Special LIVE! Reporters in San Jose

Edited by: Gary Newsome in Ensenada, BC Mexico

***One SPECIAL FEATURE of our coverage is a RETROSPECTIVE of surfing in Southern Baja with our OLD Special Reporter who was the official event photographer for the first Herbie Fletcher Cabo Classic back in 1991.

The bikini contest at the Presidente Hotel (don't try to find the resort now, the Presidente is long gone) the late night parties around the hotel pool (naked bodies, broken glass/beer bottles and the first ever presented event at the Cabo Wabo Cantina, with our reporter who had 'Special' access.

Inside the inner sanctum of the Wabo. Translated, cocaine parties with Jorge. The actual first panties posted on the bar. [Today, covered in underwear!]

Publishers Suggestion

Honestly, if you were jelly about the racing stuff we've done and printed in this rag, get out right now! Your head is going to explode seeing and hearing what happened - years and years and years ago! For those who decide to 'read-on', Eat Your Heart Out! [Language used to encourage feelings of jealousy or regret] ................

On the plane with the Fletcher's from SoCal-

Oh yeah, San Diego International departure and into San Jose International fly-in...I remember that! And the radio station rock party on the beach at the hangout that no longer exists...time flies.

Our Special Reporter, Caught! Busted! at 6:21 in the vid above

Our reporters images went global back then, in SURFER MAGAZINE.

He'll share his reporting and media captures, from back in the day, before the interwebs! Imagery never before placed on the internet. You'll never guess who was ON THE BEACH for this surfing competition!***

A brief primer, “In rock and roll we’ve got Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger,” surf journalist Jamie Brisick wrote in 1996, “in surfing we’ve got Dibi & Herbie Fletcher”

In 2019 Dibi and Herbie Fletcher produced the book,  "The Fletcher Family: 'A Lifetime in Surf'".

The Fletcher family

After growing up in Hollywood in the 40’s, Walter Hoffman, Nathans grandad, quickly became a mainstay of the Malibu crew who shaped the sport of surfing after world war two. In 1948 he took his maiden trip to Hawaii, joining local surfer George Downing, on his very first day on the island, out at 10 foot Diamond Head.

In 1951 he was stationed at Pearl Harbour and quickly became a leading light in the newly emerging big wave scene. He was reportedly one of the only non-locals to be accepted by the local crew, after he befriended Duke Kahanamoku. He would later become the first ever white member of the beach boys at Waikiki.

By 1953, he was charging 15-foot waves at Makaha and setting the bar during solid days at Sunset. After getting married and moving back to California, Herbie took over California Fabrics from his father, steering the company to become the leading textile provider to biggest surf brands of the day. In the following years, Hoffman coached his step-daughter Joyce to becoming the first women to ever surf Pipeline, and subsequently taking out two surfing world championships. His other step-daughter Dibi was a little more rebellious…

Dibi Fletcher is now a writer, unofficial Chief Operating Officer of the Astrodeck surfing-equipment company, and matriarch of the Fletcher family. Herbie Fletcher is a prolific and legendary surfer, shaper and entrepreneur. They owned the Clark Foam Franchise for the Hawaiian Islands, Herbie Fletcher Surf Shop in Dana Point, and currently own Astrodeck. The book is Dibi’s reflection on the mark that she, Herbie, sons Christian and Nathan, and grandson Grayson have made on the worlds of surfing and skateboarding. Contributors to this Rizzoli publication include Mike Diamond from The Beastie Boys, Steve Van Doren from Vans; artist Julian Schnabel; surfer Kelly Slater, and photographer C.R. Stecyk III.

Herbie Fletcher began his surf shop in 1976 after his illustrious surf career took him across the world. The year he founded Herbie Fletcher Surfboards was the same year he returned to the spotlight after the shortboard revolution, gracing the cover of Surfer nose riding on a bright red longboard.  Herbie Fletcher Surfboards was located in Dana Point and filled with Fletcher-shaped longboards.  His company was centered around a campaign with him hanging ten and a slogan proclaiming “The Thrill is Back”.

In 1975, surfer Jim Van Vleck developed Astrodeck, a spray-on urethane non slip coating for surfboards; Fletcher bought the company the following year.  After he purchased the company he created a peel-and-stick version, and turned Astrodeck into the sport’s best-known accessory.  Its success was due largely to the fact he personally distributed the product to every surfer. In the 1980s, Fletcher produced and starred in a variety of surf flicks, 'movies', now vids'.  Herbie as of late has created a range of art exhibitions, showing off his versatility in talent.  Herbie Fletcher is still recognized as a surfing legend and pioneer within the industry.
