Harley-Davidson 100th at Pomona, California 2003
Our Editor's Experience
Now, just moments away from the 120th of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles!
Seems like only yesterday. Drove my bike from Cabo San Lucas B.C.S., Mexico to Southern California, USA at Pomona Fairplex. Now, looking back after twenty years, so much has changed.
Harley-Davidson was holding their 100 year blow-out in public, at the fairplex, and I was present.
The night I attended, the Scruggs family played. Later that night, The Doors played. Ian Astbury of the Cult was the frontman and Stuart Copeland slammed the skins. Played drums. Ray and Robby were amazing.
Later, I met Ray Manzarek and interviewed him for his Baja Mexico, Jim Morrison-Doors experiences.
Camped out, with my bike, in the public parking lot. Today, one might be arrested for such activity!
So surprised how little information online about the show and the time framing the era of 1903 to 2003 of Harley-Davidson was portrayed. I suppose it's a symptom of not respecting time, or the value of human experience.
One hundred years seemed to frame things well in a simple storyline. Twenty years is harder to describe?
A very short time later, my research and writings surrounded the Ekins brothers Baja experiences.
We framed and described the early sport of Baja racing, at least in motorcycle terms. Because we all know, the dune buggy claims of 'breaking the records' on the Baja runs are just bogus frauds!
Don't get me wrong. The buggy guy was a cool dude, but the push to market products forced a false claim that the cycle records were broken, when the actual run made by the buggy was timed from La Paz to Tijuana, not from Tijuana to La Paz, as all the cycle records were gauged and established by the Ekins brothers, years earlier.
Something to think about in 2023, as SCORE runs the Baja 1000 for the first time from La Paz to Tijuana this November.
