Baja racing news confirms,

 johnny kaiser is dead

"It was Johnny Kaiser who passed others are posting on instagram."

brn reporter bricoop: "Imagine if the truck were headed the other direction. Additionally, that trailer likely save injuries and probably lives. Failures involved: 1. Chase truck on restricted road 2. Chase truck not listening for race vehicles 3. Riviera truck flying blind Unknown: The use and adherence to rules regarding the Stella. The time from the Chase team noticed the buggy and being clobbered was less than 10 seconds

The initial reports were the Riviera truck was in the dust of a Buggy. Maybe Class 1 is a better term. Open wheel car."

apologist miguel gonzalez: "No way that chase team saw the Riviera truck coming. And no way the Riviera truck can see puny little dim trailer lights so low to the ground and surrounded by dust from the tow vehicle. A lot of things went wrong for this to happen. Perfect storm. Just glad everyone is okay. Trucks and trailers can always be bought."

reporter response, "Unless there was a turn, yea, no way to see it. But they should have heard a TT and class 1 on the gas."

from one of the participants, of whom, sister was mangled and lost her lower leg:

"For the record, Versey was also the guy charging through bushes and staging cones and running over guys tires (literally) to jump several spots in the staging line (Vizcaino) nearly right up to the green flag, like a total a-hole. Sounds like it’s on-brand for this team. Glad no one was hurt in that incident. Gutted for Johnny Kaiser’s family and Rick Paquette’s team. Rest in peace."

On Monday, May 6, Pearlman and Gordon Puke Up Their Guts:

"NORRA is sad to announce the loss of two competitors in separate incidents during the 2024 Mexican 1000. NORRA creates strong bonds through our shared adventures and life’s daily struggles. There are no words to describe the sorrow we feel when we lose a member of our tight-knit community. Brent Yeardon from the number 301 Jeep Cherokee team racing in the Vintage Short Wheelbase 4x4 class passed away from an apparent heart attack in Valle de Trinidad during stage one of the event. He is remembered by his family, friends and teammates Larry Trim, John Koeth and Sarah Koeth. “Brent Yeadon was co-founder of TrailReady brand of products in 1997. He was my friend and business partner for 33 years. He was an outdoorsman and adventurer, and this was his 4th Mexican 1000 riding with me. Brent and I built the popular 1969 SC/Rambler AIR James Garner Tribute car together that we raced three times to Cabo and is now part of the Stardust Collection. Brent was devoted to his faith, family, friends, and employees. He will be greatly missed.” Larry Trim Tragedy struck again during stage five of the event when Johnny Kaiser lost his life due to an accident on the course. Like Brent, Johnny had deep ties to NORRA and the entire off road racing community. Few knew Johnny better than his good friend Kevin Smith. “It’s a tough time …a big void right now. Johnny and I have both been racing off road for 35 years. We grew up together and have been like brothers since we were 8 years old. We were best friends. Johnny and I have been doing NORRA for the last few years except this year. We built a purpose built NORRA Chenowth Class 1 car to resemble the Bob and Robby Gordon cars of the late 80's. We won two NORRA Mexican 1000 races and one NORRA 500 together. We were undefeated in the three starts that we did with our car. Johnny was truly the best navigator. We made a heck of a team during our NORRA races. Johnny raced BMX, Desert 1600 Cars, Mickey Thompson Stadium Super 1600 and USAC Midgets. He was USAC rookie of the year during his midget career.” “Johnny was a master fabricator and a man of perfection. He defined the art of race car fabrication and the way it should be done. Johnny learned from his father who started in the performance jet boat industry. John Sr. was a perfectionist as well. Alpha Marine eventually turned into Alpha Performance Technology where Johnny built custom choppers and off road cars. The famed Alpha Class 1 car was a buggy that literally destroyed Trophy Trucks when people said a buggy couldn’t beat one. The Alpha car is still racing today. Johnny and I were born and raised in Arcadia California. Johnny eventually moved to North Carolina about 10 years ago to be closer to the racing arena with Robby Gordon. Johnny worked on Robby Gordon's Indy car, NASCAR and Trophy Truck program. Johnny was a very huge asset to Robby's success through the years. His wife Melissa was an integral part to his success. I will forever be proud to say Johnny was my best buddy and I enjoyed all the crazy and wild things we did together” said Kevin. We want to thank Larry Trim and Kevin Smith for sharing their thoughts with us at such a tough time. The NORRA Mexican 1000 is referred to as “The Happiest Race On Earth” but certainly not when we lose such precious individuals in their pursuit of racing and adventure. Everyone at NORRA and the entire off road racing community extends their condolences to all the families and friends touched by these tragic losses. The NORRA Family".

In reaction, our Race Editor Bob Yen, comments:

"Whoah..I quit Caltech/NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Image Processing Lab) in disgust way back in summer '88. [Caltech runs JPL under NASA contract. NASA is GARBAGE US Govt, full of arrogance & CORRUPTION. Favoritism & Discrimination..as per Dr Jonas Salk (famed medical researcher, Polio vaccine)]"...

The FIRST thing I did, was head over to Alpha Marine (Johnny's Dads company), who had a side-business w/pre-runners (also owned/ran a Class 8 team). There was Johnny, exclaiming to me: "What's UP..D-U-D-E??" I remember the Class 8 trailing arm TIG welded by Johnny, rather crooked. He was a beginner welder back then Kaiser Sr owned a Class 8 team (main sponsor was Casablanca fan), with Jim Diroff as Team Mgr. Jim was formerly with PPI (Cal Wells Jr owned), before he broke his back..something about a female racer crashing a MTEG truck I remember the Fireworks 250 ('89 ?), where Kaiser Class 8 raced, with Don McCracken (sp? former Class 4 racer). ^^^ We're talking the good ole days, when Rod Hall/Jim Fricker were racing Class 4 [ raced the famed SCORE Riverside World Championships, along the muddy off-camber Thompson Ridge. They got sideways, & were about to get an E-ticket ride ("we bombed out"), whereupon Fricker SCREAMS -- THis is gonna HURT!! ] along with the other OG (original gangster) Class 4 racers. I remember Jim jokingly commenting on Don's wife (petite, super cute!) southern accent "See y'all!" ..pretty funny. Jim mentioned how the Ford front i-beam suspension (motioning with his hands in a rolling gesture) was the hot-ticket for Barstow races. The next pit over was Walker Evans Racing, racing his Class 8. Jim was talking with Randy Anderson, Walker's long-time right-hand man (crew chief). Later, Randy would be Walker's business-partner..who has now taken over (with Walker's retirement) Around '90 (?) I visited Alpha Marine, where Johnny was in charge of things. We were talking about SCORE "He's [ Sal Fish ] a JACK OFF. He pissed off the Mexican ejido farmers" ^^^ I STILL haven't figured this out completely. Anyone? The 2007 San Felipe 250 got CANCELLED, moved to Ensenada. There's a RDC thread talking about the drama -- something about payments to Ejidos NOT being made. Possibly a middle-man embezzled the $$, so maybe not Sal Fish's fault [ The infamous race where Mark Post got "lighted up" by Mexican police on Hwy 1, but kept on driving to finish. He was arrested by cops, then released..after Ed Herbst (Mark's good friend) showed up with $20K cash (?) & bailed him out!! ]."

"OMG WTF Johnny's dad Johnny Sr died in a car accident near Blythe/CA, 2006? I remember seeing Johnny Jr at 2007 SCORE Laughlin, working on a car (Robby's Trophy Truck?), his face reflected recent passing of his Dad...where I renewed my relationship with Kevin Smith & Johnny Kaiser, Jr Kevin made $300 donation to help w/costs, in return for photo/video coverage of his Class 1 team (Johnny Kaiser & Kevin Smith) I have a LOT of video, incl 360x180 VR (Virtual Reality)..monopod mounted for their starts. HD video (1080p) of their starts I have video of Johnny (& wife Melissa) at awards in San Jose Del Cabo, talking with Roger Mears (whose son Casey raced). Roger/I chatted a bit at the Loreto start I was JUST thinking that I needed to get back to Kevin, to show them the Media I had shot of them -- photos/videos. Well, now I will..with heavy heart. I have great video of Johnny beaming w/pride with his win, talking to Roger Mears As soon as I get back, I will get these HD videos uploaded to Vimeo Johnny and I were born and raised in Arcadia California. This is at least the SECOND time, the Smiths have lost a good friend during a race.. Steve Centurioni (buggy racer, Class 10?) had a pre-running accident during Mint 400 ('90 ?), he flipped his buggy. Arm was trapped between frame & ground, he wasn't wearing a fire-suit. Fire engulfed car, awful! There is a marker (known as the "Monument") at the accident site, I believe it's before the (infamous) Rock Garden The Smiths took a full-page ad in Dusty Times, to acknowledge their racing buddy.. Robby Gordon, Kevin Smith, Johnny Kaiser were all the same age, basically grew up & raced together in SCORE & MTEG. They were BFF (Best Friends Forever)."
