2009 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 - Race Briefing1) The Competitors Meeting will be held on Thursday 11/19 at 7:00pm in the Cathedral Room of the Riviera Convention Center.

2) All competitors are reminded that off road racing is an inherently dangerous activi ty that can result in serious injury or even
death. YOU MUST BEAR THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY.
3) The roads used for this race course are open to the public. You must expect at all times to encounter oncoming traffic.
Be advised that spectators may engage in malicious activity. When approaching a group of spectators, slow down and be alert.
4) The speed limit on all highway speed zones is 60 mph. This speed limit will be enforced with the IRC tracking device.
Passing on the highway sections must be made on the left-hand side only and within the 60 MPH speed limit. All participants
MUST possess a valid driver license while operating the race vehicle.
5) HIGHWAY SPEED ZONES - The five locations and penalty information bulletin is located on the SCORE website.
6) All competitors must do their part to protect and preserve the Baja ecological environment. Please instruct your team that it
is very important to properly dispose of all solid and liquid waste. Do not litter, start fires, or deviate from the legal course.
7) The race course is marked with orange/white ribbon, yellow reflective tape, pink directional arrows, green wrong ways, and
mile markers every five miles. SCORE cannot guarantee that course markings will be in place on race day. It is the responsibility
of each competitor to race in a controlled manner and be able to slow down to avoid danger spots.
8) Four Wheel Vehicles that are in a position to pass a motorcycle or atv MUST NOT ATTEMPT TO PASS UNTIL THE RIDER
HAS MOVED TO THE SIDE OF THE COURSE. Motorcycles and ATVs must remain aware of approaching traffic and move
over as quickly as possible. Four-Wheel vehicles are ultimately responsible for the safety of passing. USE YOUR HORN!!!
9) SCORE will use 151.625 (Weatherman Relay) for the main race operations radio frequency. Please use this frequency to
report an emergency or ask for help.
10) CHECKPOINTS - You are required to enter all checkpoints in a single file manner and come to a complete stop at the stop
sign. The checkpoint corridor is not considered part of the race course. Entering and exiting all checkpoints must be done in a
safe and prudent manner in order to guarantee the safety of all checkpoint workers. Passing is not permitted 300 feet before a
checkpoint. Pitting is not permitted within 300 feet before and 100 feet after a checkpoint.
11) HIGHWAYS - No pitting on the lanes of the paved highway surface. The highway is considered a restricted area because
use of the highways is subject to permission by the Mexican Federal Highway Police. As a result, transitional race travel on all
highway sections must be done in a safe and prudent manner. Also, pitting is not permitted within 100 feet before or after a
paved highway entrance, exit or crossing.
12) No towing, pushing or pulling of Four Wheel Vehicles within 1 mile of the finish line. However, wristbanded vehicle
occupants are permitted to push a disabled race vehicle across the finish line. No towing, pushing or pulling through a
checkpoint or greater than 1% of the course, which at this race is 6.7 miles.
13) A competitor who is late for his assigned start time will start at the back of the class that is currently starting. The elapsed
time of a late starter begins with his DESIGNATED START TIME, not the late start time.
14) All competitors will have 31 HOURS from their designated start time to complete the race, provided that each checkpoint
is cleared within the scheduled closing time. Checkpoint locations and closing times are as follows:
CHECKPOINT 1 – SANTA CATARINA / MILE 90.0 – SATURDAY @ 1:00AM.
CHECKPOINT 2 – WEST OF BORREGO / MILE 213.2 – SATURDAY @ 8:00AM.
CHECKPOINT 3 – SOUTH OF SAN FELIPE / MILE 309.8 – SATURDAY @ 11:00AM.
CHECKPOINT 4 – WEST OF BORREGO (REPEAT) / MILE 401.9 – SATURDAY @ 1:00PM.
CHECKPOINT 5 – SOUTH OF SAN VICENTE / MILE 535.3 – SATURDAY @ 4:00PM.

15) The race will Start and Finish in front of the Riviera Convention Center on Boulevard Costero.
16) Motorcycle and ATV classes will report to staging at 6:00AM for a 6:30AM start:
One every 30 seconds in the following order: 22, 21 30, 40, 50, 20, 60, 25, 24, SPTMOTO>, SPTMOTO<, SPTATV, 26.
17) There will be a three hour gap between the last ATV starter and the first SCORE TROPHY TRUCK starter.
18) Four Wheel Vehicles will start one every 30 seconds in the following order: TT, 1, 10, SL, 8, PT, 4, 1/2-1600, 5, 6, 7, BC,
5-1600, 7SX, 2, 3, SF, SM, 9, 17, SPTK, SPBG, 11, SPUTV.
19) Four Wheel Vehicles will begin staging at 9:30AM and will start at APPROXIMATELY 10:30AM.
20) FOUR WHEEL CLASS STAGING TIMES - TT(9:30AM), 1(9:40AM), 10(9:50AM), SL(9:55AM), 8(10:00AM),
PT(10:05AM), 4(10:10AM), 1/2-1600(10:15AM), 5(10:20AM), 6(10:25AM), 7(10:30AM), BC(10:35AM), 5-1600(10:40AM),

21) Late Registration will open on Friday morning at 5:30AM in the Red Room at the Riviera Convention Center.
22) A technical protest MUST be filed no later than 30 minutes after the first finisher out of the money in your class.
23) Unofficial Results will be posted at the San Nicolas Hotel Saturday evening at 9:00PM and the Competition Review Board
will meet at 10:00PM. The Awards Presentation will be held Sunday morning at 10:00AM pooliside at the San Nicolas Hotel.

WHAT: 42nd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race

WHERE: Ensenada-Baja California, Mexico (65 miles south of U.S./Mexico Border), The Majestic Peninsula!
WHO: Over 350 entries from 39 U.S. States, and 14 countries, competing in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs
IMPORTANT COURSE NOTES:
TOTAL MILEAGE: 672.85 miles (6 checkpoints plus the finish line). Starts and finishes on Blvd. Costero, adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada. From the start in Ensenada the course will go east to Ojos Negros for almost 40 miles which will be raced in both directions during the race. From Ojos Negros, the course will travel in a clockwise direction. From Ojos Negros, the course turns South to El Alamo and then east up through the Summit and makes a South turn at Cohabuzo Junction and on to the the infamous Laguna Salada, paralleling Mexican Highway 5. Next is San Felipe loop where the course will cover some of the rugged Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 course including the magnificent Matomi Wash.
After the San Felipe loop, which travels in a counterclockwise direction from and back to Borrego, the course will head north and northwest, joining Highway 3 for a short distance to the Mike’s Sky Ranch turnoff. Then the course heads behind Mike’s and around Rancho Las Truchas and Rancho El Coyote and down the challenging Simpson’s hill. From this point the course is very similar to the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 heading north along the Pacific Ocean below San Vicente and past Erendira, back inland up through Santo Tomas then turning northeast just past Uruapan winding its way back to Ojos Negros for the final charge back to Ensenada. In the Erendira area, the course avoids the rocky section along the Pacific, taking instead a high plateau east of that area.
This year’s race course will feature 6 outlying checkpoints where each vehicle is required to quickly stop before continuing on. The checkpoints will be located as follows: Checkpoint No. 1—No. of Santa Catarina (race mile 90.03), No. 2—West of Borrego (rm 213.27), No. 3—South of San Felipe (rm 309.80), No. 4—West of Borrego (rm 401.94), No. 5—San Vicente Vineyards (rm 535.32), No. 6—South of Ojos Negros (rm 631.25).

HISTORY OF START/FINISH: In the 42-year history of the SCORE Baja 1000, this will be the 35th time the race has started in Ensenada and the 20th time it has finished in Ensenada. It has also started three times in Mexicali (1972, 1993, 1994), twice in Tijuana (1967, 1995) and once each in Santo Tomas (1998) and Ojos Negro (1999). The last time this race ended in Ensenada was 2005. [2008, was the last time the Baja 1000 ended in Ensenada. BRN.com Edit]
TIRE STREAK: BFGoodrich Tires, long a staple in desert racing, had an amazing streak of 20 consecutive overall 4-wheel vehicle winners broken in 2006 by Toyo Tires, but won again both in 2007 and 2008.
ENGINE WINNERS: In 4-wheel vehicle competition, Ford motor has produced 13 overall winners and VW motors is second with 12 overall winners, followed Chevy with 10, Porsche with 3, Toyota with 2, and Dodge with 1.
CHASSIS WINNERS: Among 4-wheel vehicles, Ford has produced the chassis for 11 overall winners while Chenowth has produced the chassis for 10 overall winners, followed by Chevy with 6, Toyota, Funco, Raceco, Jimco and Smithbuilt with 2 each and Miller, Hi-Jumper, Dodge, and Meyers Manx with 1 each.
MOTORCYCLE WINNERS: In motorcycle competition, Honda leads with 19 overall victories (including 12 straight), followed by Husqvarna with 11, Kawasaki with 9 and Yamaha with 2.
Tracking Devices: Continuing to help increase safety, verify route and speed, SCORE is again requiring the mandatory use of tracking devices in ALL classes.
BACK FOR MORE: Another testament to how much this race means to the sport of desert racing, 24 of 27 Pro class winners from last year are back in the starting field for this year’s race. HALL JUST KEEPS ON GOING AND GOING: When veteran Rod Hall straps on his racing helmets and take the green flag, he will keep his incredible streak alive of being the only racer who has competed in all 42 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Hall, who will turn 72 on Nov. 22, will be the second driver in vehicles in both Stock Mini and Stock Full. Hall is the all-time winningest racer in this event with 19 class wins.
CONTINUING STREAKERS: Jim O’Neal, an age-group motorcycle rider, has put together teams of riders who have seven class wins in the last five years, including an amazing three in 2006 (Class 40, Class 50 and Class 60). Larry Roeseler has an amazing five straight class wins (four in Class 1 and last year in SCORE Trophy-Truck). Francisco Septien has three straight wins (Class 30) along with Mike Shaffer (Class 17). Recording two class wins each year, with four straight motorcycle class wins is Craig Adams (Class 40, Class 50). With two straight class wins is Chad Hall (Stock Full, Arnoldo Ramirez (Class 1-2/1600), Kendall Norman (Class 22), Robby Bell (Class 22), Brett Helm (Class 40), Francisco Arredondo (Class 21) and Chad Black (Class 20). Arredondo and Black are entered in Class 22 this year.
TIGHT POINTS--CLASS 1 & CLASS 1-2/1600: SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles which started the race within the individual class. After four events, following Robby Gordon’s big lead of 24 points over second place in the SCORE Overall point standings (he also has an even larger 48-point lead in SCORE Trophy-Truck), only 16 points separate the rest of the top 10 in the 2009 SCORE Overall point standings. Second overall is Class 10 point leader Mike Lawrence and the closest class races are the unlimited Class 1, Class 1-2/1600 and Class 22 for open motorcycles. Randy Wilson leads Class 1 by six points over Harley Letner/Martin Christensen and seven over Armin Schwarz/Martin Christensen. Tied for the Class 1-2/600 point lead are Brian Wilson/Sammy Ehrenberg and Justin Smith. In Class 22, the team led by Cameron Corfman leads by just three points over two teams (Colton Udall and Ivan Rameriz) and five points over the team led by Kendall Norman.
TOYOTA AWARDS: The 2009 SCORE Desert Series also involves the hunt for the 24th annual SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards. The prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards are presented to every racer who completes every required mile of every race in the 2009 SCORE Desert Series. A total of 16 drivers are still eligible for Toyota Milestone awards.
SCORE TROPHY-TRUCKS: An extremely talented field of 35 SCORE Trophy-Trucks are entered to date. The marquee SCORE racing division featuring 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks includes the talented field of regulars led by crossover racer-NASCAR Cup team Owner/Driver Robby Gordon.
Eleven of 15 previous season point champions are entered and 57 of 92 SCORE Trophy-Truck race winners are represented as well along with the last four of the previous15 SCORE Trophy-Truck winners in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
The All-Time leader in SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins is Las Vegas’ Tim Herbst in the No. 19 Ford F-150, with 11.
Returning as defending SCORE Trophy-Truck and Overall race champions are Roger Norman, Reno, Nev./Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., in the No. 8 Ford F-150.
CROSSOVERS/CELEBRITY RACERS: Among the crossover/celebrity racers officially entered in this year’s race are (as of 11/15/09): --Robby Gordon, NASCAR Team Owner/Driver, three-time Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 Overall Winner, No. 77 SCORE Trophy-Truck --Cameron Steele, action sports TV announcer, No. 16 SCORE Trophy-Truck --Ivan Stewart, legendary “Ironman” desert racer returns, No. 778 Stock Mini --Armin Schwarz, of Germany who lives in Austria, seven-time World Rally Championship race winner, No. 101, Class 1 --Armin Kremer, of Germany, top German rally racer, No. 104, Class 1 --Andreas Aigner of Austria, the 2008 WRC Production class point champion, No. 104, Class 1 --Jeff Kargola, the “Ox” is a top Moto X rider(Baja Racing News.com NOTE: Please see injury report on Kargola), part of the Metal Mulisha, co-rider on No. 18x, Class 22 --Max Eddy, versatile speedway pavement and Freestyle motocross rider, co-rider on No. 20x, Class 22 --Boris Said, NASCAR and SCCA sportscar racer, No. BC5, Baja Challenge Class --Tara Dakides, top female professional snowboarder, No. BC5, Baja Challenge Class --Bud Brutsman, TV producer who produced feature show the last two years from this race.
BC6 FAMILY: While there are many families with lots of combined class wins, none have more than the Hall family of Reno, Nev., which has a total of 30 class wins. Led by dad Rod Hall’s race-record 19 class wins, his son Chad has seven and oldest son Josh has four. This year, Team Hummer will have Josh Hall in Stock Mini and Chad Hall will drive a different Hummers H3 in Stock Full. Rod Hall is entered as a second driver for both sons.
TWO-TIMERS: This race always has a few ‘bravehearts’ who enter in two classes, hoping for double wins. Among those this year are: Rod Hall (Stock Mini No. 761 and Stock Full No. 860), Jim O’Neal (Class 50 No. 500x and Class 60 No. 600x), Craig Adams (Class 40 No. 400x and Class 50 No. 548x) and Cisco and Pancho Bio (Class 9, No. 903 and SCORE Lite No. 1209).
BAJA CHAMPS-OVERALL: Entered in this year’s event are 18 racers who have combined for 59 overall wins in either the 4-wheel or motorycle divisions. The leaders are: Larry Roeseler, 13, (10 on a motorcycle and two years in a car); Steve Hengeveld with seven including six straight (all on a motorcycle). With five overall wins is Mark McMillin and with three are Robby Gordon, Kendall Norman and Ivan Stewart.
BAJA CHAMPS-BY CLASS: Entered in this year’s event are 92 racers who have combined for an amazing 295 class wins. The leaders in multiple class wins entered this year are: Rod Hall with 19 (first overall), Larry Roeseler with 17 (second overall), Craig Adams with 13 (tied for fourth overall) Steve Hengeveld with 10 each (8th), Eric Solorzano with 9 (tied for ninth), Mark McMillin and Jim O’Neal with 8 each (tied for 12th) and Ted Hunnicutt Jr. and Chad Hall with 7 each (tied for 18th). Sal Fish SCORE IronRiders: (as of 11/15/09) Over two dozen motorcycle riders and three ATV riders will attempt to run the race solo, with no co-riders. If they succeed, they will each receive one of the prestigious Sal Fish SOCRE (sp. SCORE) IronRider awards.
So far, these 32 riders have officially confirmed they will be attempting to ride solo: Class 22—3x Jason Lulis, 5x James Hall, 9x Dunn Voyer, 17x Aaron Lindsey, 21x Francisco Arredondo; Class 21—101x Dan Troy; Class 20—156x Scott Burch; Class 30—309x Ron Wilson, 312x Talya Dodson; Class 50—502x Gary Barr; Sportsman Motorcycle <250cc x="">250cc—255x Craig Campbell, 257x Eric Anderson, 261x Mike Kaplan, 265x Doug McCrady, 266x Shohei Himeno, 267x Bob Gumser, 272x Hideaki Sasski, 275x Tatsushi Asaga, 276x Yvan Perroud, 280x Dan Dooling, 283x Octavio Valle, 297x Ken Kosiorek, 298x Yoram Lavee; and Sportsman ATV—51a Dennis Lemare, 55a Daniel Wehr, 61a Moshe Yosef.
Of note, Arredondo is from Guatemala, Dodson is a female racer from the US, Himeno, Sasski and Asaga are from Japan, Perroud is from France and Lavee and Yosef are from Israel.
FAMILY TIES: Desert racing has always been about family teams and this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja1000 is a prime example of that fact. This year’s starting grid currently includes 49 brothers racing together and 12 racing separately. The race also has 28 fathers racing with their 32 sons and 9 fathers whose 11 sons are racing in separate vehicles.
THIRD GENERATION:
Among the third generation racers are Andy McMillin (SCORE Trophy-Truck), Daniel McMillin/Luke McMillin (Class 1-2/1600), Harley Letner (Class 1), Brian Wilson (Class 1-2/1600).
BROTHERS TOGETHER:

NASCAR Cup team owner/driver Robby Gordon faces tough competition every Sunday during his 'normal' pavement job, but in his desert racing career he will have to overcome a rugged course and the toughest competition he has ever faced next weekend in his quest to not only win the overall title at the 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, but also the 2009 SCORE Desert Series Overall point championship.
With racers competing in 32 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, the legendary race will be held Nov. 19-22 in Ensenada, Mexico. Completing its 36th year as the World's foremost desert racing sanctioning body, the event is the finale of the five-race 2009 SCORE Desert Series. To date, 338 adventurers and the world's best desert racers have come from 39 U.S. States and 14 countries to gather on the majestic Baja California peninsula.
This year's 672.85-mile race will start for the 35th time and finish for the 20th time in Ensenada. The motorcycle and ATV classes will start their journey at 6:30 a.m. PST (Friday, Nov. 20) with the car and truck classes starting at approximately 10:30 a.m., or three hours after the last ATV leaves the line. Vehicles will leave in 30-second intervals in the elapsed-time race and while the fastest finishers are expected to complete the course in approximately 14 hours. All vehicles will have a 31-hour time limit to become official finishers in the legendary adventure.
In his first season running the entire five-race series since he won the SCORE Trophy-Truck season championship in 1996, Gordon enters this year's granddaddy of all desert races with a comfortable lead in both the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division and the SCORE Overall point race in his No. 77 Team Gordon Chevy CK1500.
While racing part-time in the SCORE desert series, Gordon still has managed nine race wins in the marquee SCORE racing division for 850-horsepower, high-tech, unlimited production trucks.
This year's 672.85-mile loop race will start for the 35th time and finish for the 20th time in Ensenada and Gordon will not only have to contend with the twists and turns, bumps and grinds of the body-pounding course, he will be racing against over 350 cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, including 35 vehicles in SCORE Trophy-Truck.
Not to mention he is also working the logistics for the final NASCAR Cup race of the year next weekend in Homestead, Fla., Gordon will be challenged by a SCORE Trophy-Truck field that, including himself, has 13 racers that have combined to win 57 of 92 races held since the super class was created by SCORE in 1994. The field also includes 11 of the 15 all-time SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champions.
Gordon is certainly no stranger to this race, as he has tried to run it every year while pursuing his pavement racing career, even if he can't run the full SCORE schedule. In fact, in 2006 he had to get back to a NASCAR race and split the driving with budding star Andy McMillin as the pair captured the peninsula run from Ensenada to La Paz.
McMillin, National City, Calif., will be the driver of record this year, with his father Scott McMillin as the other driver, in the No. 31 McMillin Racing Chevy Silverado.
Gordon also won this race in 1989 driving solo to La Paz in Class 8 and teamed for his other overall win in 1990 when he was the third driver in the family team led by his father "Baja" Bob Gordon and second driver Robyn Gordon, one of his sisters.
Having a stellar season this year in the desert, Gordon won both the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and the SCORE Terrible's Primm 300 while finishing second at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 and seventh at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500.
While the only thing that will keep him from winning the coveted SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall point championship this year is if he has a did-not-finish in this race, to know Robby Gordon is to know that this pedal to the metal racer wants to win the race equally as much as he does the season crown.
While certainly keeping his eyes on the road, blocking the course ahead of him in the search for the SCORE Trophy-Truck race win is a list of who's who in desert racing, including one racer who has moved up from the unlimited Class 1 to the super truck class and should be a factor in the outcome as well.
While the unlimited Class 1 is only a 'boulders through' away from capturing the overall in this race, somewhat handicapped by starting behind the behemoth SCORE Trophy-Trucks in the elapsed-time race, SCORE Trophy-Trucks are the clear favorite to win the overall title.
Leading the field of contenders are SCORE Trophy-Truck race winners Tim Herbst, Rob MacCachren, Mark Post, Brian Collins, Curt Le Duc, B.J. Baldwin, Larry Roeseler, Roger Norman, Alan Pflueger, Rick D. Johnson, Andy McMillin and Gus Vildosola.
Terrible Herbst Motorsports, the winningest team in the history of SCORE Trophy-Truck with 11 race wins and four season point titles, returns with Las Vegas brothers Tim and Troy Herbst ready to pilot the new No. 19 Ford F-150. Running just the SCORE Baja races this season, Troy drove the new Smithbuilt race truck to a seventh in class in its first race in San Felipe and a fifth in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500.
Post, Laguna Beach, Calif., and Las Vegas' MacCachren, with seven career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins each, split the driving in Posts' No. 3 Riviera Racing Ford F-150, and together won the historic 40th annual race from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas in 2007.
Roger Norman, Reno, Nev., and Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., are the defending race champions in the No. 8 Norman Motorsports Ford F-150. Last year was the first win for both Norman and Roeseler in SCORE Trophy-Truck in this race. In race history, Norman has three class wins while Roeseler has 17, including 13 overall wins (10 of which were on motorcycles).
Las Vegas' Brian Collins, who will split driving with veteran Chuck Hovey, Escondido, Calif., has six career SCORE Trophy-Trucks wins including winning this year's Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 for the second straight year in the No. 12 Collins Motorsports Dodge Ram1500.
The 1997 SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champ, Curt LeDuc, Cherry Valley, Calif., has four career race wins in this class and will split driving this year with driver of record Nick Vanderwey, Phoenix, in the No. 84 Chevy Sivlerado.
Winning both the 2006 and the 2008 SCORE Trophy-Truck season point crowns, Las Vegas' B.J. Baldwin has three career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins and was second in this race a year ago in the No. 1 Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado.
With two career race wins in the class, Hawaii's Alan Pflueger will be another contender in the No. 28 Pflueger Motorsports Chevy Silverado.
Rick D. Johnson, Barstow, Calif., won this class in this year's Tecate SCORE Baja 500 as he consistently runs among the leaders in the No. 71 Ford F-150. He also drew the second starting position in this year's race.
With a huge fan base and consummate knowledge of the course, the other driver with one career race win in SCORE Trophy-Truck entered is Mexico's Gus Vildosola, who will be the second driver for his son Gus Vildosola Jr. in the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150. Together, they finished second to Post/MacCachren in the epic 2007 race to Cabo.
Because it is a race of the mind as well as the competition, there can always be surprise winners in SCORE Baja races.
Just patiently plugging along in desert racing's marquee division, Arizona's journeyman driver Pete Sohren received the first starting position during the Oct. 10 computerized drawing for the race. The grizzled veteran Sohren will pilot his No. 2 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck.
Sohren finished fourth in June's race, tying his best career SCORE Trophy-Truck race finish.
Other entries among the veterans in the talented 35-truck field in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division include Robbie Pierce/Mike Julson, Santee, Calif. (30-Chevy Silverado), Cameron Steele, San Clemente, Calif./Rick Geiser, Phoenix (GMC Sierra), Mark McMillin, El Cajon, Calif. (23-Ford F-150), Ron Whitton, Mesa, Ariz. Mark McMillin, the older brother of Scott and uncle of Andy, is making his debut in this race in SCORE Trophy-Truck in the No. 23 McMillin Racing Ford F-150, but he is no stranger to the checkered flag in SCORE Baja races. Mark McMillin has eight career class wins in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, including five overall victories.
Drawing first start in the unlimited Class 1 is former German World Rally Championship driver Armin Schwarz and his second driver, Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif., in the All-German Motorsports Jimco-BMW
Chuck Dempsey, Oak Hills, Calif., is the defending Class 1 race winner and Randy Wilson, Long Beach, Calif., is currently leading the points in the class for unlimited open-wheel desert race cars.
Harley Letner, a third-generation desert racer, and his cousin Kory Halopoff, were second in Class 1 in this race last year and the pair were the overall winners of this year's Tecate SCORE Baja 500.
The unique Terrible Herbst Motorsports Class 1 'Landshark' has six class wins and two overall titles in this race with Troy Herbst as the primary driver. In this year's first two SCORE Baja races, Tim Herbst has driven the Smithbuilt legend solo to a second place and an 11th in Class 1.
While late entries are accepted up to race day, a total of 338 entries have officially been accepted for the race as of today which will put the starting field in the top 10 in the 42-year history of the storied event.
The car and truck classes with the most entries to date are SCORE Trophy-Truck (35), Class 1 (24), Class 1-2/1600 and SCORE Lite (15 each) and Class 10 (10).
Among the motorcycle and ATV classes, the open motorcycle Class 22 has the most entries to date with 19 followed by Class 30, riders 30 years old and over, which has 14.
Leading the six Sportsman classes in the race is Sportsman Motorcycle over 250cc which has 36 entries and Sportsman Motorcycle under 250cc which has 15 entries to date.
With massive crowds reaching nearly 250,000 anticipated to again be spread out along the rugged course that travels from Ensenada to Ojos Negros, east down Laguna Salada to San Felipe, down through the legendary Matomi Wash, around Mike's Sky Ranch, through both Rancho Las Truchas and Rancho El Coyote, down the infamous Simpson's Hill and back to the Pacific Coast below San Vicente and up through Santo Tomas, Uruapan and back to Ojos Negros, covering much of the northern half of the majestic Baja California peninsula to and from Ensenada.

From Ampudia to Wilson, desert racing is all about family ties and among the nearly 350 entries for next week’s 42nd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 are over 30 entries with multiple-family members competing in the granddaddy of all desert races.
With racers competing in 29 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, the legendary race will be held Nov. 19-22 in Ensenada, Mexico. Completing its 36th year as the World’s foremost desert racing sanctioning body, the event is the finale of the five-race 2009 SCORE Desert Series. To date, adventurers and the world’s best desert racers have come from 39 U.S. States and 14 countries to gather on the majestic Baja California peninsula.
While many entries have family members on support crews that can swell to as high as 50 people and some entries now have third-generation desert racers, the Ampudia, Bio, Baldwin, Hall, Herbst, McMillin, Vildosola and Wilson families are among the prominent SCORE Baja racers that have multiple family members competing either in the same vehicle or in separate vehicles this year in the world’s most challenging desert race.
“There is no sport in the world that attracts more family participants than desert racing,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after SCORE International started in 1973. “SCORE is both humbled and honored to have so many of the greatest racing families in the world competing with us in the most incredible desert race in the world. To think with everything going on in the world today that we have nearly 350 entries heading to Ensenada is a true testament to the preeminent position this race holds in the motorsports world.”
It’s the oldest and most well known of all desert races, and it remains as the single most appealing accomplishment to a driver. Since 1967, the Granddaddy of all desert races has been run over the mysterious Baja California peninsula. Because of the economics and logistics involved, some years it is a peninsula run while most years it is a loop race, starting and finishing in Ensenada.
This year’s 672.85-mile race will start for the 35th time and finish for the 20th time in Ensenada. The motorcycle and ATV classes will start their journey at 6:30 a.m. (PST, Friday, Nov. 20) with the car and truck classes starting at approximately 10:30 a.m., or three hours after the last ATV leaves the line. Vehicles will leave in 30-second intervals in the elapsed-time race and while the fastest finishers are expected to complete the course in approximately 14 hours. All vehicles will have a 31-hour time limit to become official finishers in the legendary adventure.
Rodrigo Ampudia Jr., of Ensenada, splits driving in Class 8 with his father Rodrigo Sr. while Cisco Bio and his father Pancho Bio, of El Cajon, Calif., will share the driving in two classes—Cisco as driver of record in SCORE Lite and Pancho as DOR in Class 9.
B.J. Baldwin and his father Bobby Baldwin, of Las Vegas, drive separate Chevy Silverado trucks in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Rod Hall will drive in two classes, one with each of his sons.
The venerable Hall, Reno, Nev., is only individual who has raced in all 41 previous Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 races.
The legendary Hall has a race-record 19 career class wins in this event and is the only driver to have competed every year (all in a car or truck class). Hall, who will turn 72 on Nov. 22, will be looking for two class wins this year as he is entered as the second driver for his sons Josh and Chad Hall in Hummer H3 vehicles in both the Stock Mini and Stock Full classes.
The three-generation McMillin Racing family, who all live in the San Diego area, continue to follow in the racetracks of family patriarch Corky McMillin, who raced until shortly before he passed away at 76 in 2006.
Corky’s sons Mark and Scott will both drive in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division. Mark will share driving with longtime team member Brian Ewalt while Scott will be the second driver for his son Andy, who won the 2006 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 driving with Robby Gordon.
Mark’s sons Daniel and Luke McMillin will share the driving in a Class 1-2/1600 entry.
McMillin Racing has 12 class wins in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, led by Mark McMillin’s eight class wins which includes five overall titles.
Another prominent Mexican race team, Gus Vildosola Jr. and Gus Vildosola Sr., share the driving in a Ford F-150 in the SCORE Trophy-Truck division.
Wilson Motorsports of Long Beach, Calif., is another of the prominent multi-generational SCORE Baja race teams. In this year’s race, Randy Wilson and his brother Ronny will team up in Class 1 where Randy is the current class point leader heading into the season finale. In Class 1-2/1600, cousins Brian Wilson and Brad Wilson will share driving with Las Vegas’ Sammy Ehrenberg. Brian Wilson enters the race currently tied for the Class 1-2/1600 point lead.
The only husband/wife combination entered as drivers of record this year are Cameron Steele and Heidi Steele of San Clemente, Calif. Cameron Steele races in SCORE Trophy-Truck while Heidi Steele is the Class 6 point leader in her Ford Ranger.
Both racing in motorcycle classes, leading the brother and sister racers entered this year are Quinn Cody and Anna Cody. Quinn Cody, Los Olivos, Calif., is a team rider for Johnny Campbell Racing in the open Class 22 while Anna Cody, Simi Valley, Calif., is the rider of record for a strong team in Class 20.
Among the other father/son teams competing together are Las Vegas’ Rudy and Carlos Cortez (Class 1), Stuart Chase, Burbank, Calif. and Eric Chase, San Diego (Class 1), Mexico’s Carlos and Gerardo Iribe (Class 1-2/1600), Mark and Shea McIntyre, Oakland, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600), Dan and Thomas Chamlee, Carpenteria, Calif. (Class 7), Lee and Lee Banning Jr. (SCORE Lite), Luis and Luis Barragan Jr., Mexicali, Mexico (SCORE Lite), Brian and Cody Parkhouse, Long Beach, Calif. (SCORE Lite) along with Ron and Jeremy Purvines, Henderson, Nev. (Class 21).
John Langley, the Producer of the popular COPS Television show, has two family vehicles entered in the SCORE Lite class. He is driver of record in one vehicle with his son Zak as a co-driver and his other son Morgan is driver of record in the second vehicle.
This year’s race also features two sets of twin brothers racing together. Arturo and Able Velazco, Banning, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600) and Matt and Max Eddy, Barstow., Calif. (Class 22) are the two sets of twins.
Leading the brothers racing separately are England’s Darren and Gavin Skilton. Darren Skilton races in Class 3 while Gavin Skilton competes in the Stock Mini class. The brothers each won their respective classes in this race last year.
Among the other brothers racing together are: Phoenix’s Nick, Larry and Mike Vanderwey (SCORE Trophy-Truck), Eric and Hiram Duran, Tecate, Calif. Pre-race festivities on Thursday, Nov. 19, for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, including the vastly popular tech and contingency of all vehicles and the SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Boulevard Costero in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. The pre-race mandatory driver/rider briefing will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral Room at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. Racer and media registration will be held at the San Nicolas Resort Hotel from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18 and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19.
The post-race Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 Survivor’s Celebration will be held poolside at the San Nicolas Resort Hotel at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22.
This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour NBC Sports special, in association with SCORE and Aura360, for the sixth consecutive year. It is scheduled to air on NBC at 2 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Dec. 19 on the NBC Television Network. It will also air on a delayed basis outside of the U.S. on ESPN International.

“We have been able, with the dedication and cooperation of many of our friends in Baja California, to develop a race course for the 42nd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 that will challenge even the most experienced of our great SCORE desert racers,” commented Sal Fish, SCORE President/CEO since soon after it was founded in 1973. “This great, great course presents the competitors with all of the variety of terrain and elevation changes you could possibly hope for along with the dramatic beauty of Baja. This spectacular race course features the best of the courses we have used in our last three SCORE Baja races.”
With massive crowds reaching nearly 250,000 anticipated to again be spread out along the rugged course that travels from Ensenada, down Laguna Salada to San Felipe, down through the legendary Matomi Wash, around Mike’s Sky Ranch, through both Rancho El Trachis and Rancho El Coyote, down the infamous Simpson’s Hill and back to the Pacific Coast below San Vicente and up through Santo Tomas, Uruapan and back to Ojos Negros, covering much of the northern half of the majestic Baja California peninsula to and from Ensenada.

After the San Felipe loop, which travels in a counterclockwise direction from and back to Borrego, the course will head north and northwest, joining Highway 3 for a short distance to the Mike’s Sky Ranch turnoff. Then the course heads behind Mike’s and around Rancho Trachis and Rancho Coyote and down the challenging Simpson’s hill. From this point the course is very similar to the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 heading north along the Pacific Ocean below San Vicente and past Erendira, back inland up through Santo Tomas then turning northeast just past Uruapan winding its way back to Ojos Negros for the final charge back to Ensenada. In the Erendira area, the course avoids the rocky section along the Pacific, taking instead a high plateau east of that area.
The course features six checkpoints, where vehicle numbers and passing times are recorded to help verify the information gathered on the electronic recording devices that are mounted on all vehicles in the race.
The locations of the six checkpoints are: Checkpoint 1 (race-mile 90.03, North of Santa Catarina), CP2 (rm213.27-southwest of Borrego), CP3 (rm309.80-South of San Felipe), CP4 (rm401.94-Southwest of Borrego), CP5 (rm 535.32-San Vicente Vineyards) and CP6 (rm631.25-Ojos Negros ).
Pre-race festivities on Thursday, Nov. 19, for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, including the vastly popular tech and contingency of all vehicles and the SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway will be held from 19 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Boulevard Costero in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. The pre-race mandatory driver/rider briefing will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral Room at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. Racer and media registration will be held at the San Nicolas Resort Hotel from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18 and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19.
While entries will be accepted up to race morning (Friday, Nov. 20), late entries will be assigned the next available number and starting position within each class.
The post-race Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 Survivor’s Celebration will be held poolside at the San Nicolas Resort Hotel at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22.
The car and truck classes with the most entries to date are SCORE Trophy-Truck (34), Class 1 (23), Class 1-2/1600 (13) and Class 10 and SCORE Lite (10 each).
Among the motorcycle and ATV classes, the open motorcycle Class 22 has the most entries to date with 18 followed by Class 30, riders 30 years old and over, which has 13.
Leading the six Sportsman classes in the race is Sportsman Motorcycle over 250cc which has 35 entries and Sportsman Motorcycle under 250cc which has 14 entries to date.
The defending overall champions are all in this year’s field: Roger Norman, Reno, Nev./Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., in the No. 8 Norman Motorsports BFGoodrich Tires Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck, the No. 1x Class 22 open motorcycle team led by Robby Bell, Sun City, Calif., on a Kawasaki KX450 and the No. 1a Class 24 open ATV team led by Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif., on a Honda TRX700XX.
Among the many other talented entries from all over the world is the venerable Rod Hall, Reno , Nev.

This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour NBC Sports special, in association with SCORE and Aura360, for the sixth consecutive year. It is scheduled to air on NBC at 2 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Dec. 19 on the NBC Television Network. It will also air on a delayed basis outside of the U.S.
In addition to season point class point championships, drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also racing to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 24th consecutive year, a total of 16 drivers remain eligible after Round 4 of the 2009 SCORE Desert
This race also features the prestigious Sal Fish SCORE IronRider awards presented to each motorcycle or ATV rider who completes the course within the time limit while riding solo. To date, 24 individuals have officially declared that they will be attempting to complete the course riding solo.
