The bivouac in Riyadh has become a familiar sight for the competitors throughout the first three editions in Saudi Arabia, but this special is all new. In the first part, the field will weave its way around picture-perfect valleys in the heart of the mountains before tackling a wide-open desert. To wrap up the intense programme of the first week and give the drivers and riders a well-deserved rest, the final two hundred kilometres will take place on fast tracks. Time to take stock of a sensational week of racing. And weather!

Weather Pulverizes Dakar Rally Schedule 2023
BIKE - QUADS RACE: STAGE 7 CANCELLED!
-Effectively, a "light" marathon ahead with the new program for SS7 and SS8 for all the Competitors (but it's not been called that by the Organizers).
Logistically,
they have to re-arrange stages due to the foul weather in saudi and the
now flooded Al Duwadimi Bivouac. Current forecast predicts more rain in
Riyadh. Hard core with the actual Marathon stages 11 and 12 ahead next
week.
-Faced with the weather problems experienced again today and the level of tiredness observed among all the riders in the category, the Dakar organizers have decided to cancel the special for stage seven between Riyadh and Al Duwadimi.
The bikes and quads will therefore be invited to leave the bivouac in Riyadh from 10 AM (saudi time) tomorrow morning and take the road section to Al Duwadimi. On Sunday 8th January, they will then contest stage 8 as the 'Dakar Classic'.
Reworked Stage 7 Route
This
stage runs the gamut from undulating regions to sandy plateaus and
stands out for its varied terrain, starting with pebbles and progressing
to formidable chains of dunes later on. It's a gruelling course is a
valuable opportunity for the podium contenders to bring down the hammer
on their rivals. Category: Bikes - Quads CANCELLED - Cars - Light Prototypes - SSV - Trucks - Classics Stage 7: Liaison: 528 km / 328.08 miles Stage: 333 km / 206.91 miles

AL ATTIYAH, TOYOTA IN COMPLETE CONTROL
The race was turned on its head when both Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz crashed their second and third placed Audis heavily at the same point 212 km into the day’s stage. Peterhansel’s navigator Edouard Boulanger hurt his back, eliminating them from the race. Sainz and Lucas Cruz were left stranded in the desert as they waited for back-up to arrive.

(AP)-
Defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah extended his lead of the Dakar
Rally when he won the sandy fifth stage on Thursday. Al-Attiyah’s
second win in the northern Saudi Arabia desert in the first week gave
him a 22-minute gap on eight-time champion Stephane Peterhansel and 27
minutes on local driver Yazeed Al Rajhi. Al-Attiyah imposed himself
about halfway through the 374-kilometer loop course around Ha’il. “We tried to really push like crazy,” the Qatari said.
“We took a lot of risks. The other teams have more power and more
horsepower but I’m happy to finish today without any problems. It’s very
hard because the base is that we’re pushing a lot and we are really
tired.” Sebastien
Loeb was close to Al-Attiyah until he made a mistake on a dune, hit a
big clump of camel grass and rolled his ProDrive on its side. The car
was OK but Loeb lost almost 20 minutes. Three-time winner Carlos Sainz
finished two minutes behind Al-Attiyah on the stage, and Peterhansel,
who led the early going, was third. Both complained about how badly the rough track impacted their bodies, especially their necks. Sainz said, “We hope we can carry on and get to the end.” Peterhansel said, “It was one of the hardest stages in my life.”
Sand, sand and more sand in the second loop around Ha'il, the Saudi capital of off-road racing. A field of small dunes with camel grass will give way to vast expanses peppered with dunes. Dune-jumping proficiency will spell the difference between gaining and losing minutes in this slalom-type section.
Only
the real experts will master the soft sand without losing time.

The Spanish Master Sainz duning an electric full-power
Even sly desert foxes who have tamed dunes of every kind seldom face sheer mountains of sand like the ones awaiting the field in the first 100 km of this special. Once that is out of the way, the tricky navigation on the sandy tracks leading back to Ha'il will throw the competitors a curveball or two.
A
laser-like focus will be essential to decipher and follow the
instructions in the road book. Category: Bikes - Quads - Cars - Light

Big Victory today for Baja Safari's Guerlain Chicherit!
"The safety of the participants could no longer be guaranteed", Dakar organizers.
2023 Dakar Rally halted during Stage 3
The third stage of the Dakar Rally has been discontinued.
Competitors will be stopped from waypoint three due to deteriorating weather conditions. The third stage in the 2023 Dakar Rally was from Alula to Ha'il a sloppy 670 kilometres for the competitors. However, the stage was plagued by bad weather conditions. In those conditions, it already had to say goodbye to the first American Dakar winner in the motorbikes. Indeed, Ricky Brabec crashed after 274 and had to be taken to hospital.
At 2:25PM local time, the organizers decided that the stage would be called off as the safety of the participants could no longer be guaranteed. As a number of participants (from the motorbikes) have already finished, a calculation will be made of the remaining participants based on the intervals at the first measuring points. The cars and trucks will be stopped at intermediate point three, where the day's results will also be determined.
When the safety choppers can't fly, due to weather, the participants safety cannot be guaranteed.

The road to Al-'Ula never fails to deliver something out of the ordinary. Closed tracks make up the lion's share of the course, so well-honed handling skills will pay handsome dividends. Even competitors who lose time due to a botched navigation of the fiendish boulder fields or for some other reason will get a reward when they feast their eyes on the splendid canyons and the beautiful landscapes near the finish. The stage will be decided on the dunes, with some of the majestic Nabataean temples visible on the horizon.

Playtime is over as the rally truly gets under way with a well-rounded
loop that will play into the hands of well-rounded competitors. Sandy
tracks follow stony sections with a fair bit of gravel. First-timers
will put their dune-surfing abilities to the test in the final stretch.
While not particularly challenging, this stage will provide an early
snapshot of where everyone stands.
