5.7 Scale Aftershock Wakes Up SouthEastern California Overnight
Cell phone service was knocked out overnight, boulders rolled onto Interstate 8 and Southern Californians this morning are talking about the "quake". Numerous aftershocks measuring less than 5 on the scale are continuing to shake the desert region, north and east of the original Easter temblor.
LIVE ! News Report: ""An earthquake measuring 5.7 magnitude shook the Southland Monday, and it was felt throughout the southern California area. Hundreds of aftershocks continued to rock the area through Tuesday.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 9:26 PM PST, centered near Coyote Wells, California. It was originally reported as a 5.9 magnitude, but was later downgraded by the U.S.G.S.

Mexicali has been in a "Red Alert" since the quake, Monday. Cell service was knocked out in western Imperial County. Several 'red tagged' building in Calexico, collapsed after the quake. In Palm Springs, phone services were disrupted. On Interstate 8, boulders were reported in the highway, after the quake.

- 43 km (27 miles) W (277°) from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico
- 104 km (65 miles) E (79°) from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Cal Tech says the earthquake was actually an aftershock itself, from the massive 7.2 earthquake that hit the same area on Easter Sunday.
"Aftershocks become less frequent with time," said Cal Tech Seismologist Kate Hutton. "But they don't shrink. They don't get smaller necessarily."
Hutton says it's likely we'll continue to feel aftershocks for some time.
Power outages were reported in some areas in the Valley following Monday's quake, though it wasn't immediately clear how many homes were affected.
Within minutes of the strong quake hitting, Baja Racing News.com fans let us know that they felt it on MySpace:
"LOL me and my dad sprang up. I bolted between two walls and my dad rang outside," said Anna Altheide. "It was quite hilarious."
"It was a little hard to miss," Andie Palm Springs said.
"Yikes I guess so ...looooooong roller ..." said Betty Zaslawsky.

"Glasses rattling in the cupboards, blinds swaying, my car alarm chirped," said @wnoble.
"Definitely felt it in LQ! It rolled for a pretty decent amount of time, too," @KaylaHamel said.
More than 9,000 people from California, Arizona and Mexico had reported feeling the quake to the U.S.G.S. by 10:40 p.m., using the 'did you feel it' feature.""

The Easter Baja Earthquake has done so much damage in Baja California Mexico, in and around Mexicali, the capital of the state, that thousands are now in shelters. The broken roads and widespread damage throughout the Mexicali valley will impact the citizens of Mexicali for months.
In the adjacent American city, Calexico, 90% of the historic district has been red flagged. Deemed, not habitable. Structural damage has made the buildings dangerous to reside in. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Imperial County.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was the
largest event to strike this area since 1892. The 1892 Laguna Salada Quake destroyed the Carrizo Stage Station and was felt throughout the west. Even the boom-town of Los Angeles had some damage during the 1892 shaker! The Laguna Salada fault is a probable southern continuation of the Elsinore Fault Zone in from Southern California USA, and is related to the San Andreas fault zone complex. All within the massive southern San Andreas Rift Zone.
