UPDATE July 8
From The Detroit Free Press

by Phoebe Wall Howard

FORD Motor Company Declares WAR on FCA Jeep Wrangler

""Josh Gracin texted Thad Szott in an attempt to get on a buyer list for the 2021 Ford Bronco. But there is no list yet, not even for country music singers in Nashville. "People are so excited to get their hands on the Bronco", said Szott, co-owner of Szott Auto Group in White Lake Township. "Every time I post something on my social media to let them know the timeline, I get about 10 people begging me to get them on the list. They have to go to the Ford website and pick a dealer. But people are, like, 'Please help me.' "It's not just hype, he said, "it's so real. "These are buyers who see themselves as outdoorsy and adventurous, or people whose parents had a classic Bronco, which was built from 1966 to 1996 and now gets top dollar among collectors. "I've always wanted one as a kid growing up in Westland, Michigan", Gracin wrote in an email to the
Detroit Free Press during a break at the recording studio this week. "The Bronco is iconic in so many ways — from off road, to just your afternoon drive with friends, with the roof off and plenty of summer sun. Before I could drive, Bronco production was discontinued and the stars have never aligned for me to own one. I’ll be jumping online as soon as they are available to reserve".

The big reveal for the 2-door and 4-door Broncos and smaller Bronco Sport is next Monday, July 13 at 2PM WEST, in partnership with Disney. The new model has been in the works for years, with Ford executives promising Wall Street analysts it will be a big deal. The Dearborn automaker has made it clear that the company plans to go after the market dominated by the Jeep Wrangler. "These are the free spirits, the wind-in-the-hair type folks", Szott said. "This is an emotional vehicle, similar to Jeep Wrangler. Bronco demand is going to exceed supply, no doubt. It's new. It's exciting. It's sexy. When you start removing the tops from vehicles, it creates all this emotion. Friends out of state want me to get them on a list but there is no list".

The Fight is real

Loyalty to Jeep can't be underestimated. Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader, said, "Jeep has been capitalizing on their heritage for decades, and not in name only. Jeep has proven that a genuinely capable adventure/utility vehicle with a nod to the past is what many people want. And that’s what the Bronco promises, if they can deliver an authentic product and, more importantly, communicate that authenticity laced with nostalgia, it will be a winner". He added, "The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator are exactly the kinds of vehicles current shoppers, young and old, want — both GenX and GenZ. The Wrangler puts them exactly where they want to be, out and away, immersed in nature, not likes, news feeds, data and crowded cities”. So carving into the Wrangler consumer group won't be easy.Ford knows what it's like to sit on top as maker of the bestselling Ford F-150 and F-Series pickup trucks. Ford has had that title since forever, just like Jeep has dominated the off-road segment for more than half a century. A spokesman for (FCA) Fiat Chrysler Automobiles declined to comment for this story.

People to leave Jeep is like asking people to convert religions

"The Wrangler's on fire". Szott said. "We're one of the bigger Wrangler dealers in the Midwest. We're literally going to sell out and not have a new supply for, like, a month. We're probably going to be out in 30 days. The demand has never diminished and factories shut down for six weeks because of coronavirus". Since restarting in May, business has been a "frenzy", he said. "The pace is maddening. I can't believe what we did in June. True Jeep people are going to stay Jeep people. Jeep is like an extension of our personality. Other cars are just like transportation". Getting competition from the Bronco will make the Wrangler even better and is great for the market, said Szott, who sells far more top of the line Jeep Wrangler Rubicon models for $55,000 to $60,000 than he does the Wrangler Sport model that starts at less than $40,000."They're way sexier with bigger, beefier tires, a 2-inch lift on the vehicle from the factory", he said. "It just looks more bad-ass  and it's designed specifically for off-road purposes", like rock crawling and muddy trails. Thad Szott stopped by Feeny Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Gaylord, Michigan, as he checked inventory levels around the state. Szott, co-owner of Szott Auto Group in White Lake Township, is pictured Monday beside a hot-selling new Jeep Gladiator pickup styled after the Wrangler. Thad Szott stopped by Feeny Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Gaylord, Michigan, as he checked inventory levels around the state. While a majority of buyers will never go off road, most like to have the option, Szott said."We probably have 30 Wranglers left and that's less than a 30-day supply for us", he said while delivering a vehicle to Gaylord. "What's happening is the used Wrangler market is on fire now. We're doing everything we can to get our hands on used Jeeps, and vehicle prices are appreciating. There was a vehicle we were looking at online at auction, a Jeep Wrangler, and we bid $4,000 over the average selling price and we didn't get it". Szott Auto Group, which has four dealerships in Oakland County that sell new Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Ford and Toyota vehicles plus all makes and models of used vehicles, sold 706 vehicles in June — exceeding the monthly average of 550. The top sellers are trucks and SUVs, led by Ram 1500 and Jeep Compass. He traveled the state this week to check on Wrangler supplies and found other dealers running low or empty.

 'Fun toy'

John Campbell, 50, of White Lake is an executive vice president at the Detroit Trading Company, an automotive data and technology firm. He drives a 2010 Infiniti G37S and he just purchased a metallic gray 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon for his 16-year-old son — a "fun toy" they can enjoy together". "Right now, we drive down dirt roads, trails and climb small hills. There are off-road trail parks all over the country.  We plan to take the Jeep to these parks this summer, where we can do hardcore rock climbing stuff". Campbell said. "The resale value is outstanding"

"Meanwhile, Michelle Campbell's brother-in-law Mark Lawry, assistant fire chief in West Bloomfield, is happy with his 1977 Ford Bronco — "a toy he loves". This 1977 Ford Bronco owned by Mark Lawry, assistant fire chief in West Bloomfield, is among many collector Broncos in America. Jeff King, vice president and general manager of Bozard Ford Lincoln in St. Augustine, Florida, said people have been waiting impatiently for the Bronco. "The excitement level is pretty high", he said. "I think we'll get more orders for the Bronco the day of the launch than we did for the Mustang Mach-E. I think we got eight to nine orders. The Bronco fits our market a whole lot better. And I think we're going to get some converts, but it will take a little bit of time".

'A long time coming'

King, 56, said he plans to order a Bronco as a daily driver. "It's a game changer for me. Now I can take the top off. It'll make it a vehicle I'll drive", he said. "I've been driving a Mustang convertible for years. Now I have a (2018) GT convertible", This new off-road vehicle puts Ford "into a completely different market", King said. "The catch phrase when they introduced Bronco was 'Beat Jeep' — two years ago. With over 200 employees, we’ve got more than a dozen Jeeps in our employee parking lot. There is nothing else that does what those vehicles do off road. And they own that market. I know we’ll get half of those (Jeeps)  ... Jeep people will have to wait and see what it’s going to look like. They’re not committal yet. But we're excited. It's been a long time coming". “With Jeep Wrangler sales looking unstoppable the past several years, Ford wants to return the favor in the serious off-roader segment", said John Wiley, manager of valuation analytics at Traverse City-based Hagerty, the world's largest insurer of collector vehicles. "As values of vintage Broncos have climbed over the past decade, Ford knows it has a large group of hungry Bronco fans out there", he said. "Over the past five or six years, the market for vintage Broncos has taken off. People spend between $100,000 and $200,000 on first-generation resto-mod Broncos. With the launch of the new Bronco, Jeep’s status as an icon won’t change, but Ford has long built innovative vehicles that resonate across generations. The new Bronco may be the latest in that line”.

SUVs, Sport Utility Vehicles

But the legacy of Jeep is deep, dating to World War II. It's what made a Chrysler merger so desirable to Fiat years ago. "In July 1940, the U.S. military informed automakers that it was looking for a 'light reconnaissance vehicle' to replace the Army's motorcycle and modified Ford Model T vehicles. The Army invited 135 manufacturers to bid on production," the Jeep website says."At first, Willys-Overland and American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company were the only two companies answering the call. Soon, however, Ford Motor Company entered the picture, and competition began among the three over which company would receive the lucrative government contract."The Army eventually chose Willys-Overland to build its Willys Quad, which led to the civilian Jeep."Willys-Overland would build more than 368,000 vehicles, and Ford, under license, some 277,000, for the U.S. Army," according to the website. "Willys trademarked the 'Jeep' name after the war."The first civilian Jeep was built in 1945 and sold for $1,090.Wrangler vs. BroncoGracin, 39, of Nashville already traded a 2012 Jeep Wrangler for a 2019 Mustang GT."I’ve waited a long time for the return of the Bronco," he said. "I feel the new design pays homage to the Bronco of old while updating the design in all the right areas."

Bronco R Racing prototype gives a hint of what to expect

Ford Bronco plans to battle Jeep Wrangler in the off-road category of rugged vehicles. Ford Bronco plans to battle Jeep Wrangler in the off-road category of rugged vehicles. Ford executive Kumar Galhotra told CNBC on Tuesday that the Bronco brand will "add substantial volume to the company and they’re going to be growth volume because none of the vehicles exist today”. Ford sees a “very large part” of Bronco consumers being new to the company, said Galhotra, president of the Americas and international markets group. But market analyst Jon Gabrielsen questioned whether Ford can penetrate the off-road market enough to recover the company's multibillion-dollar investment."Everybody wants the Bronco brand to do very well", he said. "But Ford is seeking to sell substantial volume into a very small market" segment that is dominated by Jeep — one of the strongest brands in the world. Ford has 70 years of experience improving its off-road capability, coveted by fiercely loyal fans who frankly would rather fight than switch.""

UPDATE July 7

*Special Off Road system said by Ford to be better than anything JEEP has to offer

*Ford expects the new lineup of Bronco SUV products to create “significant value” for the company as it attempts to tap into a cult following for the nameplate.

*Combined annual sales for the new Bronco models are expected to be in the hundreds of thousands, according to an unnamed Ford executive.

Back in the 1960s, the first generation Ford Bronco was nicknamed 'G.O.A.T.' for Goes Over Any Terrain. With the new lineup of Bronco vehicles, Ford is planning on making the SUVs the most off-road capable vehicle in their respective class. While the two and four door models specifically can probably go over any terrain from the get-go, Ford Icons Director Dave Pericak confirmed to Baja Racing News LIVE! in an interview that there will indeed be a GOAT mode included on the Ford Bronco.

The GOAT modes for the Bronco will help it tackle any landscape, while paying homage to its roots, which is something Ford loves to do. Pericak hinted that the Bronco will position itself ahead of the Wrangler through clever features and technology. This probably means the Bronco will get some array of off-road driving modes drivers can set according to the terrain. We would guess a GOAT mode is designed to be a do it all mode, not aimed at any specific off-road environment, but competent enough on all of them. Possibly, the Ford Bronco GOAT mode could be adaptive, where the SUV detects what kind of terrain it’s on and adjusts the settings accordingly.

This ties in with the Bronco’s
'Built Wild' tagline. Ford says the Bronco has gone through Extreme Durability Testing in labs and the real world, great off-road capability with standard four-wheel-drive and
'class-leading' suspension and terrain management systems. Finally, the Ford Bronco will have clever off-road design and ingenuity.

Overall, when speaking of the capability of the Bronco lineup, Pericak summed it up by saying, “it’s the car that makes the name, not the name that makes the car”.

Ford Motor expects the relaunch of its iconic Bronco SUV to boost both U.S. sales and profits, building off its cult following to attract new off-road buyers from the likes of Fiat Chrysler’s Jeep brand.

Ford is debuting its new “family” of vehicles, which will include two- and four-door Bronco SUVs on Monday, July 13. There’s a lot of buzz around Ford’s resurrection of the Bronco, a two-door SUV that developed a strong fan base after it was discontinued in 1996. “Combined there will be very substantial volume for the family of Broncos”, Kumar Galhotra, Ford president of the Americas & International Markets Group, told BajaRacingNews.com. “It’s such an emotional product, and we see a lot of value in that brand. That should in turn create significant value for the company”. Ford expects the new Broncos will be profitable, although Galhotra declined to discuss any more details. The automaker projects it will sell hundreds of thousands of new Broncos a year, putting the new SUVs among Ford’s top-selling vehicles in the U.S., Galhotra said. The Bronco SUV, both two- and four-door versions, will be available at dealers showrooms next spring.

Using the Bronco name on several vehicles is part of a larger plan by Ford Motor Company

CEO Jim Hackett plans to leverage the company’s most recognized and iconic names to assist in an $11 billion restructuring of the automaker. Shares of the automaker are down about 40% in the past year. Wall Street analysts have criticized Hackett’s lack of transparency and slow execution of his new strategy.

‘Built Wild’

“They’re going to add substantial volume to the company and they’re going to be growth volume because none of the vehicles exist today”, Galhotra said. “It is a net-add to the portfolio, net-add to volume and profitable volume”. Ford’s ad campaign for the new Bronco lineup, 'Built Wild', plays on the company’s current 'Built Ford Proud' ad campaign.Ford’s playbook for the Bronco family is to expand the reach of the previous two-door SUV with the new four-door model as well as the Bronco Sport, which will be built on a different vehicle platform than the other new versions. Kumar Galhotra is president of the Americas and International Markets Group for Ford Motor. Kumar Galhotra is president of the Americas and International Markets Group for Ford Motor. Ford also plans to capitalize on future customers who want to accessorize and personalize their Broncos, which helps boost profit margins. The company, Galhotra said, expects the Bronco to become the automaker’s top-accessorized vehicle, surpassing the Ford F-150 pickup and Ford Mustang pony car. “We have a very significant accessorization program that we’re going to launch with the vehicle,” he said. “We’re going to give them tons of opportunities to not just accessorize but personalize several attributes of the vehicle.”

OFF-ROAD, the New Ford Frontier

Off-road enthusiasts, led by Jeep owners, are well-known for spending thousands of dollars to customize and accessorize their products. While such things would traditionally be done by third parties in the aftermarket industry, automakers have been attempting to cash in on the nearly $46 billion segment by offering their own factory- and dealer-installed products. Galhotra said the company expects a “very large part” of Bronco buyers to be new to the Ford brand. To assist in staying connected with new customers, Ford has launched 'Bronco Nation', an independent online community that will allow Bronco owners and enthusiasts to share information, photos and events. It will also offer official apparel, according to the company.

The racing version of the new Bronco, failed miserably at the Baja 1000 last year, after much fanfare

Ford has steadfastly refused to answer ANY questions about this historic and monumental failure to even finish the race event!

Scameron Steele, who misguided Ford to do fabricating work with a couple of 'Geiser Brothers' from covid ridden Arizona. 'Scam', as he is known in off-road racing circles, has even been quoted as saying,
"I'm embarrassed for Ford that we pooped our pants so badly".

The Bronco Teases Must Stop!
Three Years of Teases

Ford released a video of a prototype of the new Bronco SUV off-road testing in January. Ford said Monday it also plans to launch four “Off-Roadeo outdoor adventure playgrounds” in the U.S. that will allow owners and enthusiasts to test the new Bronco lineup in challenging terrain. They are expected to begin in four undisclosed cities next year. “We want to make sure that when we relaunch this brand again ... we wanted to do it in a big way”, said Dave Pericak, Ford’s director of icon vehicles. “To have all three of these vehicles available at the same time, we just feel is going to be the right approach to establish this brand early, and making an impact and letting everyone know that we’re serious about this space”.

‘Unmistakably a Bronco’

That seriousness is partially what took the Bronco so long to come to market, according to Ford executives. They wanted to ensure the vehicles lived up to their namesake but also offered new technologies to attract new buyers. “You don’t take something like the Bronco and rush it”, Pericak said. “You have to make sure you do it the right way”. Customers have been waiting years for the Bronco to return. Ford first confirmed the resurrection of the Bronco in January 2017. Pericak described the new Bronco as “unmistakably a Bronco” but with features and material that are “very modern and progressive”.

The Bronco Sports Utility Vehicle will be produced at a plant in Michigan.

Editorial

The Bronco Push on July 13, is
The Largest Spotlight on Off-Roading
since the early 1900's "OverLand Craze".

Before World War I, before the Spanish Flu and before the 1918 Pandemic, there was one unique American fascination, vehicles going to places, creating a new national recreation.

In the period after the turn of the century, after the 1800's and into the 1900's, automotive developments were earth-shattering. Autos that ran on electricity, diesel and even water were developed and running.

The mass marketing of cars, trucks and their opening of a new form of recreation excited the public.

Locomotion had evolved from horse drawn carriage to self propelled jalopies. Now the question was, what brand do you choose? Who had the most reliable technology? Who had the best pitch (sales messaging)?

First came reliability runs. Second came overland prmotions. Then came the racing.

Racing in 1907-08 became the established form auto makers could prove their products.

In the extension of this reporting, which will be found HERE CLICK HERE we'll talk about the OVERLAND ERA. These efforts were not speed based. But, reliability and experiential based marketing, during the first growth spurts of the American auto industry.

The Bronco Push of TODAY, is much like this era and has the chance to transform the recreational industry into a new stream of consciousness. Rather than getting on planes, to very far-away lands, we get into the family car-truck-suv, to enjoy our families, our regional outdoors and ourselves at a different level.

UPDATE JULY 6,
bRONCO, "tHE bRAND"

The video, whew, lots of hyped puffery!

The news of a new Bronco is over three years old. BajaRacingNews.com has dissed the 'sport' model since we heard about it.

What we didn't know was that "Bronco" would be its own comprehensive sub-brand. The branding consists of the vehicles themselves, confirmed to be the 2021 Bronco two-door and four-door, plus the 'Bronco Sport' (holding our nose) compact crossover. You can get a taste of the models in our recent unveil from June 25, in the teaser images released long before the July 13 announced event.

However, they will exist on their own island within the Ford sea and satisfy a specific ethos of "Built Wild", (oh brother!) a sort of mixture of Ford trucks' "Built Ford Tough" and Jeep's Trail Rated designation. Unlike Ford's current crossovers and SUVs, the "Built Wild" Broncos will have undergone elevated torture tests in the lab, proving ground and real world; come standard with four-wheel drive and a terrain management system; and have the "confidence to go over any type of terrain".

Each will also share a common design language separate from other Fords and offer more opportunities for personalization. Now, to clarify, they will officially be called the "Ford Bronco" and "Ford Bronco Sport," but there will be a Bronco emblem on the front rather than a Blue Oval. Think Mustang rather than Lincoln. Or, within the off-roader realm, a Land Rover Range Rover rather than a Jeep or Ram.

However, there is more to creating a brand (or sub-brand, really), than introducing some new models. To that end, there will be four Bronco "Off-Roadeos", described as "off-roading and outdoor adventure playgrounds" intended for drivers of all experience levels. Basically, they're off-roading driving schools, not unlike the Land Rover Experience. Their locations are still to be announced, but the events are said to be starting next year.

There will also be "Bronco Nation", an online community devoted to the brand and new models. It will technically be independent of Ford, which seems like a sound legal decision given the inevitable reality of internet forums.

And of course, there will be Bronco merchandise. Lots and lots of Bronco merchandise, which Ford has already made available for sale on Amazon. In total, Ford seems to have borrowed a little from Jeep, a little from Land Rover and a little from itself to create something that's new, distinctive and reasonably authentic. Of course, we still need to see that actual Bronco trio to really know how successful it is, but at least we only have a week now to wait.

Ouch, that Bronco-R experience at last years Baja 1000 is pissing all over that 'Blue Oval" experience!

FORD goes over the top in pushing their new product line, here's today's presser:

"Ford Motor Co. and the Walt Disney Co. have made a precedent-setting deal for a “roadblock” across all of Disney’s broadcast, cable, digital and streaming channels in prime time to unveil the new Bronco.

On July 13, starting at 8PM ET, Ford will introduce the new Bronco lineup across Disney platforms. Three custom, 3-minute films will air on ABC, ESPN and National Geographic, in each network’s first commercial break. All three pieces will be made available on demand on Hulu the next day.

(Edit)This is the first time the “road block,” an invention used for decades by marketers, is being mobilized for a product reveal on Disney channels."

Ford Motor Company will reveal the all-new Ford Bronco lineup across Disney’s broadcast, cable, digital and streaming properties.
On Monday, July 13, three custom 3-minute films will air on ABC, ESPN and National Geographic, in each network’s first commercial break in the 8:00 p.m. ET hour.

All three films will be available on demand on Hulu the following day. Academy Award-winning director and acclaimed cinematographer, photographer and professional climber, Jimmy Chin, is collaborating with Disney CreativeWorks, Disney’s award-winning creative agency, to co-create network reveal stories with the Ford team. Ford will share additional content featuring the Bronco lineup’s capabilities and new features on its own social channels.

Ford Motor Company will reveal the all-new Ford Bronco 4x4 family on Monday, July 13 across Disney’s Media Networks – marking the first-ever, prime-time product reveal roadblock across Disney’s broadcast, cable, digital and streaming properties, including ABC, ESPN, National Geographic and Hulu. “Ford Bronco is an icon that has captured people’s imaginations and inspired them to explore the most remote corners of America and the world since the 1960s", said Jim Farley, Ford’s chief operating officer. “As a new era for Bronco begins, we’re proud to tap the strengths of epic adventurers like Jimmy Chin and Disney storytellers to help bring Bronco to life and inspire millions of people to get out into the wild".

Ford initially planned to reveal its all-new Bronco 4x4 SUV lineup in June at the revamped, outdoor-inspired North American International Auto Show in Detroit. After the coronavirus pandemic prompted auto show organizers to cancel the show for 2020, the Ford team reconceived the reveal strategy, aiming to pull in an even broader audience for its hotly anticipated Bronco debut. The Bronco reveal marks the first time Disney CreativeWorks, Disney’s award-winning creative agency, is deploying custom branded content, across multiple networks during prime time on ABC, ESPN and National Geographic. Each film will air on the respective networks on Monday, July 13, during the first commercial break in the 8:00 p.m. ET hour. All three films will be available to viewers on Hulu starting Tuesday, July 14. “At Disney, we take pride in creating culture and leveraging our unrivaled portfolio of brands to authentically and creatively tell stories during meaningful moments", said Rita Ferro, president, Disney Advertising Sales. “With Ford, we’re reimagining what a product reveal can look like by drawing upon our best-in-class sports, entertainment and streaming brands to bring the new Bronco family to life in a way that honors its heritage and gives viewers an unforgettable experience".

Here’s how each network’s custom film will reveal the all-new Bronco family:

ABC; Bronco will be featured in a 3-minute film starring country music singer Kip Moore during “CMA Best of Fest,” the Country Music Association’s three-hour concert experience, airing Monday, July 13 (8:00–11:00 p.m. ET).

ESPNFilm; featuring a different Bronco model and professional climber Brooke Raboutou will air during “SportsCenter.”

National Geographic; Academy Award-winning director and acclaimed cinematographer, photographer and professional climber Jimmy Chin will spotlight another Bronco during “National Parks: Yosemite.” Additionally, Chin will judge a hashtag challenge contest and appear in an Instagram Story featuring the Bronco on NatGeo’s Instagram account.

Hulu; On Tuesday, July 14, all three custom films will be available on demand on Hulu. The films will be available to viewers through interactive ad formats, and within a curated collection of outdoor and survival-themed content aligned with the Bronco lifestyle.

Ford Channels; In addition to the films created for ABC, ESPN and National Geographic, Ford also will share additional special content with fans on its YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter channels starting at 8:00 p.m. ET on July 13 – including additional details on the performance strengths of each new Bronco model.

The FORD Bronco Tease Convention Continues!

Told Ya', the Southern California Desert...

Maybe...Johnson Valley?

Updated June 29, 2020

We’ve confirmed with our sources that reservations will open for the 2021 Ford Bronco (larger body-on-frame model) during the July 13 reveal, just like Ford did at the Mustang Mach-E reveal! Both the 2-door and 4-door Broncos will be open for reservations.

Unlike the Mach-E which required a $500 deposit, reservations for the 2021 Bronco will only require a $100 deposit (fully refundable). The ordering process is expected to follow the Mach-E reservation/order model, where the reservation holder will choose a preferred Ford dealer at the time of reservation. Reservations will then be converted to actual orders when the Bronco order bank opens, upon which time the reservation holder can choose their final dealers (either original or new dealer) with which they wish to negotiate and purchase from.

By submitting an order and completing the Order Process, you are not purchasing a vehicle. Ordering does not guarantee you vehicle delivery, nor does your order guarantee a set-price for the vehicle. This will be negotiated with the dealer. Ordering puts you “in line,” and reservations will be scheduled to be built before stock units. You will be able to change your trim before the order is officially placed.

And as reported on Baja Racing News LIVE! earlier, that conversion date will be sometime December 2020, when order banks for the body-on-frame Bronco will open.

FORD BRONCO SUV deliveries will take place beginning April 2021.

Dealers! Will The FORD Bronco Be A WINNER in Consumer Sales?

The U.S. consumer and economy are returning to some semblance of normalcy, but the new-car business is likely to be anything but normal for the foreseeable future.

Dealers are facing a rare situation in many markets: Consumer demand is higher than supply. Online shopping metrics are off the charts across various online platform properties, such as Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book, as many shoppers are in need of some “retail therapy” and excited to take advantage of compelling incentive offers. According to BajaRacingNews.com’s latest look at the Bureau of Economic Analysis data, pure retail sales (non-fleet) in May increased 63% from April’s sales volume. The most optimistic analysts could not have predicted that sales would rebound so quickly in such a gloomy economic environment. This increase in retail sales has made an immediate impact on new-vehicle inventories.

According to our analysis of Motor Intelligence data, total inventory across the nation dropped 667,000 units from the beginning of May to the beginning of June, representing a 20% decline. The obvious concerns are the implications of the more than 60 days of no vehicle production, coupled with the fact that many of the auto plants are reopening gradually. Not only are automakers facing the challenges of mitigating the spread of the coronavirus in their manufacturing operations, they also face enormous supply chain challenges. An OEM contact recently told us they must look at shared parts across various model lines and make tough decisions about building some models at the expense of others. It will likely take anywhere from three to 12 months before new-car manufacturing returns to regular production levels. This leaves dealers with a challenge: How to manage their new-car inventory when the margin for error just got smaller?

We see key opportunities for big players & dealers: Turn to Earn

If you normally get 100 units in your allocation and order a few of the wrong combinations no big deal. But if your allocation is now only 50 units, you better minimize ordering mistakes.  J.D Power reported that 88% of combinations across the industry sell 50 or less units total on an annual basis. These “unicorn” combinations only generate 25% of the sales and often bring with them longer days on lot and lower grosses. Dealers need to focus on stocking the 12% of the combinations that make up 75% of the sales. Conventional new-car inventory management involves reacting to aged inventory.  While this remains fundamentally important, it is even more important that dealers have a clear understanding of “distressed inventory” on the first day rather than on day 300. This involves taking proactive steps to minimize potential for financial pain.

All OEM’s allocate production on a “turn-to-earn” basis. The OEM allocates the most to the dealers with the highest sales and lowest availability. Each straggler unit that hangs around punishes dealers’ ability to earn more of the “good stuff.” This is especially true for hot-selling products. Having a game plan on the first day for both aged units and high market days’ supply configurations means dealers can earn a higher percentage share of the OEM’s constrained monthly allocation.

Only time will tell if the FORD Bronco SUV will be a "Good Stuff", 'Hot-Seller'.
