Racers in San Felipe 250 from Southern Baja Mexico
With renewed vigor and new objectives, the Baja South team of Valerio Gonzalez Coppel Motorsports front, is preparing a new experience: competing in the International Serial Score scoring in all three events.After earning the title of State Champions Championship Off Road in Southern Baja California, and after accumulating and three titles in the top flight, the objectives have grown and Championship Score is definitely a great option to continue to demonstrate the competitiveness of the team .
It's not easy competition that occurs for the team, and will enter fully into the big leagues of the powerful Trophy Truck category, or also called the "Monsters of the Desert", where international riders competing great fame, ability, experience and skill.
Rody Amaya Jr., is another rider who joins this project and who will open the team's participation in the first race of the Serial, we know the quality of the pilot with resounding victories and records in times of Baja California Sur, and now is the time to demonstrate that quality to the great drivers that are already registered when the Trophy Truck.
The team also prepare to participate pilots John Cota Leon and Jorge Santiago Dominguez, regulars serial drivers in local and international participations behind in several Baja 1000 races.
Coppel Motorsports team will undertake this important mission with two race cars, as well as known as the Trophy Truck team Coppel, it will participate in the team's fast and pilot recognized BCS Francisco "Chico" Villagomez who will be looking victory in the Class 12 Score Lites category.
Villagomez already knows the triumph in the Score International Championship, just remember who won the race complicated Laughlin Desert Challenge, and well remembered Baja 1000 where he was teammate Justin Davis in Class 12.
The adventure begins with the next race and San Felipe 250 to be held from 8 to 10 March, in a demanding route that tests and especially handling the suspensions of vehicles.
The second race will be the traditional Baja 500 in its 45th edition will be held from May 31 to June 3, at the port of Ensenada, BC and characterized by the roughness and gaps complicated area.
The third and final race of the Serial is undoubtedly recognized as the "Mother of Racing Off Road: The Baja 1000", which this time will only gaps in Baja California, starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja Ccalifornia, Mexico, which will be held from the 14th to 17th of November, 2013.

The field includes racers from 14 of the last 15overall motorcycle winners as well as 15 of the previous overall 4-wheel vehicle winners in San Felipe. Also entered are 19 class winners from last year’s race and 20 of the 2012 SCORE Desert Series season class point champions.

SCORE Trophy Trucks have won 16 overalls in San Felipe in the 19-year
history of the class. Southern California’s Mark Post/Jerry Whelchel in
1997, San Diego’s son/father team of Andy and Scott McMillin (2005) and
Armin Schwarz (Germany)/Martin Christensen (Denmark) (2010) have the
only three Class 1 wins since SCORE created the featured SCORE Trophy
Truck division in 1994.
In the first 26 years of this race, Honda has earned 16 overall
motorcycle victories (including 14 of the last 16 years), Kawasaki has
six, KTM has three and Husqvarna has one.

March 4 UPDATE
PRE-RACE SCHEDULE
The pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and tech inspection of the vehicles in the race will be held on Friday (March 8) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the picturesque Malecon, flanked by the Sea of Cortez on one side and the popular restaurants and night clubs of San Felipe on the other. Racer registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday (March 8) at the Hacienda Don Jesus Hotel. Open to the public for the first time, the pre-race mandatory racer’s meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday (March 8) at the plaza in the heart of the Malecon.
THE MAIN COURSE
The spectacular 254.0-mile race course runs in a counter-clockwise direction and starts and finishes at the landmark San Felipe arches. The race course goes north of Highway 3 for one of the first times ever in this race, covering over 100 miles up to the south end of Laguna Salada and back. Another major change in this year’s course is that the Zoo Road crossing has been moved west to a safer area where the terrain is more technical than the traditional high-speed ‘whoops’ which will slow the race vehicles down in an area of high spectator concentration.
The race course also includes three of the infamous Baja washes—Huatamote, Chanate and Amarillas before heading to the finish line. The course includes nearly 50 virtual checkpoints to help insure the safety and the integrity of the challenging race course.
MONSTERmania…
Festivities will start on Thursday night in the start line area at the San Felipe arches with a special SCORE launch party. Open to the public with a $2 donation to Mexico’s Cruz Roja (Red Cross), from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. there will be a racer autograph session followed by the celebratory party at 7 p.m., which will be fueled by Monster Energy Drink and Tecate.
COURSE ’CAP
Pre-running is allowed on the actual race course from last Friday (Feb. 22) through Friday, March 8.
The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three and one-half hours later after the last Sportsman ATV by the car and truck classes at approximately 10:30 a.m. The start line and finish line for the race is scheduled to once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 12-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
HISTORYonics
The season-opener of the 2013 SCORE Desert Series, the MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, annually provides a greater economic impact to San Felipe than the popular six-week-long ‘Spring Break’.
The race began in 1982 and was not held between 1985 and 1989, the first five years of the seven-year combined High Desert Racing Association-HDRA/SCORE Desert Series of US and Baja races. It has been held consecutively each year since 1990.
In its first 26 years, the race has been held in San Felipe all but 2007 when political issues forced a last minute move by SCORE, starting it in Ensenada and finishing it in Santo Tomas. Ironically, 2007 saw a race-record 394 starters and a race-record 288 finishers even though the race was moved and the course changed just 10 days before the event. The records when the race actually started and finished in San Felipe are 341 for starters in 2006 and 220 for finishers, also in 2006.
ON THE BAJAscope
In its 40th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization in 2013, the three-race 2013 SCORE Desert Series, with all three massive special events held in Baja California, Mexico, starts with the 27th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Both starting and finishing in Ensenada, the other two events will be the 45th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 (May 31-June 2) and the 46th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 (Nov. 14-17).
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF DESERT RACING
The 2013 SCORE Desert Series will also be part of the quickly-evolving World Championship of Desert Racing, which will combine points accumulated in the three SCORE Baja races along with points earned from three of the four-race 2013 HDRA Series, all held in the United States. Both the SCORE and HDRA series will crown their own individual class and overall point champions as well with a bonus purse for those racers who qualify for the World Championship of Desert Racing points bonus purse program to earn a desert racing World Champion title.
With a growing total, for the inaugural World Championship of Desert Racing bonus purse, an official total of $45,000 has been posted to date from new SCORE sponsors Amber Racing Services ($25,000), King Shocks ($10,000) and Rigid Industries ($10,000).
For car and truck classes with at least five starters in each qualifying race in 2013, the World Champion titles will be decided on combined points from the three SCORE races and three HDRA races with the bonus purse paid using the same formula based on total purse and number of starters in each class as is used currently for each SCORE race.
For the pro motorcycle and ATV classes, the World Championship of Desert Racing will include points earned in the three SCORE Baja races as well as the AMA National Hare and Hound race to be held during the HDRA Reno 500.
MORE AWARDS
In addition to season class point championships and World Championship titles, the racers are also competing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. There are also annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year Awards including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Award that also receives a $2,000 cash bonus and custom-made driver’s race suit.

Baja Safari San Felipe 250 Travel Tips
A new Android mobile app that helps motorists figure out the best time to enter the United States at crossings from Mexico and Canada. “Best Time to Cross the Border” is a new service that is accessible on the Web – http://traffic.calit2.net/border/ – and also as an Android app via https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.calit2.ports the Android Market (aka Google Play).
Border crossers can also search for the Android app under the name “Best Time to Cross the Border” in the Google Play store. Border wait times are compiled by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and updated hourly.
The developers at UC San Diego download that data within minutes so users of the Android app or the related Web site – http://traffic.calit2.net/border/ – can click on any border crossing and see current waits for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and even pedestrian queues where they exist. . Expect delays at the Mexican - US border due to "Sequestration"
"Sequestration"
refers to proposed across the board cuts that will impact every single
agency within the US federal government, including Customs and Border
Protection, FDA and USDA. Assuming, the proposed sequestration moves
forward this Friday, we know that CBP will lose their overtime budgets
and furloughs will be in place starting April of this year. As stated by
DHS Secretary Napolitano at a recent Senate Hearing:

flow of trade and travel at our nation's ports of entry, including many
ports represented by members of this committee."

Border Patrol and Customs reports operations between the ports of entry will experience significantly longer wait times for arriving passengers at large land border crossings. Average wait times to clear customs will increase by as much as 50 percent, from normal operating traffic flows.
As previously reported on Baja Racing News, the update from large ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border, wait times are likely to increase to [as much as] five hours or more during peak times, “functionally closing these ports during core hours.” Further, this means decreased hours of operation for some small and medium-sized ports of entry: “Mid-sized and smaller ports would experience constrained hours of operation, affecting local cross-border communities.”

Officially launching one of his many positive new initiatives for his newest desert racing series acquisition, Roger Norman announced recently that racer registration for the new SCORE Desert Series has begun online.

First event of the new era of SCORE International will be the 27th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race in March. SCORE is celebrating its 40th year of the world’s foremost desert racing organization in 2013. With 40 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs.
The LIVE! Racers Drawing ONLINE will be February 12, with complete coverage by Baja Racing News RADIO LIVE!
The race itself will be held March 8-10 in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico, kicking off the festivities of the 40th season of SCORE International desert racing. In order to be included in the start drawing, entries must be received with full payment by next Monday, Feb. 11.
Official entries received after the drawing will be given the next available starting position within their respective classes and late entries processed after March 1 will be accessed a $250 late fee. “We have made the commitment to ourselves, our racers and our sponsors to improve on the foundation set so solidly in stone by Sal Fish for our sport and online racer registration is a key element in that progression,” said Norman, a businessman turned racer turned race organizer. “This first major step of total online racer registration is a tremendous start for the new SCORE and I have to salute my wife Elise who has worked so diligently to integrate the elements of this new service to fit our needs for racer registration to make it something quite remarkable.”
“Remarkably, Elise got it done in warp speed which seems to be how we are doing everything right now. The SCORE system for online racer registration is extremely user friendly and allows the racer to even go back into his or her personal file to edit information as needed.”
The new SCORE online racer registration system requires full payment of all entry fees based on four levels for cars and trucks, depending on the type of class a racer is attempting to enter and two for motorcycles and ATVs. Payment is accepted via credit card with payment by check allowed although with a check the entry is not official until the check is received and processed by SCORE.
DIRT LIVE"Roger Norman’s Dirt Live one-hour weekly show" is broadcast live on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Pacific Time on the SCORE website. The show content is centered around his two desert racing series, the SCORE Desert Series and the High Desert Racing Association as well as the new bonus points program he has developed called the World Championship of Desert Racing.

ON THE BAJA HORIZON In its 40th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization in 2013, the three-race 2013 SCORE Desert Series, with all three massive special events held in Baja California, Mexico, will start with the 27th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, to be held March 8-10 in San Felipe. After San Felipe, the SCORE Desert Series will move to Ensenada for the 45th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500, May 31-June 2. The season finale, also in Ensenada, will be the 46th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert races, Nov. 14-17.
