Tijuana city authorities closed the access to the vehicle bridge which connects El Chaparral with the Vía Rápida, Otay and Avenida Internacional, due to a failure detected this evening.
The bridge separated some 6 inches at the base, a situation which caused panic with some drivers, who reported it to the authorities.
A police patrol vehicle blocked off the bridge with its lights to avoid the circulation of automobiles which arrive at the bridge after crossing the border.
A few minutes ago, mayor Jorge Astiazarán Orcí and personnel from Urban Development toured the bridge to evaluate the risk and then decided to close the bridge which was inaugurated during the term of former President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.
The bridge was not properly built, it does not have any flexible joints between the bridge and the roadway. This bridge will be out of commission during the entire BAJA 500 travel period. Perfect timing!
