Stage 1 Report: Sanders tightens his grip as Loeb topples Al Attiyah.
The stage 2 special, which was shortened from 286 to 162 kilometers for safety reasons, took the field from Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, to the stage city of Puerto Peñasco, on the shores of the Sea of Cortez.
In the motorbike category, the title holder, Skyler Howes (Husqvarna Factory Racing), and the reigning world champion, Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), both crashed out of the race in the opening kilometers. The GasGas rider Daniel Sanders won the stage and padded his overall lead.
In the car category, Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme) stormed to victory by 2′45″ over Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) and snatched the lead from him by just 3 seconds. Yazeed Al Rajhi (Overdrive Racing) dropped to fifth place after losing his brakes in the special.

Official Announcement Nov. 1, 2022:
From Jose Lange, President of FITAC:
"We Congratulate the ASO and Sonora Rally for their recent announcement.
However, we ask, why did it take until FITAC to announce our news from Southern Baja BEFORE a North American agreement to take place?
According
to their press release. "after years and years of talking, they finally
made a deal", last week. Two and a half weeks after our agreement with
the South American clubs!
We ask the question, because we know the answer.
Someone had to PUSH the French to commit!
That's OK, as long as they don't back out of the deal, we hope their events take place. Because FITAC will be announcing our schedule, right alongside the rally.
Except for one thing. Our car and truck clubs demand way more fun than can be delivered by the starchy French! Our South American teams demand the coastal route along the Red Sea and all the Dunes we can handle.
We look forward to planning and announcing our 'Sonora 500 2023' that will be deserving of another global adventure win, for the clubs of the greater America's."
FITAC, November 1, 2022
Arizonan Mike Leung said,
"this is gonna be one great race!!"
