RACE UPDATES LIVE!

Monday, October 4, 2021:

Statement from BajaRacingnews.com:

Special Thanks to Hotel California Tequila for supporting this webcast, we hope more companies will join in and support the local organizers to support the sport, of Baja South!

Statement from the organizers:

Special Thanks to Mobil Gasolineras for supporting this event, we hope that more companies will join in this sport, undoubtedly the most popular in Southern Baja Mexico!

Last weekend the South Californian off-road reactivation race was held, which, after 18 months of inactivity due to the Covid-19 pandemic, finally ended with the off road fast in an event that was characterized by an excellent participation with 142 vehicles that received the green flag in Cabo San Lucas and 53 motorcycling teams that did the same in the race of approximately 230 km that had Rancho El Tojilar as its goal and finish line.

Also known as “La Pata de Gallo” or “El Rancho del Bus”, in the capital of BCS, La Paz. A grand total of 195 teams that went out to have fun at a major sporting event. The mechanical review was carried out following all the protocols of the pandemic requested by the authority, as well as the face-to-face support of State Civil Protection and COEPRIS, who were aware of the development and monitoring of protocols on Saturday, October 2 in the parking lot of the Cultural Pavilion of the Republic, located in the Cabo San Lucas Marina, Los Cabos municipality.

On the day of the competition, participation grew to a large extent in late registrations to the event, just as some abandoned the intention to participate, others were "riotous" raising almost 20 more vehicles than those that were raffled on Thursday, September 30.

Motorcycling was no exception with 53 units that also increased registrations by almost 30% prior to the weekend. The competition was developed with an excellent atmosphere, the faithful love of dust and adrenaline from off road competitions, was present throughout the competition's route, in an evident example of the “off road thirst” that we lived.

In Baja South, where the entire family stepped out to watch the parade of machines in their hurry, filling with action and excitement what is undoubtedly the largest and most passionate community of sports fans practiced in our state. Regarding the results, there were pleasant surprises such as the overall triumph (best time of the race) for the Monterrey runner Rafael Aguirre, who aboard his Class 10 marked with 1022 and sharing the wheel with Adrián Sauceda for the second half of the competition, who with a firm step and good handling, managed to stay behind Sandy Hall for almost half of the competition, stopping the second hand in a "time" of two hours, 19 minutes and 34 seconds, which gave them a great victory with a guardian angel on board…. In homage to "Chico" Villagómez.

From days before the competition took place, the team of runners based in "La Sultana del Norte" showed on their social networks the design with which they would see action in the Mobil Pacífico 300, highlighting an emotional collage of photos of the late runner Josefino Francisco "Chico" Villagómez, in a clear tribute in memory of who was one of the great idols of Class 12 and ultimately Class 1 in the off road "Choyero", a recognition of the trajectory of "Chico" who, according to Aguirre's own words, was taking care of them all the way, achieving an overall victory in the purest “all or nothing” style of Villagómez by the Chuky's team. The team carried out an emotional visual tribute in honor of Francisco "Chico" Villagómez, capturing in the vehicle a collage of photos of the Josefino pilot who beat us in the gap of life last July, paying tribute and exalting the memory of “Chico” Villagómez upon obtaining this spectacular result from the “Chukys” team rider who intend to continue participating in the Southern Baja with that competition vehicle. In the Trophy Truck Class, after a fiery battle along the route, José Luis “Chelis” Rosas Polanco was the winner of the just reactivation of the off road Calisureño, ending without brakes after hitting some stones in the last kilometers of the race, so they reached the finish line without being able to stop completely.

Chelis makes his debut in the stellar category with a victory, continuing the preparation of the CJR Motorsports team (formerly Balazo Jr. Generation) for this year's Baja 1000. Rosas Polanco stopped the clock at 2:40:29. Sandy Hall achieves victory again in Class 1, just as it did in the 2020 Total Coastal 250, the last race organized by Probaja before the pandemic arrived ... Hall prevails in this 300 with a mark of 2:25:34.

Todd Willie does the same in Class 8 with another victory for the American team that has held the category championship on several occasions, in one of the categories that surprised the most in the starting draw where up to 15 riders were registered . Willie finished the race in 2:40:47.

Sergio “El Pulga” Ojeda did it again… The rider Cabeño gave another great demonstration at the wheel of his “hot dog” in Class 16, beating his rivals by stopping the clock with a time of 2:35:44 and becoming a turn into the fastest car of the restricted categories of this Mobil Pacifico 300. “La Parka” by Raúl Burgoin was the first Class 7 vehicle to appear for the checkered flag at the finish line of the Bus Ranch, Burgoin obtained an outstanding result and won with an 18-minute margin over his closest pursuer, sealing the victory at 3:02:43.

Class 29 was the most surprising in terms of participation for this re-start of the Calisureño off road, 22 competition units received the green flag in Cabo San Lucas, thus becoming the class with the highest participation in the event, surpassing categories 16, Stock Mini and 7SX, which are the ones that usually register the highest participation. Jorge Vela's team “La Mamba Negra” was the one who crossed the finish line in the first place after having started in fifteenth position, a great result that is to be celebrated, culminating in 2:30:25.

“Don Black” from the brothers Cinthya and René Núñez came out victorious in this race with a good participation in the 7SX Class, where as always there was good sports fighting and good “piques” along the route. René and Cinthya finished with a time of 3:06:47. Gilberto Rodríguez also gave something to talk about in this Pacífico 300 with one more victory for the runner based in San José del Cabo, who finished the test in 3:29:32 to win the victory after almost 18 months of inactivity "Racing" in our state.

Jesús Javier Pérez was the winner of Class 8 Stock who finished the test with a time of 4:06:40 to become one of the winners of this Mobil Pacífico 300. In Class 9, the duo of "El Pirata" and "El Piratita" Saiza gave again what to talk about, in a great race, the Cabeño runners (father and son), conquer the sweet taste of victory, dividing the route half and half placing himself on the checkered flag with a time of 2:49:29 to lift the winner's laurel. For his part, Julio Cesar Verdugo, the third generation of Escudería Calafia Airlines debuted in Class 15 with a great race in a “piquesón” with Cinthya Torres to finish gracefully in first place, stopping the second hand in three hours, twenty-nine minutes and forty-one two seconds, an excellent result for the young rider who has “off road poison” in his veins.

Antonio Hernández “Toñito Paletas” returns to the gap with a great participation stopping the finish clock at 3:05:04 to claim the Stock Buggy Class winner, where in the end there were 9 participants who received the green flag, one of the categories that he has been climbing in the races organized by Probaja with a good level of competition, vehicles and drivers.

The triplet of Carlos “Chipi” Salgado, Jorge Romero and “El Pollo” Ortiz also gave something to talk about in the reactivation race, where they raise the laurel of winners in 3:10:13 to become the fastest in the super class 11, one of the most stock categories of the championship where the drivers put on the hero cape after traveling the route in the worst conditions in the classic Baja bugs. To close the list of winners appears the 1481 of Marco Antonio Medina, who on board his Cherokee manages to rise to the top of the podium of the 14 in a technical race that provided handling, expertise and terrain mistreated by the climatic conditions of the last weeks in the South Californian geography.

This closes the participation of this event together between the AEABCS, Probaja, Club Coyote Pits, Club Automovilístico La Paz, the BCS Motorcycling Promoter and the ASMAC, a joint effort that required a lot of condescension, support, reciprocity and spirit of collaboration, bringing out an event for the first time in a group as broad as all the organizations were in the same event. Thank you all for collaboration! Thanks also to Mobil Gasolineras for supporting this event, we hope that more companies will join in this sport, undoubtedly the most popular in Southern Baja Mexico.

Sunday, October 3, 2021

When you look through the pics and vids from the start, you'll notice the somewhat dry driving surfaces. Just a week ago, the after effects of Hurricane Olaf were still on the ground. Lots of water! However, with just a short time and lots of heat and sunshine, the arroyos of southern Baja soak up all that rainfall, runoff and flooding.

Lots of deep, packed light colored sand and granitic alluvium.

We overnighted at Todos Santos, readying for the re-start and finish of the race event, to La Paz. The official start of the race is now underway at San Lucas, 6AM.

Saturday, October 2:

From the start line of the Pacifico 300, 1PM: Reviews have been pushed to 1PM. Misting at Los Cabos, with potentially heavy weather for later today.

The scheduled race is timed for 6AM-6PM.

Today, desert off-road racers will green flag from San Lucas and run to Todos Santos to a timed finish.

Sunday's racing (Sunday, Oct. 3) will take the competitors from the "Magic Town" of Todos Santos to the Capital of Off-Road, La Paz, Baja South, Mexico.

The Los Cabos to Todos Santos race-course has a great deal of technical, ranch-road driving at the start to middle of the day.

The majority of this first section of course is in the foothills of the western slope of the local mountains, with lots of canyon crossings and very low tree overhangs.

At times the drive has the characteristics of mainland Mexico rally driving. This is desert racing, in the tropical deciduous forests of southern Baja Mexico.

The soils are mostly granitic in nature, like the open deserts of northern Mexico, with an amazing amount of topographic sculpting by the huge amounts of rainfall this area receives on an annual basis.

Decomposed granite alluvium is the common driving surface, on the completely unengineered ranch roads in the first section of this racing event.

The unpaved/dirt roads here are not engineered. They are developed/made simply by using the natural lay of the land to determine the surface and course of the direction of travel.

At times, at speed, the roads here feel like you are flying in air. However, because they are not designed for wheeled travel, you can easily destroy your vehicle and kill yourself and anyone else in the race rig.

Over many ridges on this race course, its very easy to reach unsafe speeds and fly over an edge, that would send you hundreds of feet through the air, impacting on very unforgiving, walls of Baja rock!

In between Cabo and Todos Santos, the record for one days rainfall was established. Over 24 inches of rain, in one day, the record! An inch an hour for one full twenty four hour period.

The soils act as both 'sponge', soaking up the rains and sometimes the landscape looks like 'cake', edges and canons falling away as the heavy rains carve up the terrain.

The ranch roads here can be closed due to running water during and after storms.

Deluge rainfall is common here in the late summer, early fall. Chubascos and tormentas (brief heavy storms) are common. Hurricanes and tropical storms occur throughout July to November.

One can clearly see the rainy weather's impact on the landscape.

Out of the foothills late, the course flattens and speeds into the coastal plains of Pescadero and Todos Santos.

Pescadero, a large agricultural area south of our overnight, the course rolls over heavily used ranch roads, used daily by locals for their work in the fields and farms of the southern part of the La Paz municipality.
