Saving his best performance for his second-straight season-ending Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 victory, Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin has risen from this year’s dusty desert battles with the world’s best desert racers to earn his second straight SCORE Overall season point championship as well as he fourth SCORE Trophy Truck class point title in the last eight years.
Entering the season-finale at the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in fourth place in his class points, Baldwin drove solo brilliantly over the brutally-rugged 883.1-mile course across the northern part of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula, to win the iconic race that was held on a course that was generally called the roughest loop course in the 46-year history of the event.

Prior to the race Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies was leading the points, Mexico’s Gus Vildosola was second and Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren was third. While Baldwin stayed on the gas, Menzies had mechanical issues that resulted in a ninth-place finish, Vildosola had a rare did-not-finish with an engine failure just over half-way through the race, and MacCachren and Baldwin survived the test with Baldwin winning and MacCachren, who had San Diego’s Andy McMillin as his second driver, finished in second place in the race.

With the title, Baldwin, 34, became just the second driver in the 40-year history of SCORE desert racing to win back to back SCORE Overall season point championships (Jim Summners won three in Class 1/2-1600 in 1981, 1982, 1983). Baldwin has now won the SCORE Trophy Truck season point titles in 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013. And with his most recent win, Baldwin now has six career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins in the 20-year history of the sport’s most magnificent racing class.

Starting the season with a 12th-place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, Baldwin rebounded with a second-place finish behind Robby Gordon in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and then clinched his championship with his Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 victory on Nov. 16. For the second straight season he climbed his way back to the top of the leaderboard, driving the No. 1 Monster Energy Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado, in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks.

MacCachren, 48, a two-time SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion and six-time AARWBA Motorsports All-America racer, drives the No. 11 Rockstar Energy MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150 and finished second in 2013 in SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck season points, just five behind the winning Baldwin.

Menzies, who drives the No. 70 Red Bull Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy Truck, completed the podium sweep by Las Vegas racers, ending up third in SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck points, just two behind MacCachren and seven back of Baldwin.
Roger Norman’s SCORE celebrated its 40th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization in 2013.

With 35 starters in San Felipe and 37 in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and 31 in the grueling Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, SCORE Trophy Truck ended with six racers in the top 10 in SCORE points.

While SCORE racers come from all over the world with a heavy concentration of racers from Southern California, Las Vegas racers captured four of the top six overall point positions in the SCORE Overall and four of five in the SCORE Trophy Truck point standings.
SCORE points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class.

Sixth in SCORE overall and fifth in SCORE Trophy Truck points was Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst, who teams with Ryan Arciero, Foothill Ranch, Calif., in the No. 91 Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150.

BROTHER’S WILSON
By winning Class 10 at the season-finale in Ensenada over a field of 20 talented starters, brothers Brad and Brian Wilson, Long Beach, Calif., with driving help from Kyle Quinn earned the first SCORE season point championship for Brad Wilson and also finished the year fifth in the SCORE Overall point standings. The Wilsons drove a Wilson Motorsports Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car to earn the title.

CLASS 1
Continuing to establish himself as a great second-generation desert racer, having moved out from the shadow of his father and his uncle’s experienced tracks, Southern California desert racer Cody Parkhouse continues captured the unlimited Class 1 in a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car for the second consecutive year. After opening the season with a Class 1 victory and a fourth place finish in at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, his third place finish in the season-ending Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 secured him the 2013 Class 1 point title. Cody Parkhouse ended 10th in overall points and won Class 1 by just six points over a pair of teams who tied for second Justin Matney, Bristol, Tenn., in a  Geiser-Chevy and Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif./John Herder, Tucson, Ariz. who drove a Jimco-Chevy and tied with Matney for 13th in the 2013 SCORE Overall point standings.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF DESERT RACING
The 2013 SCORE Desert Series was also part of the inaugural World Championship of Desert Racing, which combined points accumulated in the three SCORE Baja races along with points earned from three 2013 HDRA Series, all held in the United States. Both the SCORE and HDRA series crowned their own individual class and overall point champions as well with a bonus purse for those racers who qualified for the World Championship of Desert Racing points bonus purse program to earn a desert racing World Champion title.

For the inaugural World Championship of Desert Racing bonus purse, an official total of $45,000 has been posted from new SCORE sponsors Amber Racing Services ($25,000), King Shocks ($10,000) and Rigid Industries ($10,000).
For car and truck classes with at least three starters in each qualifying race in 2013, the World Champion titles were decided on combined points from the three SCORE races and three HDRA races with the bonus purse paid using the same formula based on total purse and number of starters in each class as is used currently for each SCORE race.
For the pro motorcycle and ATV classes, the World Championship of Desert Racing included points earned in the three SCORE Baja races as well as the AMA National Hare and Hound race that was held during the Eldorado HDRA Reno 500.
MORE AWARDS
In addition to season class point championships and World Championship titles, the racers are also competing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race.
