Lamentable Fire Ends Toby Price and Paul Weel's 2022 Baja 1000 desert race in Mexico

A horrible incident has ended Paul Weel and Toby Price’s Baja 1000.

Toby Price and Paul Weel are out of the 2022 Baja 1000, after their AWD Mason Trophy Truck burst into flames.

Footage has emerged on social media of their #46 Trophy Truck engulfed in flames.

Weel and co-driver Preston Schmid were the occupants at the time, with the racers able to get out of the vehicle.  The pairing were contesting the first 360 miles (580km) of the classic desert - off-road racing event and were planning to hand over to Price and Kellon Walch to bring it home, when disaster struck at 170 miles (273km) into the Baja race.

“Pretty heartbroken for Preston Schmid, Toby Price, and Kellon Walch, and the partners and our whole crew”, Weel posted to Instagram.

“Everyone has put a lot of hard work and time away from their families to prepare for this race, so it sucks we won’t have a result.  “Glad everyone is ok which is the main thing”.

Price and Weel sealed a strong-starting position for the off-road race, after securing a fifth-place finish in the September running of the Baja 400 off-road race.  The squad enjoyed a solid pre-run of 10 days leading up to the event and were confident of a strong showing.
