Mexico’s beautiful but unrelenting and unforgiving Baja desert peninsula is being re-created on a 3.6-mile course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for 30 top racecar drivers seeking to qualify for the 47th-annual actual race TODAY, the BAJA 1000 2014 is ONLINE LIVE! in one week.

RaceWeek Starts Next Monday, November 10!

It’s a first ever for Las Vegas, and racing gets underway Tuesday night as a highlight of the giant Specialty Equipment Market Association convention. It’s so unique that it will be televised on CBS Sports.

Six Class 1 open-wheel racecars and 24 SCORE Trophy Trucks competing over the real 1,280-mile Baja California coastal run from Ensenada to La Paz from Nov. 11-15 will compete at LVMS.

The 3.6-mile-qualifying course at LVMS will incorporate off-road, dirt and asphalt elements, use two racecourses and require the drivers to use their lights and qualify in the darkness of the Las Vegas night.

All 30 of the qualifying vehicles will start their engines in unison at 4:30 p.m. at the SEMA SCORE Baja 1000 Experience to begin a procession of the high-flying racing machines to the LVMS Off-Road Track.

Las Vegas resident B.J. Baldwin

Among the drivers displaying their exotic racing machines at the Baja 1000 Experience in Las Vegas tonight and participating in qualifying for the Top Two classes of vehicles in the race is our hometown hero in the No. 1 position, B.J. Baldwin. "Other" Las Vegas racers include Rob MacCachren, Tim Herbst, Robby Gordon and Troy Herbst. Robby Gordon? From Vegas?

The Good, The Bad and SCORE

By: Gary Newsome

The Good: The storm damages from at least four tropical storms this season are being overcome, north of Los Cabos. The heavy reconstruction, generators, desal plants, sewage and water systems are well underway, but not completed in Los Cabos. Thats the Good!

The Bad: The bugs are insane south of Ensenada! Super aggresive flies and billions of no-seeums, gnats and mosquitos. This pest problem will last until mid December, throughout all of Baja Mexico.

The Baja South Health Department reports of thousands of cases of dengue fever. A common scourge, after tropical storms, vectored by the outrageous numbers of mosquitos throughout the state.

The Even Worse: The Red Cross throughout Baja Mexico is collapsing. The READER in San Diego reports that Tijuana and Ensenadas Red Cross has gone out of business. In San Felipe, the press in Mexico is reporting, the Red Cross there has been out of business for months!

In Baja South, the situation is worse. Unfunded by the Baja South government since the 2008 economic collapse, the Red Cross does not exist in any service fashion. One ambulance serves the entire city of the capital of the state, La Paz, over 210,000 residents!

Accident victims are being left on the streets. Emergency room visits can now become fatal, if you don't have proper insurance and I.D.

SCORE

The GPS Files are out of hand! Dan McMillin reports, his files have needed changes from three versions. The course is poorly marked with one week to go before qualifying. Trophy Truck and Class 1 Teams are on the ropes if they want to pre-run and go to qualify for starting positions in Vegas, next week.

Pre-Running Notes UPDATED!

*BAJA 1000 race course UPDATED! no time limit set yet, but it will be set according to a 25mph average over the final length of the course, total mileage is 1275 race miles, right now.

*Dan McMillin checks in:
"Quick recap of our pre run. We did Vizcaino to La Paz. Didnt see any silt leaving Vizcaino. But that was a Last Friday. Just tall grass with some gotchas. Vizcaino to San Ignacio, very rocky with soft sand. First 30 miles leaving San Ignacio may be the toughest section of the entire course. From the turn off off the hwy LEAVING San Ignacio to back on he hwy to El Datil. El Datil to La Purisima is the same, very fast with some hurricane damage. North Loreto to Loreto is tight and technical with water and rocks. Turns into a fun wash into the Dump and out of it. Wash to San Javier Rd is very fun, Lots of water but all rockbed. San Javier road is very good. Paved with some damage. San Javier mission to Hwy 22 is fast. Race mile 1085 to 1150, whoops whoops whoops. Last 100 miles to La Paz was freshly marked, and was different from what our GPS read. SCORE has released so many versions of the GPS file, it's frustrating. Make sure you have the "latest" version but it's probably gonna change when you're down here, like it did on us. Marking is good but inconsistent. Too much relying on the GPS and not physical markers. SCORE should place a physical marker so you can see one to the other, in line of sight. No where in the rules does it say you need a working GPS."

"Just pre-ran from RM915 to finish. We have to send a big thank you and congratulations to the entire SCORE team, RN, Jose Grijalva & Oscar Ramos, as well as local authorities for all their great job making the race possible to come down to the south. Thanks and congrats to the whole BFG mapping team too!

The entire trail from San Isidro turn off to Loreto has pretty much been graded! A lot of rocks and stuff, but everything is passable and we pre-ran in a 2WD F150.
Same for the section from San Javier to Maria Auxiliadora, where the locals were working with D8s making some REALLY deep arroyos passable.

The Score crew was out in a couple of Polaris, and did a great job marking to San Carlos more or less.
Be very careful once you come off the highway at Maria Auxiliadora, as it there is some very deep and sticky mud there... when we went through, it had just dried up enough to make a comforting looking hard to layer to allow you to get nicely stuck!

Those of you asking about the silts around Santa Fe... it bypasses them, as it goes up to the highway at Highway 1 KM111, and drops back into El Conejo at Highway 1 KM80. On race day, you will have to be VERY careful on this sections, as the locals always use this trail to go and see the race, and there aren't a lot of options for them to use another access.
From Conquista Agraria it is pretty much 80% new trails for the Baja 1000,

Definitely, it is going to be a tough and challenging Baja 1000, and Kudos to all involved it making the race down south a reality after such a big hit as the Odile."
