Baja's Pacific Coast is bracing for the impacts of Hurricane Polo, currently a Category 4 hurricane, which isn’t expected to make a hit until the weekend, but will bring flooding and mudslides to Baja Mexico still recovering from past storms.
After rapidly strengthening to Category 5 on Tuesday, Polo remained a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph at 9 a.m. Mexico City time on Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to local officials and the Baja Weather Service. Forecasters expect 4 to 6 inches of rain, with isolated totals of up to 8 inches, across coastal Guerrero Negro and Vizcaino through next Thursday, raising the risk of life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
Emergency Medical Supplies Prepped in Mexico Ahead of Hurricane Polo by Mexican officials has staff on site and has mobilized emergency medical supplies, including field medic packs designed to equip first responders with medical essentials for triage care. The packs are being deployed to La Paz to support a search-and-rescue group. Additional packs are expected to be distributed in Baja California Sur to areas of highest exposure need.
“Southern Baja has been preparing for a stronger-than-usual Pacific hurricane season and as part of that preparedness, the state maintains a stock of field medic packs and emergency health kits in Mexico that can be rapidly deployed to communities affected by severe storms,” said Eduardo Mendoza, director of southern Baja's operations in the state. “The contents of these kits reflect lessons learned from past emergencies and have proven valuable during major storms, including Hurricane Otis in 2023,” he said. “We are closely monitoring Hurricane Polo and are prepared to respond quickly as needs become clearer.”
Flooded roads, damaged health facilities and power outages can interrupt medical care and leave patients without essential medications. These disruptions can be particularly dangerous for people managing diabetes, hypertension and asthma, especially in communities where healthcare is already difficult to access.
Ongoing Disaster Preparedness and Pacific Hurricane Response Efforts
Broader hurricane preparedness program pre-positions packs of essential medicines and medical supplies with healthcare providers in storm-prone areas, in Southern Baja. The supplies help providers treat injuries and maintain care for chronic conditions when regular deliveries are disrupted. The organization’s recent responses in Mexico include equipping medical teams after Hurricane Otis in 2023, a Dengue Fever outbreak a few months later, Hurricane John in 2024, and supporting mobile health brigades following severe flooding in 2025.
Hurricane Polo, started as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 165 miles per hour, is causing flooding from heavy rainfall and hazardous ocean conditions along the Baja Mexico coast, at least for the next week, until Wednesday, September 30th.
Polo is projected to approach the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula on Saturday September 26 or Sunday September 27. We will provide additional guidance for the states of Baja California Sur and Baja California later in the week, as needed. Even if the storm does not make direct landfall on touristic services, heavy rain may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Hazardous ocean conditions—intensified by storms—may result in deadly rip currents and rogue waves. Avoid entering the water or walking on beaches during dangerous conditions, heed warnings from local authorities, and monitor official weather updates closely.
Be prepared: Monitor local media for updates, follow directions from local officials, and in case of emergency, call 911. Flights will be cancelled and altered. Check with your airline for updates. Roads will be impacted due to flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. Check road conditions prior to traveling. Be prepared to seek shelter. Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. Government assistance.

Mexicali takes over as host of former SCORE 2027 off-road race
"SCORE International has announced a major shake-up for its 2027 SCORE World Desert Championship: after years of tradition in San Felipe, the event will now take place in Mexicali and be rebranded as the SCORE Baja 250.
The announcement, made under the banner of “A new season. A new chapter”, signals a fresh direction for the legendary competition as it prepares for its 54th season.
SCORE International, will kick off its four-race championship with the 40th edition of the King Shocks Baja 250 in Mexicali, Baja California, Norte.
The Mexicali race is scheduled to run from March 17 to 21, 2027. Organizers have encouraged fans to stay tuned for further details, which will be made available on the official BAJA Racing News website, BajaRacingNews.com
The championship road then leads to Ensenada for the second round: the 59th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500, set for June 2–7.
La Paz, Southern Baja California, known proudly as the “World Capital of Off-Road Racing”, is hosting the TOYO TIRES CABO 1000 2026, this October and November.

Ensenada promises once again to deliver its trademark breathtaking scenery, for the usual, SCORE events.
Rounding out the season’s middle stretch is the third round, the 8th edition of the SCORE Baja 400, slated for September 8–12, 2027. Despite being the newest addition to SCORE’s international roster, its start and finish lines will occur at this coastal fishing town.
The season will end in spectacular fashion with the crown jewel of Baja Norte racing: the SCORE Baja 1000. Celebrating its 60th anniversary from November 14 to 20, 2027, the race will return to its historic peninsula-wide format that has delighted generations of adventurers.
Over the decades, SCORE International has attracted competitors from Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, alongside some of the biggest names in racing, which is why the 2027 season is shaping up to be an unmissable spectacle for off-road fans."
