Hotels in Ensenada Raised Room Rates Just For Us Racers!

Executive Summary:

 The hotels are crap and they will continue to Jack prices for us racers! And, SCORE is about to work with "us" (Baja California) on another race.

 "Secretary of Tourism in Baja California, Juan Reds Funcke, confirmed that there is a surge in hotel occupancy in the entity that issues the Baja500, Baja1000 and San Felipe 250 will not change of venue.

In an interview, the state official said that in the city of Tijuana in what was January to May of hotel occupancy was 50 percent, in a sample of 19 hotels.

In the same period, but this year we had a record of 58 percent occupancy, reflecting a significant increase also is starting a good June with an occupancy rate of 64 percent, he added.

If increases in rates in hotels in the city of Ensenada, which was recorded in the period in which they developed the Baja 500, the state official issued a call for sites that did the debase to be more competitive.

"One of my 40 Class teammates Mike Baxter from Carson city NV was pre running the start from Ensenada on thurs aprox 10:00 am when at about RM10 is came across and "Downed rider" Or so he though with his bike laying in the middle of the course and the hunched over clutching his stomach. As he pulled up he asked the guy if he was ok and the guy muttered something in Spanish like he was in pain. So he asked again and this time he pulled up a Black .45 handgun and pointed it 10 inches from his face and said "Give me your bike right now or ill shoot you". As Mike was literally about to take this POS gun out of his hands and beat the life out of him another guy jumped from the bushes on his left and then another from behind. Sadly he had to give up his 450X. Before I forget I want to truly thank Kyle Abney because he not only stopped and rode Mike out or harms way but he drove mike to two different Police stations and stayed with his for over 4Hrs of Hell.. Without going into all the other details and how we figured this out let me say that the police have been Outstanding since minute one taking this very very serious. They found out that this guy not only races SCORE races but was entered in what we understood was team 5X. They call Him "Freddy" and he was the suspect in the robbery of as I understand it a Canadian rider at last years 500.. As of right ow they said that the police know everything about this POS including his home and his mothers home and as far as the police say he is on the run. He was positively identified by Mike in some arrest photos they had of the guy. He rides a Honda 450X with "Monster stickers" on the graphics. He also has a black helmet of some kind. That is all the info I have as of right now. We of course took this info straight to Oscar the Attorney for SCORE and we were blown off like we were a second class citizen. We sent off emails with No response and finally after a few more phone calls we had to go down the the convention center and practically Corner Roger Norman. So after a lengthy discussion Mike was basically told to Pack sand and there was NOTHING that they could do about it and or would do about it and "thanks for coming" but don't let the door hit you in the ass. So I just wanted to let everyone know that this kind of thing is serious and we are really hoping they find this POS and we find the bike. "

"Rest in peace. 
He ran the low 500 2013 yesterday reached A Pits his team saw it came very pale to get very thirsty and told him that it seemed to be a heat stroke which had to abandon the race and replied: "I will arrive to the finish line let me run" forward some fans saw him along the path and stopped to help him with water Mojandolo and dale to take and he said to them "I wanted to continue" and I moved in the second Pits his team returned to give water and your bike team told him that he had to stop running because it looked very bad, too tired! And he replied: "CORRERE death" more forward was his motorcycle pulled and a few meters the was already lying lifeless, apparently of a heart attack. His close friends say that he already knew that was going to die, had problems of the heart, and he wanted to die doing what more he liked and wanted to die in ssa BAJA 500."

"This one hit our team pretty hard as a call came through saying our rider (66a) was laying face down on the bottom of the summit. I was so relieved to find our guy alive and well, relaxing in the shade. When we got to Salada our chase was visibly shook up as our truck was parked near a big name team who got involved. Sad for sure but feel as if that is how he wanted to go." And, "So thats what all the 15X chatter on the race radio relay was about. Figured something was going down when Bob was calling them to go SAT or Race Freq. Sad news! RIP"

His team split and took off. His motorcycle was also taken, not known whether stolen or taken by his teamates when they left him to die or dead on the distant desolate desert race course. 
More information supplied to BRN.com, as soon as the police were known on the way to the scene of the death, anyone who knew the victim, did not stay on site.
Sources close to the situation say the bike (15x) will be easy to identify.

Spectator Killed In BAJA 500

A viewer of the Baja 500 that is not identified died this day after being hit and killed by one of the cars of race cars in the BAJA 500 yesterday.
Besides the adult injured an 8-year-old relative of the deceased was not.
The crash site is out of the Colonia Popular 89, where shortly before a dangerous curve where the accident occurred, the retaining wall had been moved by one of the cars.
Also others had skidded, despite which, keep spectators away from protected areas invaded the area crossed by the race cars which led to the tragedy.
The race car driver named Kevin Price (1610), from San Jose California, was arrested while they undertake the necessary inquiries.

They are dumb enough to believe a guy that posts on a local newspaper saying "gringos" come to our land to take advantage of it and screw everything from nature to our facilities "because they are not allowed to do that on their side of the border"."

Toyo Tires captured a historic 1st and 2nd overall in the 45th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 this past weekend.

Robby Gordon of Charlotte, NC, driving his SPEED Energy / Toyo Tires Chevy CK1500 trophy truck, won the 501-mile race in a time of 10:04:36. Finishing second was BJ Baldwin of Las Vegas, NV, piloting his Monster Energy / Toyo Tires Chevy Silverado trophy truck in a time of 10:13:51. Both drivers relied on Toyo Open Country M/T-R tires for their decisive podium finish over a field of some 275 international competitors.

For the first time, pre-race qualifying was held a few days earlier on a section of the Baja 500 race course near Ojos Negros. Robby Gordon qualified the fastest, ensuring a number one starting position. During the race, Gordon was the first trophy truck on course and was challenged by surprise obstacles throughout the loop around the Baja California peninsula. An early spin off-course nearly changed the outcome of his race, but a determined Gordon managed to return to the lead position.

“I can’t say enough about the Toyo tires and the race this weekend,” said Gordon. “To be able to win the race overall and have BJ finish second, and then on the other side, our other car Justin Matney of RPM Offroad. We got the Overall, Trophy Truck, Class 1, Spec 8, Class 8… all on Toyo Tires. It was a killer weekend. I want to thank everyone from Toyo for taking a chance on the RPM team, and stepping up and letting them join the family. We’re stoked to have another good winning partner on our hands with them… it was just a great weekend.”

“This year’s Baja 500 was so close to being a flawless victory. A bolt that held the brake pedal assembly together broke forcing us to lose valuable time limping it into the pits,” said Baldwin. “We were easily and consistently leading the race for five hours up until then. Other than that we had no issues. My Toyo's performed perfectly. We had great traction and no tire failures during the entire Baja 500.”

Toyo Open Country M/T tires were also on the winning vehicles of the SPEED Energy / RPM Offroad racing team. The Clyde Stacy-owned vehicles were prepped at Robby Gordon Off-Road and with the help of Geiser Brothers. Justin Matney of Bristol, TN, driver of the SPEED Energy / RPM Offroad buggy won decisively in Class 1 with a time of 11:16:25. Also winning the Trophy Truck Special Class was the Toyo Tires-equipped Chevy truck driven by Apdaly Lopez with a time of 13:34:40.

In Class 8, Derek Fletcher from Arlington, VA, won on Toyo tires with a time of 17:52:28 driving his Chevy truck.

"We really just cruised all day, no issues and zero flats. It is a real testament to Toyo Tires,” said Justin Matney of RPM Offroad. “Our biggest problem today was the dust. It was really dusty out there, but I am happy to be here, first with SPEED Energy, RPM and Toyo Tires. I can't thank those guys enough. I’m really looking forward to the 1000 and to see if we can't capitalize there as well."

Last year, Gordon was named 2012 Grand Champion in the Best In The Desert Series.

ROBBY GORDON, No. 77 (First in class and first overall four-wheel vehicle. Gordon drove the entire race.) — B.J. (Baldwin) ran good all day. We struggled the last little bit. I don’t know if I’ve got a right rear flat tire or what’s going on but I struggled really badly the last five or 10 miles. I don’t know what happened in the wash here but I went over the big jump this morning going about 115 miles an hour, landed in a puddle and it spun me around 360 (degrees) about two times. I don’t know what happened between last night and this morning but the whole riverbed was flooded. It’s a bummer because we’ve got all the sponsors on the cars, we get it looking really good and we ruin it in the first 30 seconds of the race. I spun out and spent a bunch of times backwards. (Jason) Voss went by me and Bryce (Menzies) got close to going by me but we stayed out in front of him. It was a good day though. It was a good day for us. You can’t do it without a good race truck and the guys working back at the shop did a wonderful job. We stayed on the course the whole day. We didn’t have a helicopter but it was a good day. The pit stops were awesome. On the last stop we pulled out right in front of B.J. and that’s exactly what we needed to do. We needed to be the first truck on the road for the last 150 miles. We put the whip to her and let her run.
B.J. BALDWIN, No. 1 (Second in class and second overall four-wheel vehicle. Baldwin drove the entire race.) — We had Robby (Gordon) covered which is a great feeling. I have regular race mode where I drive the truck accordingly and it’s a very fast pace. Then I have kill mode where I take exceptional risk. I can make a lot of time for a short period of time. I can do it eight to 10 times throughout the day. I didn’t have to do that one time today. We had a great strategy when it came to driving the truck. I had Robby covered by 1:15 corrected, so everything I wanted to do in this race I did. Qualifying fourth or fifth was a plan. I knew that some of the faster guys were going to try and qualify first, but I don’t think that is an advantage here because it is such a long day. I had a really good strategy and I executed it with perfection but we had a $2 dollar bolt break in the brake pedal that caused the brakes to fail, but we are here. The Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 is going to be a very rough race. We are going to have to set the truck up to go through the big bumps at high speed. It’s not a fast-paced race like the La Paz run. This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 is going to be very rough and the average speed lower.
BRYCE MENZIES, No. 70 (Third in class and third overall four-wheel vehicle. Menzies drove the entire race.) — We were first on the road at Borrego but we had something go wrong with the power steering and it took us a little bit to get out of the truck and change it ourselves. We came out in eighth place and then we had to pick our way through the people and the dust. The course was unbelievably tough. It was silty, rocky and everything you can imagine. It’s so dusty you can’t pass unless somebody has a problem. Once we got some open air we made up some time. We were making up time but just not enough. It wasn’t our day. We won this race two years in a row and it would have been cool to get a three-peat and it was looking good for a while but everything went wrong.
TIM HERBST, No. 19 (Fourth in class and fourth overall four-wheel vehicle. Herbst shared driving duties with Larry Roeseler.) — We ran pretty well today. Larry Roeseler started out and did a great job and got me the truck in third. Along the beach I got a flat tire and Bryce Menzies got around us and after that we just followed everybody in unfortunately. I think we glazed our brakes somewhere on the course and I couldn’t use a lot of braking going downhill. It was tough to slow the vehicle down and that just wore me out. When running straight or running up a little bit of an incline, the brakes didn’t bother me. We love Mexico and we’ll be here next year and in years to come. After we are a little old I’ve got some young kids that want to do this. They are kicking at the heels of me right now, wanting me to get out of the truck so they can take it for a drive. CO-DRIVER LARRY ROESELER said: We had one flat tire but the truck ran great and that’s all we can ask for. Everybody here wants to win so we do our best. It’s all we can do.
GARY WEYHRICH, No. 98 (Fifth in class and fifth overall four-wheel vehicle. Weyhrich drove the entire race.) — We had a good pace going and at about mile 230 we were in the hunt for the lead. We got over to Mike’s Sky Ranch and got a flat. That’s a great road so I’m not sure what I hit with the tire. Right beyond there we got high-centered. Thank goodness there was somebody there to pull us out and then we got another flat, so that section took us forever. It put us behind some trucks that we had to catch and get back around. That took forever because there was no wind on the course. This truck is thrashed so the boys will be busy back in the shop.
STEVEN EUGENIO, No. 7 (Sixth in class and sixth overall four-wheel vehicle. Eugenio shared driving duties with Adam Pfankuch.) — We got the truck straight out of the shop on Wednesday, went and tested it and brought it straight here. We had 20 minutes of down time early in the day and we got stuck behind the train and it was follow the leader. This truck was flawless the whole time. Everyone had a good time out here and did what they needed to do. Now we need a little bit of luck for the next one and maybe we can be up front.
ROB MacCACHREN, No. 11 (Seventh in class and seventh overall four-wheel vehicle. MacCachren drove the entire race.) — We had some vapor lock issues from Laguna Salada to the finish. I’ve been monitoring fuel pressure and it has been dipping and I could really only go about 90 miles per hour from race mile 180 all the way in. When we crossed Borrego Road the thing shut off completely so we had to wait for somebody to bring more gas. We just babied it to the finish and we are here. It was a great race course and I want to thank everyone at SCORE for doing such a great job on the course. It’s great being down here and I love all of the fans here in Ensenada.
JUAN C. LOPEZ, No. 18 (Eighth in class and eighth overall four-wheel vehicle. Lopez drove the entire race.) — It was a tough race and everything was going well until we tried to get past (Bryce) Menzies and we had the first of four flats. We drove with a flat for about two miles because our jack failed.
JUSTIN DAVIS, No. 85 (Ninth in class and ninth overall four-wheel vehicle. Davis drove the entire race.) — It was going pretty smoothly and at Borrego we were right there with corrected time and then I hit a big rock and got a flat. We were still in the top five and got it going again. Everything was running smooth and Weyhrich, after El Coyote, log jammed the course right in front of me so I had to pull him out. In Colonet the alternator decided to die so we changed that. We were down for 20 minutes. For as much down time as we had, we had a pretty good day. It was a rough day but we pushed through it.
TROY HERBST, No. 91 (Tenth in class. Herbst shared driving duties with Ryan Arciero.) — CO-DRIVER RYAN ARCIERO said: It was a really long day today. Troy did a fantastic job. It was a mistake I made leaving Mike’s Sky Ranch that cost us. It was a hard 180 right and we were going slow following (Nick) Vanderwey in his dust and we couldn’t make the corner and ended up getting stuck. I owe a debt of gratitude to Rob MacCachren. When he came up next to us we had the tow rope out and he pulled us out. The team never gave up. Roger (Norman) laid out a pretty tough course today. We are just happy to be here at the finish line. We ended up getting a couple flats that were completely my fault.
CLASS 1
JUSTIN MATNEY, No. 101 (First in class and tenth overall four-wheel vehicle. Matney drove the entire race.) – We had no flats and no issues until the motor started missing around Borrego. When we pulled in here it completely died. We started fifth and the plan was to just chill out and  basically pre-run to Colonet. From there we just poured it on and just held position. The dust today was just miserable. We got stuck behind a couple of SCORE Trophy Trucks from the start to the lake bed and we couldn’t do anything to get around them.
COREY KEYSAR, No. 120 (Second in class. Keysar drove the entire race.) — We hit some really good puddles in the wash going out and we got the motor a little wet but it ended up drying out. We had one mechanical issue with a clamp that came off and let all of the water out of the motor. We took our Camelbacks and put enough in there to keep it cool and then begged for some more water from another guy that had a truck out there. Other than that, we had a pretty good time but we had two flats. We lost quite a bit of time with the coolant leak. I think we were leading for about half the race.
CODY PARKHOUSE, No. 100 (Third in class. Parkhouse drove the entire race.) — We got stuck in some sand somewhere between Ojos Negros and Cero Colorado. We lost about 20 minutes there. If that hadn’t happened I think it would have worked out perfectly, just the way we wanted. We had to make up a lot of time throughout the day.
RONNY WILSON, No. 153 (Fourth in class. Wilson shared driving duties with Brian Wilson) — We had a good day. My nephew Brian started and gave me the car in third at San Matais. We lost a serpentine belt on the beach and we were down about seven minutes or so fixing that. I was pretty much done after I got to Ojos Negros. I’m tired and sore and have been sick all week. It’s just a mess coming in and the course is really rough.
HIRAM DURAN, No. 170 (Fifth in class. Duran shared driving duties with Salvador Castro) — CO-DRIVER SALVADOR CASTRO said: We had a lot of dust and silt. It was a great course with no problems except for some water crossings.
CLASS 1/2-1600
ERNESTO ARAMBULA, No. 1602 (Arambula shared driving duties with Edmundo Fernandez) –  CO-DRIVER EDMUNDO FERNANDEZ said: The hardest part of the race was Mike’s Sky Ranch road where there were a number of stalled vehicles and it made it difficult to get through.
JOSE ROBLES, No. 1601 (Robles shared driving duties with Guillermo Luna) — The car ran perfectly except for a problem with the front torsion bars and the brakes failed 25 miles from the finish.
CLASS 10
MIKE JOHNSON, No. 1031 (First in Class 10)  We didn’t get a single flat, we changed one set of tires, fueled twice and here we are. It was a brutal course. I’ve got to commend Roger (Norman) for laying that one out. That was a lot of fun and had every element in the world in it. All the sections were different but they were all equally as challenging. From the beginning there was dust to deal with, then a summit to deal with and then you got in the sand. You had all of the whups going into Borrego and then up Mike’s Sky Ranch road it got treacherous. As soon as you got onto the Pacific side there was another section of silt, sand and rocks.
BRAD WILSON, No. 1053 (Wilson shared driving duties with Kyle Quinn) — I knew we had about 30 minutes to make up on first place and I knew it wasn’t going to happen. The third place vehicle was about 15 minutes behind us so we’ve been cruising it in since Urapan just making sure we didn’t make any mistakes. It was a good day.
TODD WINSLOW, No. 1081 (Winslow shared driving duties with Steve Achey and Matt Winslow) — CO-RIDER STEVE ACHEY said: We had a lot of close calls but what a great race.
ALEJANDRO MENDEZ, No. 1002 (Mendez shared driving duties with Jayson McNeal) CO-DRIVER JAYSON McNEAL said: Starting toward the back was a disadvantage but not just because of the dust. There were several log jams when some SCORE Trophy Trucks got crossed up so we had to sit and wait. Not having a GPS in here caused us to get lost twice.

RAFAEL NAVARRO IV, No. 1209 (Navarro shared driving duties with Vic Bruckmann) — Vic (Bruckmann) took the car from the start to San Matias and he had a flawless run and brought it up to a 30 mile lead. All I had to do was get in and keep the car in one piece and in the lead.
STOCK FULL
JOE BACAL, No. 8115 (first in class) — I think the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 that I drove solo last year for the win was easier. This course was really hard. I don’t know what happened but the summit was all blocked up so I decided to rock crawl around 10 people. I cut people off because I didn’t want to get timed out. I’m sorry for those guys but that’s racing. It was an amazing course but extremely challenging and difficult. We did our job and got the win and that’s two in a row. It’s a team effort and we kicked some butt.

CLYDE STACY, No. 844 (Stacy shared driving duties with Carlos Lopez) — Carlos Lopez drove most of the race. We did have a lot of problems but we kept it together.
CLASS 19
CORY SAPPINGTON, No. 1904 (second in class) — I raced this race in 2006 and we completed the course but we were three hours late. We had a rough start to this race. We had vapor lock issues for the first 250 miles. We made a little ice chest to put our fuel pump in.

CLASS 22
TIMMY WEIGAND, No. 1x (First in class and first overall motorcycle to finish. Weigand shared riding duties with David Kamo and Colton Udall) — I know with KTM and Kawasaki we are pretty evenly matched and it all boils down to who makes the least amount of mistakes. That’s how it was last year. Each one of us won a race last year. Just limit your mistakes, put your head down, do your homework and learn the course. Today went well. We all rode smart and kept it on two wheels. I don’t think there is too much hype on us and I like it (being considered the underdog.) I like people not talking about us. I like being the quiet guy. We’ve won in previous years so of course people are going to root for the other team and build them up. It is cool to have Kurt (Caselli) and Robby (Bell) and those guys putting in a big effort and coming down and racing us. CO-RIDER COLTON UDALL said: We had a fantastic race. I hold that thing (the motorcycle) wide open to the stop for over 30 minutes sometimes and the thing never quits. It is an amazing bike. This is awesome but by far the first and second wins I got with Jeff Kargola when we were the underdogs was amazing. I’ve got the bike at home. It’s my biggest trophy. My biggest events are racing in Baja. Right as pre-running opened I was here for two days feeling the course out and then a week and a half ago I came down again (to pre-run.) I know my section like the back of my hand. I can draw you a map of it. I felt like that is what it took to have the win. I kept riding up on Kawasaki and I was going down the rocks on the summit section before the wash and David Pearson and I were 30 feet apart. I was looking at him, and I wanted to pass him but the rocks are so big and you have to be so patient I couldn’t do anything. We dropped into the wash and I kept stalking him until finally he went high on something and I got him. I’m not sure he showed up for the rider’s meeting. In the last two races, visual check point 17 was a little high and the main line where all the trucks were going, was low in a wash. They said in the rider’s meeting last night that they changed it so he went up high where he was pre-running and I just blew right by him. It was like a breath of fresh air. One hundred and twenty miles of no vision is the scariest feeling you’ve ever experienced going as fast as we race. You don’t get to look ahead and see those bumps and rocks. I’m stoked that all the hard work we put in paid off. (Team owner) Johnny Campbell is still silently winning races. We are his puppets and can’t do it without him. CO-RIDER DAVID KAMO said: Colton (Udall) had a pretty good start to the day. He had a consistent ride over the summit. I jumped on the bike at Borrego at race mile 215 and he gave me the cushion for the riders behind us. KTM had troubles over the summit and Kawasaki had troubles over the summit, so Colton was just consistent which helped out. I got the clear air and went over to Mike’s Sky Ranch but got back into the dust with the Sportsman (motorcycle classes.) The traffic with the Sportsman was probably the biggest thing because it created a lot of dust. We are usually breaking trail and then you come up on slower guys and you’re in the dust and they are going half the speed you are going.  It set us back a little bit but we rode smart, kept it consistent and didn’t do anything too dramatic. We rode a safe race and kept the bike on two wheels and that is the most important thing.
KURT CASELLI, No. 2x (Second in class and second overall motorcycle. Caselli shared riding duties with Justin Jones, Mike Brown and Ivan Ramirez.) — I hit my chest and my stomach when I crashed and was worried about internal bleeding so our guy in the helicopter (Jones) got on the bike and rode the next few miles. I hit a rock and it is just so dangerous because the trucks pull the rocks up, making them bigger. There are so many trucks (pre-running) and they really beat up the course before the race even starts. I feel like we are motorcycles racing a truck race. You can’t always see the rocks when you are doing 90 miles an hour. As bad as it (the accident) was, it was a good finish. I feel like I let the team down but we were still able to get the finish. I was about a minute and a half behind Honda when I had the accident. CO-RIDER IVAN RAMIREZ said: It felt great when I was coming down into Ensenada (Ramirez’s hometown.) You can see the whole town and it feels awesome after a long race to be able to see the town from the top. It  feels great to see the fans cheering on the side of the race course.
KENDALL NORMAN, No. 14x (Third in class and third overall motorcycle. Norman shared riding duties with Ryan Abbatoye.) — I’m really stoked that I was given the opportunity (to ride for KTM.) I definitely enjoy a little change and the bike is really fast. It really has some potential so I’m looking forward to putting together some things for the future. We are going to have some homework to do for the Baja 1000. This bike ran flawlessly all day and I can’t complain. Right off the start I almost T-boned a truck crossing the wash and it set the tone of the morning. Not the best way to start my morning.
ROBBY BELL, No. 4x (Fifth in class and sixth overall motorcycle. Bell shared riding duties with David Pearson, Steve Hengeveld and Taylor Robert) — It’s great to be back here in Ensenada to get some points and get a finish. I can’t wait to get some more tacos and get a little rest in. I ended up having to do quite a few miles and it still wasn’t as many as Kendall (Norman.) That guy is gnarly for doing that many. It was a good battle with Colton (Udall) and he stayed right on me until I gave the bike to David (Pearson) in the physical lead but down on time. I guess he crashed pretty good and hurt his back so I had to ride his sections. Unfortunately Steve (Hengeveld) went down in his section. David and Steve are two of the most solid guys and for them to have issues shows just how treacherous this race course is. Anything can happen in Baja and unfortunately it happened to us.
CLASS 20
MARK BRADFORD, No. 169x (Second in class. Bradford shared riding duties with Manny Ornellas.) — CO-RIDER MANNY ORNELLAS said: It was a technically demanding course. The way the course is laid out, you either slow down and do it right or you don’t do it at all. You’ve got to go slow to go fast. I only pre-ran for three or four days and I could use another five or six. It was awesome. It is getting safer and safer and I am grateful for that.
CLASS 30
FRANCISCO ARREDONDO, No. 349x (First in class and fifth overall motorcycle. Arredondo shared riding duties with Shane Esposito, Ryan Dudek and Scott Myers.) — We didn’t have any major problems and just had a great time. We had a beautiful day without fog. We’re really happy. We were losing some oil when we arrived in Santo Tomas.
CLASS 40
MIKE PRUNTY, No. 402x (First in class. Prunty shared riding duties with Mike Baxter, Scott Myers, Lester Lehigh and Sterling Rigsby.) — CO-RIDER MIKE BAXTER said: I started with about half a tank on the inside and it has been a rough couple of days. I heard that Scott (Myers) hit a rock and ripped the radiator off the motorcycle this morning so I was a little late getting on the bike. All in all I had a really good day. The suspension is phenomenal and the bike worked really well.

CLASS 25
JAVIER ROBLES JR., No. 10a (First in class and first overall ATV. Robles Jr. shared riding duties with Mike Cafro, Jorie Williams and Cyle Chislock) — We had a clean race with no flat tires or other major problems. We started third and by race mile 85 we took the lead and maintained it the rest of the way. This was my first win in 13 years of racing. We finished second in San Felipe and this win helps our chances to win the class for the season.

BAJA 500 RACING HEADLINES 

Qualifying was held, as reported, at a private ranch at Ojos Negro approximately 2-3 miles west of the highway crossing alongside the race course. The location was unpublished to discourage big crowds. At the end there was no police or security force holding anyone back but the amount of spectators was low and very manageable. 

Qualifying was done by letting everyone drive one practice run and then at around 10am timed high speed. SCORE made sure that only a maximum of 2 racers are on the 5 mile qualifying course. A big field of trophy trucks showed up and a much smaller group of Class 1s. While Trophy trucks got a chance to qualify for total upfront starting position the fastest Class1 still has to start within the Class1 group come race day saturday. This is where SCORE went with a different approach from BITD qualifying where both classes qualify for total starting position. 

The fastest qualified Class1 still starts behind the slowest Trophy Truck so the qualifying reward is smaller then the Trophy Truck opportunity. Tavo broke a driveline during the prerun and had to change that plus a transmission in a hurry before his actual qualifying run. He looked very fast but spun out in one of the last turns and lost plenty of time to push him back to an estimated 14th position. Juan Carlos Lopez in the #18 truck went wide open one of the first jumps and nearly landed on his rear pumper. 

Overall SCORE's first go at pre race qualifying for starting position was a success. Roger Norman told us that he was very pleased and hopes to have this sub-event open to the public by the SCORE 1000 with spectating opportunities. BJ slept in and was late for qualifying, so they held it up for him. Baldwin was late and the racing authorities let him go out for another practice run after everyone else was completed. Tavo got to change a transmission before his run and after practice laps.

Baja Racing News is celebrating the 40th year of "modern desert racing motorsports", certifiable as the world’s craziest events, desert racing in Baja Mexico! Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s 45th anniversary of the BAJA 500, the original desert race produced by the race promoter,  SCORE, on July 26, 1974.

It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts with the green flag on Saturday (June 1) dropping first for the motorcycles and ATVs at 6 a.m. and several hours later for the cars and trucks.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - QUALIFYING A FIRST…
  
For the first time in SCORE Baja racing history, qualifying for starting positions will be held. On Thursday, May 30, qualifying for both the SCORE Trophy Truck and the unlimited Class 1 will be held over a special course near Ensenada.
 




BAJA RACING HISTORY

The race will feature a course of just over 500 miles that includes new or seldom-used areas as several new festivities will be held surround the event as the celebration continues for the 40th season of SCORE International desert racing.


This BAJA 500 Historic race course will be presented for the first time, LIVE! ONLINE on BajaRacingNews.com on Tuesday, May 14.

Colorful race week festivities will include several first-time events for Members attendance, the

GRAND HISTORY

 The BAJA 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were asked by Mexican government to take over the event in 1974. Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the Tecate SCORE BAJA 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE to Roger Norman in December of 2012.
    
Ensenada has been the heart and soul of the BAJA 500 as the popular summertime race.  This year will mark the 40th time it has started and 36th time it has finished in Ensenada.

""Ensenada, BC - The new owner of Score International, Roger Norman, has been the passion of Mexican fans in Baja, for that reason sought his support to prevent mishaps in the event to be held this weekend in Ensenada.
 
Norman said the Baja California and Mexican should enjoy the event safely and family, it will be a race to the history and full of ingredients to be enjoyed along its 500-mile route.
 
Several suggestions offered Sal Fish's successor at the head of Score, this for the viewers, as not to get in a curve out, the traps put no runners, no arrows to change the route and be in striking distance prudent to avoid an accident in the event of a vehicle rollover competition.
 
The off-road competition will have its start on Saturday 1st June on Coastal Boulevard and American promoter revealed that a ramp be placed before Ninth Street, and he invited the audience who can not leave the city to attend to that area, it will be recorded live for streaming online worldwide through the official website of Score.
 
This will be another first on a 500, which was made at the San Felipe 250 in March, live internet broadcast competition, not only at the start or goal, also in other parts of the journey, it will touch areas like Ojos Negros, Ejido Heroes de la Independencia, San Matías, Trinidad Valley, Camalú, Colonet Erendira and St. Thomas.

"I ran from 301 to ojos. Beach section was the best prerun fun I have had in a long time. From Santo Thomas to ojos was so rough, going to get interesting on race day. Stream crossing at Race Mile 450 is going to be a muddy mess. Be careful, there are a lot of rattle snakes out.

The summit is ruff the wash after it is really cool, gets ruff again near the 3 , but it looks like they tried hard to keep you off the endless whoops, road to mike is the same, after mikes it tightens up alot, there are some pissed off ranchers down by colinet. built some barracades. seems like somebody doesnt want going down the san rafile wash either. co dogs were pretty tired after opening 50 gates. beach sections were nice. The last 40 took took 3 hours.be careful at the beginning and the end the course runs 30 ' apart....taco were good in Valley t.

We did from Ojos Negros skipped the summit then to Mikes Sky Rancho, from Mikes to Coyote is probably the roughest tightest section i have seen in a long time, probably since the old 90's Mikes days. There is absolutely zero room for error in the section and since most will be here after dark its those who race this section will have to strap their 2 pairs on tight. We like shmucks drove our chase trucks through there, long bed 4 door dodge cummins and suburban, and made it through but took almost 5 hours to do 15 miles. Worked out because we ended up rescuing 2 of our prerunners. 

 Ran Mike's to Uropan yesterday in my Cherokee. From Simpson hill about the next 20 miles my jeep was the right vehicle. From 270 to Uropan is WFO pretty much. We cruised through the ranches and populated areas and all locals sealed happy and waived. Please respect them as this is their homes. Do a good job on closing gates so we can return. These cows are their jobs and losing them would devastate them. There was an upset rancher after Colonet. The Pacific section will be fast. Course is really cool and fun."

    RACE BRIEFING

1) COMPETITORS MEETING - will be held on Friday, May 31, @ 7:00PM LIVE! on BajaRacingNews.com
All teams must have at least one banded competitor in attendance.
2) CAUTION - All competitors are reminded that off road racing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or even death. YOU MUST BEAR THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL SAFETY.
3) CAUTION - It is important to remember that SCORE cannot regulate the conduct of spectators. Be advised that spectators will engage in malicious activity by building ramps, digging ditches and placing objects onto the course. BE ALERT!!
4) CAUTION - The roads used for this race course are open to the public. You must expect at all times to encounter traffic on the race course, especially oncoming traffic. Expect the unexpected at all times.
5) COURSE MARKINGS - The race course is marked with red/white ribbon, orange arrows, yellow/green wrong ways, and mile markers every 5 miles. Markings are not guaranteed to remain in place. All race teams are strongly advised to race using the official GPS course file.
 
6) ENVIRONMENT - All competitors must do their part to protect and preserve the Baja ecological environment. Please instruct your team that it is mandatory and very important to properly dispose of all solid and liquid waste.
7) PASSING - Four Wheel Vehicles that are in a position to pass a Motorcycle or ATV must NOT ATTEMPT TO PASS UNTIL THE RIDER HAS MOVED TO THE SIDE OF THE COURSE. RIDERS MUST REMAIN AWARE OF APPROACHING TRAFFIC AND MOVE OVER AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Riders, if you are caught by the first TROPHY TRUCK you must remain super vigilant and get off the course BEFORE you are caught by the next vehicle when possible. Riders must pull off the course to a safe distance and wait for dust to clear before re-entering the race. Four Wheel Vehicles are ultimately responsible for the safety of passing. Riders, if you rabbit to avoid being passed by a driver you will receive a DQ. Riders, get off the course early, if you wait for the four wheel vehicle to pull right up on you at night before pulling off the course you will be penalized. Riders, never race in the dust of a four wheel vehicle, you are putting yourself in extreme danger. If you are passed by a vehicle and you are still on course you are riding in the dust. Riders, if you are riding slow and you have been caught by the four wheel vehicles you are in extreme danger.
Drivers, if you are love tapped by a competitor, move over, blocking traffic is unsportsmanlike and you can be penalized.
8) RADIO FREQUENCY - SCORE will use 151.625 (Weatherman Relay) for the main race operations radio frequency. Please use this frequency to report an emergency or ask for help.
9) HIGHWAYS ARE RESTRICTED AREAS - Pitting is not permitted on any portion of the paved highway surface. The paved highway is considered a restricted area because use of the highways is subject to permission by the Mexican Federal Highway Police. If your race vehicle breaks down on a highway section, you must remove it from the highway before making repairs. Transitional race travel on the highway sections must be done in a safe and prudent manner. Passing on the highway section must be made on the left-hand side only and within the 60 MPH speed limit. All competitors must possess a valid driver license while racing or pre-running.
10) SPEED ZONES & COURSE COMPLIANCE - The mandatory IRC tracking devices will be used to identify highway speed violations and course deviations. Between the summit and Borrego racers will have leeway from VCP to VCP. Washes are open only to the banks on either side and major silt beds are open. Short coursing is not allowed. Do not make new trails by cutting the course-that is short coursing. Do not deviate from the main course even a little bit when you are near ranches, spectators or wheat fields. The GPS course is the official course. EVERY participant must have a functioning tracking unit in order to be scored in the race. Participants must make sure that device is turned into HQ immediately after crossing the finish line. Failure to return the device after finishing the race will result in a DNF. The IRC HQ trailer will be located at the finish line. All competitors that DNF must return tracking recorders before race course closure to IRC at the finish line to receive proper placement in the Official Results and points. Please see Penalty Bulletin for more details.
11) FULL-STOP PHYSICAL CHECKPOINT RULES - You are required to enter the 4 Physical Full-Stop Checkpoints in a single file manner and come to a complete stop at the stop sign. The checkpoint corridor is not considered part of the race course. Entering and exiting all checkpoints must be done in a safe and prudent manner in order to guarantee the safety of all checkpoint workers. Passing is not permitted 300 feet before a checkpoint. Pitting is not permitted within 300 feet before and 100 feet after a checkpoint.
12) VIRTUAL CHECKPOINTS - The race course has Virtual Checkpoints (VCPs). The VCPs are strategically placed to discourage short coursing. However, the VCPs do not represent the only areas that require compliance. The entire course will be reviewed for compliance. The standard penalty for failure to clear a VCP within 120 feet is 10 minutes. The time penalty will increase as the deviation increases. In order to avoid confusion regarding the locations of the VCPs, it is essential to race using the official GPS course file and check for updates on the SCORE website.
13) SPECIAL RULES - No race vehicle shall be towed, pushed, pulled or transported by another vehicle further than 1% of the total distance of the race course (5.0 MILES), or within 1 mile of the Finish Line. However, wrist banded race vehicle occupants are permitted to push a disabled race vehicle across the Finish Line. At no time may any participant go backwards on the course.
14) FINISH LINE STOP - All race vehicles are required to make a full and complete stop at the Checkered Flag, which is located at the Tecate Arch. This stop must be made in a safe and controlled manner.
15) LATE REGISTRATION - will take place on Saturday morning at 5:00AM at the Casino Room of the Riviera Convention Center. Late Tech Inspection will take place on the staging line beginning at 5:00AM.
16) LATE STARTERS - A competitor who is late for his assigned start time will start at the back of the class that is currently starting. The elapsed time of a late starter begins with the competitor's DESIGNATED START TIME, not the late start time.
17) START/FINISH LINE – The TECATE ARCH will be in front of the Riviera Convention Center on Boulevard Costero.
18) STAGING MC & ATV - Motorcycles and ATV classes will stage at 5:15AM for a 6:00AM start. One vehicle every 30 seconds for class 22 & Class 21. For all other motorcycle/ATV classes 15 seconds in the following order: 30, 40, 50, 20, 60, 25, 24, SPTM/C>, SPTM/C<, SPTATV, 26.
19) GAP - There will be at least a full 3.5 hour gap between the last M/C starter and the first SCORE Trophy Truck starter.

20) STAGE & START OF VEHICLES - will begin staging at 9:30AM for a 10:30AM start. One vehicle every 30 seconds in the following order: TT, 1, 10, TT Spec, SL, 8, HM, 7200, BC, PT, 6100, 3000, TL, 4000, 1/2-1600, 5, 7, 7SX, 5-1600, 2, 2D, 3, 3700, 1700, 4400, SF, SM, 9, 11, 19, SUTK, SPBG, SLTK, SPUTV.
21) FOUR WHEEL STAGING - TT(9:15AM), 1(9:20AM), 10(9:25AM), TTS(9:30AM), SL(9:30AM), 8(9:35AM), 7200(9:40), PT(9:40AM), 1/2-1600(9:45AM), 5(9:55AM), 7(10:10AM), 7SX(10:15AM), 5-1600(10:20AM), 2(10:25AM), 3(10:30AM), SF(10:35AM), SM(10:40AM), ALL REMAINING CLASSES(11:00AM).
22) DRIVERS will have 22 HOURS / (22.8 MPH AVERAGE) from their designated start time to complete the race. DNFs will be scored to the furthest mile using the IRC tracking data. The First 42 miles of course closes to all vehicles outbound at 2:45PM in order to have a clear course for the first bikes coming back in. Checkpoint closing times are as follows:

24) PROTEST - To protest another competitor, you must submit a detailed written protest to SCORE/CRB (Competition Review Board) at the Finish Line. The protest must be filed within 30 minutes of the final competitor in class coming across the finish. SCORE will consult with the Competition Review Board Marshal, and the matter will be heard as soon as practical. To file a technical protest, present a written protest and a $500 cash fee to the Technical Directors Jake Velasco or Art Sevedra.
25) UNOFFICIAL RESULTS - will be posted at BajaRacingNews.com at 10am.
26) AWARDS CEREMONY - will be held at the Riviera Convention Center Outdoor Amphitheater on Sunday morning at 12:00PM. You must arrange to have your trophy accepted by somebody else if you are not going to be present. No trophies will be brought back across the border by SCORE.
27) SPORTSMAN RIDERS - mandatory cut off will be from RM 101.60 at Nuevo Junction. Sportsman riders only will race south through Jamou down the goat trail. From RM 101.6 to the bottom of the goat trail is 12.73 miles. This Highway section is a speed zone for Sportsman Riders so keep it under 60mph. You will ride towards San Felipe on Highway 3 through Valley de Trinidad and re enter the race course at RM 230 Mikes Sky Ranch Road. The pavement section will be 12.27 miles and will have 127 penalty data points for speeding. Do not exceed 60mph on Highway 3 as the penalties are severe.
28) QUALIFYING – Driver who qualifies must take the green flag. Qualifying driver must be banded before qualifying. Registration will be open at the qualifying area between 7am and 9am. Location of qualifying area will be sent to the e-mail listed on your registration on Tuesday May 28th. One vehicle off the line every 4 minutes starting a 9am. Practice will be controlled speed and is open between 7:30am and 8:30am. Qualifying area will be on private property and is open to qualifying teams and media only, no spectators.
29) FUEL – Drums and dump cans with fuel cannot be transported legally across the border. SCORE recommends purchasing the Official Fuels, VP and F&L which can be purchased on the SCORE website through registration. You can use any fuel supplier and brand of fuel and that includes Pemex.
30) HELICOPTERS - You must register on the SCORE website and attend the aircraft safety meeting. Ivor Shear of Corporate Helicopters will head up the meeting.
31) CHASING – Always drive safely. Be 100% prepared the day before the race. Expect the unexpected. Leave early and expect to be late to your destination. Make sure each chase vehicle has copies of insurance for all of your other chase vehicles. Carry the largest fire extinguishers you can and have a good medic bag in each chase. Keep your passport with you. Have a list of cell phone numbers, sat phone numbers and radio frequencies for your team and other teams. Never pit within 50 feet of the course, give yourself room for safety. Do not pit close to a turn. No chasing on course. Going backwards on course gets your team a DQ.

SCORE 'Jefe' Roger Norman responds to sportsman "whining":

 "You are running in Sportsman and you call yourself a professional? That is very funny that you would say that.
I will look today, if you are entered, I will refund your entry 100%. I do not want to hear from you again on my e-mail. I am working diligently to preserve the sport and all of my decisions are with that in mind.  Now the motorcycles are responsible for 90% of the medical claims.  Insurance companies are refusing to cover the sport.  Think about it, you have the most incapable amateur riders racing with trophy trucks and getting passed by most of the cars.  There are serious injuries and sometimes death at every race.
THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ME AS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF SCORE!
If you are fast enough to compete in the Pro Class then you can race the entire 500.
You do not need to race in our series, as it appears there is no 'fit' for you as an amateur, that will make you happy.
This is not the first time you have complained to me, but this will be the last. If you are going to continue to whine about it, you will not be racing at all.

ATTENTION SPORTSMAN RACERS:
There will be a course cut-off for all Sportsman Motorcycles and ATV's in the upcoming Baja 500.

As some may remember, we had a short-cut for the Sportsman Classes in the San Felipe 250 , we will have one for the Baja 500 and we will have one for the Baja 1000 - it is how the sport is evolving. The Trophy Trucks and Class 1 vehicles are catching up to the sportsman riders (who have the least knowledge and experience about off-road racing) and every year there has been serious accidents, some resulting in death. So we are adding as much time as we possibly can add between the motorcycles and vehicles.

The insurance companies are refusing to cover this sport. And the reason is that the Sportsman motorcycles are getting hurt and the claims have been numerous. The Sportsman Class pays the smallest entry fee and uses most of the medical resources. The companies will not insure the race without us doing something to protect the safety of the riders.

Our goal is to have a dedicated motorcycle race with it's own TV show and sponsors etc. But right now, it is too dangerous for a Sportsman motorcyclist to risk being hit by a vehicle. Therefore, we are taking precautions to make the sport safer for our least capable riders. If you are not an amateur, and have raced in other races in Baja and in the US, then you could consider moving up to a pro class.

Edit  "we are asking for help in coming up with a solution, so everyone is happy. The best solution that we have come to, at this point, is having a dedicated motorcycle event the day before. We are diligently working on finding sponsorship for this. "

There are so many factors that go into organizing a race and we are doing our best for the preservation of the sport and its future.

It was warm 2 weeks ago and I'm guessing north Baja not getting any cooler before June 1". "Tres Hermanos over to Urapan, Santo Tomas to Coast and then south to Colonial Vincente Guerro, East up the wash and up and over to the back road north to San Pedro Martir road, then back way into Coyote and up the crappy canyon and the back way down to Mikes Sky Ranch, down the main Mikes road and left to EJ Killowas, into the back of Trinidad, up Goat trail and into bottom of pine forest right up to Laguna Hansen. Stay on route to 08 1k backwards around Rumarosa area, Compadre and then back way down and into Ojos, Right at the gate in Ojos and back to Ensenada".

Baja Racing News LIVE! BAJA 500

Nearly 300 entries expected
BAJA 500 to be held May 30-June 2 in Ensenada, Mexico.
Pre-running opens May 15 as 36 SCORE Trophy Trucks already in starting grid.
Entries from 35 U.S. states, 15 countries expected to celebrate SCORE’s 40th anniversary.

Following Tuesday’s night LIVE! drawing for starting positions, Southern California desert racing ace Robby Bell, the defending overall winner, will be the first motorcycle off the starting line in the upcoming 45th annual BAJA 500 desert off-road race.

Entries from around the world continue to arrive for the Historic BAJA 500, to be held May 30-June 2 in Mexico’s Baja California North, starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, the seaside port on the Magnificent Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of San Diego.

With SCORE Trophy Trucks and unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars qualifying for starting positions, Bell is certain of his starting position on, Saturday, June 1. 

Baja Racing is celebrating its 40th year as the world’s craziest motorsports, desert racing, in 2013 and this race is traditionally one of the most popular events on the sanctioner SCORE schedule. Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s 45th anniversary of the BAJA 500, the original desert race produced by Race Sanctioner SCORE, on July 26, 1974.

It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts with the green flag on Saturday (June 1) dropping first for the motorcycles and ATVs at 6 a.m. and several hours later for the cars and trucks.

Racers Notes
 
One of the top motorcycle desert racers in the world, Bell, 26, of Menifee, Calif., is a three-time SCORE season Class 22 point champion and he has four overall motorcycle wins in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 including last year.  In the 2012 race, Bell and teammates David Pearson, Panaca, Nev. and Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills, Calif., ended the 15-year win streak by Honda, giving Kawasaki its first BAJA 500 overall win since 1996. Bell/Pearson/Hengeveld ride the No. 4x Monster Energy THR Motorsports Kawasaki KX450.

DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY RACE

To enjoy the history-making anniversary race, entries from up to 35 U.S. States and 15 countries are expected with competition offered in 40 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs. Entries have already been received from Hawaii to Florida in the U.S., the U.S. territory of Guam, along with entries to date from the additional countries of Australia, Austria, Belize, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and host country Mexico. A total of 169 entries were accepted in time for Tuesday’s drawing and more than 100 additional entries are expected before the green flag drops.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - QUALIFYING A FIRST…
  
For the first time in SCORE Baja racing history, qualifying for starting positions will be held. On Thursday, May 30, qualifying for both the SCORE Trophy Truck and the unlimited Class 1 will be held over a special course near Ensenada.

A total of 36 SCORE Trophy Trucks and 20 Class 1 entries will qualify for their starting positions on Thursday (May 30), marking the first time there has been qualifying in the storied history of SCORE Baja racing. For the top two car and truck classes, their drawing identified their qualifying order in each class.

Drawing the first qualifying positions in their respective classes were B.J. Baldwin, Las Vegas, in the No. 1 Monster Energy Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy Truck and Eduardo Laguna, Mexicali, Mexico, who drives the No. 117 Speed Energy RPM Racing RGM-Chevy open-wheel race car.
    
BAJA RACING HISTORY

The race will feature a course of just over 500 miles that includes new or seldom-used areas as several new festivities will be held surround the event as the celebration continues for the 40th season of SCORE International desert racing.

Race Sanctioner, SCORE-International, has also announced the pre-running on the race course will begin officially on Wednesday, May 15, except for the portion from the start to Ojos Negros (approximately 35 miles), which will be used in both directions during the race.

When finalized by Roger Norman and SCORE Race Director Jose Grijalva, the historic race course will be another memorable example of all that Mexico’s Baja California has to offer, including high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to over 4,000 feet. The course will be another jewel reflecting the stark beauty of Baja California. 

 This BAJA 500 Historic race course will be presented for the first time, LIVE! ONLINE on BajaRacingNews.com on Tuesday, May 14.

ENTRY LEADERS

While SCORE Trophy Truck with 36 has the most entries of any class in the race including 4-wheel vehicles, other car/truck classes with double figure entries so far are Class 1 with 20 and Class 10 with 19. Leading the Pro motorcycle classes is the open Class 22 with seven entries in the start drawing. Class 24 leads the ATV classes so far with four and leading the Sportsman Motorcycles the SPT M/C> with 16 so far.

Colorful race week festivities will include several first-time events for Members attendance, the  
Baja Safari Mexico Club has scheduled Special Tours, starting with qualifying for Trophy Truck and Class 1 followed by the SCORE Kick Off Party on Thursday, May 30 from 7 p.m. until Midnight at the start/finish line area in the heart of Ensenada. Exclusive Access will be provided, to all these noted activities, including the Baja Racer’s Autograph Party and vehicle display starting at 6 p.m.

The Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, in the heart of Ensenada, will again be the site of many of the activities surrounding this years BAJA 500. Racer registration will be held at the Riviera on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 30-31, June 1) and the LIVE! ONLINE Coverage at BajaRacingNews.com will provide public internet access and live race updates, vehicle tracking and unofficial elapsed times.

In the Cathedral Room at the Riviera will be mandatory pre-race racer’s meeting on Friday (May 31). The post-race awards celebration will be in the outdoor Riviera amphitheater at noon on Sunday (June 2).

The start/finish line for the race will once again be adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center as well.
GRAND HISTORY

 The BAJA 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were asked by Mexican government to take over the event in 1974. Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the Tecate SCORE BAJA 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE to Roger Norman in December of 2012.
    
Ensenada has been the heart and soul of the BAJA 500 as the popular summertime race.  This year will mark the 40th time it has started and 36th time it has finished in Ensenada.

 In its 40th year as the Americans Mexico race sanctioner in 2013, the three-race 2013 SCORE Desert Series, with all three massive special events held in Baja California, Mexico. The season started with 27th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 (March 9-10). Both starting and finishing in Ensenada, the other two events on this year’s calendar will be the 45th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 (May 31-June 2) and the 46th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 (Nov. 14-17).
