is tough and very technical, more rain damage than other years and it's long with over 465 miles on the dirt, leaving less than 48 miles on pavement. The course from Jaramillo to San Telmo Road and up to Rancho Coyote has not been raced for many years and will be new to many racers. There is also a new trail we will race on after the Goat Trail that has never been raced on before.”
This race course encompasses five physical checkpoints—North of Johnson’s Ranch, Morellia Junction, North of San Felipe on Highway 5, Nuevo Junction and El Mezcal before Ojos Negros. It also has approximately 95 virtual checkpoints. There are also 14 speed zones (37 miles per hour or 60 miles per hour) for a total of 55.53 total miles of the 513.67-mile race course.
This course is different than last year’s course. Last year it had much more desert, it went up the Summit (exposing the racers to record, life threatening and life ending - heat, which killed two competitors last year!) and this year it goes to the coast. There are also sections that haven’t been raced on for a number of years and a few sections that SCORE has never race on before. Other towns and landmarks the course goes through or near are Ensenada Arroyo, Piedras Gordas, Ojos Negros, Uruapan, Santo Tomás, Erendira, Johnson’s Ranch, Colonet, Jaramillo, Hacienda Sinaloa on San Telmo Rd., Rancho El Coyote, Mike’s Sky Rancho, San Matias, the Diablo Dry Lake bed, San Felipe, Valle de Trinidad, The Goat Trail, Nuevo Junction and Santa Catarina.
The race has a 20-hour time limit from the time each vehicle starts to become an official finisher.

With qualifying for the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks and the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars and Trophy Truck Spec, 34 of 37 entries in SCORE Trophy Truck, four of 13 entries in Class 1 and 13 of 17 entries in Trophy Truck Spec ran in the qualifying session.
The vehicles that didn’t qualify will start at the back of their respective classes. Second-fastest qualifier was Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin in the No. 97 Monster Energy Toyota Tundra in 3:38.24 and third was Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies, in the No. 7 Menzies Motorsports Ford Raptor in 3:38.42. POST-QUALIFYING QUOTES:
B.J. BALDWIN, No. 97 – I like the qualifying loop a lot and this particular loop caters to my driving style. There are lots of blind rises and lots of areas to get into trouble. I’ve just been focused on doing a little bit better in qualifying and I think we did a little bit better today. I always want to win qualifying but the best starting position is probably fifth or third maybe. I’m not really happy about our pre-running and I’ve been trying to get down here a little bit earlier. I’ve had a lot of stuff going on with sponsorship programs and other obligations that have prevented me from coming down here and getting as much pre-running as I needed to get. I know the course really well. I love the BAJA 500 and the BAJA 500 loves me and I’ve always done pretty well here as long as everything stays together. I think I’ve been second here four times and I won it in 2008. It has been a good race for me.
ROBBY GORDON, No. 77 — I’m pretty happy with what we did there. It looks like we might get beaten by Apdaly (Lopez #1) which is impressive and good job by him. The passenger side GPS didn’t fire up and we got off line into the bushes pretty big so I can see how we could get beat. The most important thing is that the car is in good shape and we can let it rip from here. I’ve done a lot of pre-running over nine days and we’ve been around everything three times. I feel like I know where I’m going for sure. To come back to Baja is always good. The dirt side of racing is the most fun because it is about you and nature and your ability out there. It is a little hard to spectate but it is the best kept secret in racing. I think the rocks going up Mike’s are going to be interesting for everybody and I believe that guys are going to have to be smart in the San Felipe section because you aren’t going to be able to beat the car all day long. I think we are well prepared.
JUSTIN LOFTON, No. 41 — I was a little skeptical on our parade lap and I don’t know if it was just because it was the first time being out in this area and not knowing what to expect. We were really able to get this truck on the pipe and it was a lot of fun. It was a great course and I’m really enjoying my first time down here at the BAJA 500. I feel confident in our pre-runs because we’ve run some areas two and three times. I feel good about our course markings. It is an amazing course and I love running down the coast and up over MONSTER Mike’s Rancho. You get a little bit of everything down here. This is the second race on this truck and though the first race wasn’t so great for us so we’ve done a lot of work on it. I think we’ve got it tuned in.
ROB MacCACHREN, No. 11 — Momentum (after winning the SAN FELIPE 250 and the BAJA 1000) plays a part of anything. Momentum is a huge part and I think it keeps everybody on the up and up and everybody is excited. We want to work hard and keep the good results happening. I like this race though we have gotten second in the race for the last two years in a row so we would like to improve on that. The loop down by San Felipe is the same as what we just raced on in the San Felipe 250 so it is very rough. It has been tight and technical and the first 80 miles has a lot of rain ruts to watch out for. We go through Santo Tomas and head out to the Pacific and again there’s been a lot of rain that has washed away the dirt so there is a lot of rock. I think tire wear is going to be an issue for some. A lot of the race is just keeping your truck together for the first 200 miles or so. I’m excited to be here and love racing in Baja. I love the people and we have a lot of great fans.
TAMMY STEELE, No. 16 — We tried some stuff and to be honest we might have been too hooked up and a little too sticky. Coming down the back-straight there were some pretty good berms and it stuck too much. Overall I’m happy that the truck isn’t hurt. In San Felipe I went out and tried to qualify in the first five and here I tried to qualify in the first 10. We have a different cadence going for this race and are trying to get more into our BAJA 1000 mode. We are testing things on the truck for the BAJA 1000 and I feel strongly about the package we are bringing. Pre-running has been great. Spending time in Baja with the local people who are so friendly, excited and so cool so we’ve had a great experience again. I’m not too concerned about anything but there are some hills out there that are deteriorating and it is mostly because people aren’t using their brains while pre-running. If everybody just pre-ran at a nice calm pace and didn’t slide through all of the corners it would be better on race day. I’m going to solo the 500 but I have a backup with Johnny Campbell who is obviously a legend down here. He’s going to navigate for me and be a backup driver. I’m not a big fan of having to do too much of the slow highway and at this race we are going to have almost an hour at 37 miles per hour. Sometimes that can lull you out of your game.
GUSTAVO “TAVO” VILDOSOLA JR. — It is a long race and last year we started 12th and were able to finish third physically and first on corrected time. Qualifying to us is to not make mistakes and have a clean run. Unfortunately today, on the back section coming into the wash where you go around the tree, I made a mistake and I think it cost us a couple of seconds. Other than that we had a clean run and hopefully it puts us in the top 12 again like last year. We know we can come back from that. Our pre-runs have been successful and it is always nice when you set a plan two weeks ahead with what you want to execute each day and you are able to execute the plan. That rarely happens in this sport as there are a lot of variables. The pre-run has been perfect and I think we’ve gotten over 2000 miles in and we are still going to do the start again. We’ve got a little bit more homework to do but we are going to be ready for Saturday. As long as I don’t have to pull the net down except for at the finish line we’ll be good.
LARRY ROESELER, No. 96L — We’ve had limited test time leading up to this and there are a lot of new things done to the truck. It feels really good and I think it is going to race really well. We made some really nice changes to it but we are still sorting out some things. Qualifying is really important but I wish I could have had more test time leading up to it. I think we got through it okay. It is a great race course and in 515 miles we have literally everything to deal with. You’ve got to pull the reins back and there are times you can let the reins go. The pre-running has gone really well and I’ve put a little extra effort into it. The level of competition has risen and you can’t take anything for granted down here. Knowing every rain rut and rock and every little zig and zag is important. GPS helps these days but I don’t really rely on that because I’m still of a motorcycle mindset. I get focused and do my thing. There is no shortage of bumps in the San Felipe section and I’m really glad I’m in a Trophy Truck. It is really brutal. I pre-ran in a RZR, I pre-ran on my motorcycle and I pre-ran in my truck and I don’t care what you run those bumps are big. It is going to be demanding on everybody.

""In order to reduce risks for competitors and spectators, municipal authorities and organizers of the Baja 500 race, determined controlled speed points for pilots, both at the start and on the road sections.In accordance with the Score International rules, the team that exceeds the limits will be disqualified. Marco Arturo Durazo, specified that the first point where the pilots can not exceed 37 miles per hour, is located at the height of the offices of Mexico Post. It is suspended until the stream in the area of the Ramp. The restriction is activated, also at 37 miles in the Clearance. Also, in all sections of the road the speed will be 65 miles. Marco Arturo Durazo reported that the speed is verified by satellite and warned that "the riders are warned that, if they exceed it, they are disqualified." He emphasized that it is a question of reducing the risks and that controlled speed is one of several prevention measures being taken.""

""A contingent of 100 municipal police officers, as well as personnel from different corporations, will participate in the security operation during the Baja 500 race. The head of the Municipal Public Security Bureau (DSPM), Emilio Camarena informed that the prevention actions, will be added personnel commissioned in the six delegations that are part of the route.In addition, he said, the corporation's special groups will focus on areas identified as conflicting. The director of public security warned that citizens who do not respect the rules, will be referred to the Qualifying Judge. He specified that they could be punished for causes like "skidding", consuming intoxicating drinks, driving with speeding, among other causes." The barriers will be placed in the most critical points that were defined during the previous tours, and special care will be taken in the 'blind curve' that they detected in the Amber Avenue. Likewise, the Federal Police will participate with nine units, in addition to the personnel of the stations Mexicali and San Quintín.
Road crossings: Federal agents will focus on road crossings and sections where vehicles are at controlled speed. Juan Tintos Funcke, from Score International, reported that to date, has 230 teams registered, indicating that they will exceed 240. He said that there will be participants from 15 countries and 24 states of the American union and said that the race will be broadcast live on social networks. He emphasized that the marshals will be Ivan "Steel Man" Stewart and Mexican fighter Rey Mysterio, who will give the departure flag to the participating teams. The exit is scheduled for motorcycles at 05:00 hours on Saturday. Sunday will be the awards ceremony.""

BULLETIN DATELINE ENSENADA - A retired teacher, who owns a childcare facility, and his wife were kidnapped and decapitated in Ensenada in a incident marking a new precedent in the violence which has occurred in recent years. The information has started to circulated officially this morning and has greatly concerned to inner circle of teachers. From people close to the victims, it is known that last week they were kidnapped and ransom was demanded.
