October 22 Baja North sections of race course
Most surface streets in the towns of Tijuana to El Rosario were still wet Sunday afternoon. Much of the region beyond town, in the course sections south of Ensenada to Catavina were still wet, Sunday afternoon.
Some race course sections south of El Rosario received heavy, scattered rain, which caused some vados and arroyos to run.
Another low pressure system, this one from the north, will produce colder air temperatures and more heavy scattered rains into El Rosario, starting Tuesday, October 23.

BAJA 1000 BITTEN! State Declares Disaster! La Paz receives Record Rainfall, Most in 26 Years!

La Paz to Loreto took 5 hours, with numerous water crossings and three bad road breaks. Traffic back-ups don't help, but that's what happens when thousands of people need to travel on the heavily damaged single paved road between two points.
Construction repairs, over 90 miles, regular travel time is up an average of 2 hours, including delays at the military stop.
Conditions in town, Mulege: Electricity is up and running on the south side of river and the water is running as well. Service outages locally where lines are down or broken respectively.
October 20 Damage Reports
Roads into Lopez Mateos are closed - both from Insurgentes and the back way through Benito Juarez.
Road south of Puerto Escondido/Ligui washed out but was passable this morning. Travelers left Tripui this am for La Paz in a pickup truck. Very rough just south of Ligui and headlight deep water in Insurgentes but they made it!! They will be returning tomorrow and will update the report then.
Road north of Puerto Escondido to Loreto is out. Large sections of road missing between Juncalito/the Mirador and Clam Shack. OK from Nopolo/Loreto Bay to Loreto. State crews are working on it. We have heard estimates from 2-5 days to repair. Will report when it is open.
Power is back on in Mulege Centro, but sketchy, 187 volts on the 240 volt circuits, and power crews working all over. Telephone is out in sections due to poles & lines down; on in town center generally. Water is not on yet. This a.m. crews reinstalled the new 100 hp pump donated by Rotary International recently (they had taken it off the well head), but have other work to restore water service. Should be on in town maybe later today. For other areas will depend on line breaks.

Earlier: The state government of Baja Sur (South), began to respond to the damages and future threats from the effects of Hurricane Paul. The storm, impacted large areas of the state, south of San Ignacio.
Suprisingly, the longest term health threat is mosquitos.
You can die from a bite, due to dengue fever.

October 18: City of La Paz Notice:
The city of La Paz has announced an aggressive spray program in the hopes of averting an outbreak of Dengue fever. Fumigation by malathion will be increased in the evening hours in select neighborhoods. In the past public announcements of neighborhoods to be sprayed has appeared in advance on the radio and newspapers, but this isn't much use to gringos who are espanol illiterate. Following the double hurricane hit in 2003 Dengue reached near epidemic proportions in Baja Sur.
Residents have been urged to clean up standing water in their yards, to make sure their tanacos (water cisterns) are bug proof . In the past the city has handed out little packets of sterilizer for these cisterns, of which nearly every home in La Paz has at least one. A couple of tablespoons of unscented bleach will also sanitize the tanks, but using bottle water following either treatment is recommended.

Again, this action is to avert an outbreak of Dengue following the wettest summer in La Paz in 26 years. Although Dengue is not usually fatal, the malaria like symptoms are no fun at all.

Roads throughout the state are problematic. Some larger arroyos and vados are still running with water.
Ice and some other commodities will soon run out in areas cut-off by broken roads. The state announced today actions to rebuild the brken roads and ensure communities don't suffer any longer than two weeks.
Earlier: Now Tropical Storm Paul's circulation is moving away from the BAJA 1000 2012 race course, its impacts will lessen over time. South of San Ignacio, along the Pacific coast, winds and the impacts of several storm systems over the last several weeks, have continued to make travel on the race course, hazardous. Some sections have received large amounts of rainfall, making the area roads deep with mud and liquified sand.
Care should be taken using area access roads and many of the local heavily traveled 'paved' roads are now broken and some are impassable.
