UPDATE! Friday, October 18:
Loreto Anarchy Reported in the
aftermath of Storm Damage and
Road Closure in Baja South!

Local Press Report:

"An overwhelming wave of home robberies has been unleashed in the last few days in the Nopolo subdivision, and help is demanded from the authorities to locate and arrest those responsible for the thefts.

Pascal P. Pellegrino, resident of the area, said that in the last two weeks there have been six robberies in Nopolo homes and added that, even worse, is that they are happening during the daytime, when they expected there would be police patrols.

He explained that in these robberies, the thieves regularly take home appliances, like televisions, microwaves, modular equipment and VCRs.

Pellegrino said that in most of the cases, the people affected have come to the authorities to file complaints, which they supposed would help find those responsible and recover their stolen objects, however, he says there is little to no response to these demands for justice.

He said, finally, that the residents of this area, who are mainly foreigners, are asking for support from the municipal and state government to use their police agencies to guarantee the safety of those who live in this area of the municipality."

***QUALITAS INSURANCE COMPANY
BOYCOTT ANNOUNCED!***

BAJA SOUTH CLAIM REFUSAL CITED

!CLICK HERE FOR THE IMPLICATIONS TO THE SPORT!

*Racers, Chasers and Fans UNDER Insured!

***In the past, the liability damages imposed on an at fault driver who caused a negligent fatality in Mexico were capped at 750 days multiplied by the local Mexico Minimum Wage (approximately $ 50,000 total damages in most Mexican States). Effective immediately, that limit has been increased by the Mexican Government to 5,000 days multiplied by the local Mexico minimum wage (up to approximately $ 300,000 US Dollars total damages, depending on the Mexican State).

INSURERS NOW RECOMMEND THAT ALL OUR CUSTOMERS PURCHASE A MINIMUM OF $300,000 in LIABILITY LMITS, AND SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THE $500,000 LIMIT!

What happens if I have a current policy in force with limits of $ 50,000 or $ 100,000?
Each of these main underwriters, ABA Seguros, ACE Seguros, and GNP Seguros have agreed to honor the $ 300,000 Death Liability Limit on all currently in force policies until expiration. So you do not have to do anything if you purchased your existing policy on or before February 4, 2013 and it is still in force…regardless of the current limit on their declarations page, the insurers listed above will honor the $ 300,000 Death Liability limit until the expiration of any in force policies purchased on or before February 4, 2013.

***QUALITAS INSURANCE COMPANY NEVER RESPONDED TO HONOR THE SAME TERMS OF THE OTHER COMPANIES, LISTED ABOVE!!***

What limits do you suggest we choose when purchasing future new or renewal policies for Mexico?
We suggest that you now use the same level of care regarding Mexico Liability limits that you would use when purchasing a USA or Canadian auto liability policy. The radical change to Mexico Liability law means that claims for Death Liability in Mexico will now be similar to the damages that are often imposed by courts in the USA and Canada in similar cases.

UPDATES! Tuesday, October 15

***BULLETIN! ROAD CONDITION BULLETIN!***

As of October 15 , 2013

Highway One, the Loreto corridor is closed.   Baja Safari Mexico Club will inform us when the road opens.

PIC: October 14; Loreto crossing, deep, deep quick sand. Moving water from Octave.

SITUATION-UPDATED: October 17, 2013

REPORT, HWY 1 OPEN! "I was on the back side of Octave just before Insurgentes and stopped on the only piece of high not muddy ground I could find in Constitution.  Oct. 15th am clear skies and no wind, later midlevel cloud due to the moisture. The highway out of Constitution is under repair with a muddy one lane detour.  After that it was clear sailing."

*Racers Pre-Running Before Official Opening October 25!

Prerunning opens on October 25th, and the GPS files will be posted on the evening of October 24th on BajaRacingNews.com

*Andy McMillin announced as co-driver for Rob Mac in BAJA 1000

    *Baja Safari ONSITE Reports!

***The Puertocitos Road: The pavement is complete 42.6 miles south of Puertecitos, just before the military checkpoint. From the end of the pavement to Rancho Grande is 2.8 miles. The Pemex there was open. There is now a guard shack and gate at the entrance to Alfonsina's that check you in out... The remaining 36.1 miles on to highway 1 is in fair shape, not too different than it has been over the years. The rain didn't have too much effect on it. Coco is still there and doing okay. If anyone is headed that that way he could use drinking water, he said that he is short on it because he's waiting for parts to get his truck fixed. The whole region (both sides of the peninsula) from the border down to about the Bay Of Los Angeles road is quite green with all the rain it got.

*Baja Safari "Baja Crew": "We just drove it a little over a week ago and the road is great from Mexicali up to a mile or so of Gonzaga Bay and the check point and from there it is all gravel dirt and shale. It took us two (2) hours to drive to highway 1 at Laguna Chapalla. Make sure you have 4 wheel drive and high clearance."

***Pemex stations accepting credit cards on the mainland and in Baja with good success. Both credit and debit cards are accepted at Pemex Stations in Ensenada, Tecate, San Quintin and El Rosario. Farther south cards are accepted at Santa Rosalia, Loreto and La Paz, and the newest station in Los Barriles it is reported.

It is important to call the bank or credit card company at least 48 hours before departing from home so the bank can approve outside of U. S. charges. This is a good idea for any purchases we found. It might eliminate a call from Mexico to your bank. For fuel some banks ask for locations where the card will be used.

A good idea is to dedicate one card for use in Mexico with a low line of credit and have alert capabilities to your cell phone if you have data roaming. Where stations are using a mobil reader, the card in that case does not leave your posession.

Exchange rates apply at all the Pemex Stations. Pesos can be purchased at the Costco stores on Broadway in Chula Vista, San Ysidro or Ensenada all at bank rates.
Baja Safari would appreciate reports back from the travel public using credit and debit cards for fuel:

"In addition to the cities listed in the recent Chubasco, my credit card was accepted at the Pemex stations
in Guerrero Negro, Bahia de Los Angeles, Mulege, El Rosario, Ciudad Constitucion, and Cabo San Lucas.

Credit card tip: Get a card with NO foreign transaction fee and save the 2% -4%
foreign transaction fee charged by most banks. This fee is in addition to the monetary exchange fees."

Motos start at 11:00 PM Thursday night with two minute interval between each pro starter and 1 minute interval between Sportsman starters.

The first Trophy Truck (TT) goes off at 9:00 AM Friday morning, with a 1 minute interval between starters.

There will be a 10 minute delay between the last TT starter and first Class 1 starter, with the intent of giving the front running Class 1s clean air to drive through at the start, thus giving them a better shot at the overall win. SCORE has been criticized for making the Class 1s drive through the TT’s dust, making it difficult for them to catch and pass.

The 10 hour delay from the motorcycle start on Thursday to the TTs on Saturday is clearly a risk management principle to keep the TTs from running up the back of the slower motos, as has been happening. You may recall at the NORRA race in April a buggy killed a motorcyclist even though the motos left over 2 hours before the trucks and buggies.

As with the Baja 500 in June, there will be qualifying for TTs and Class 1s, and they are adding qualifying for the Pro motos and Pro quads. This is a good move vs. the former format of drawing for start position.

It is a definite advantage not to have a lot of racers ahead of you, where you have to eat their dust and pray for a chance to pass. The fast guys will be faster and the slow guys will be just as fast.

UPDATED September 20

MOTO UPDATE!

Bikes off line 11pm 14th, trucks next morning. This will offer an ~8 hour gap. You race a Pro class bike so you'll be happy (hopefully) to hear that all Pro bikes will be qualifying for their start position. It will not be the usual 22, 30, 40, etc... Pro bikes start will be mixed fastest qualifier to slowest. This will help with the dust & headlights situation as you won't be catching the slower riders and battling night dust. The start time interval between Pro bikes will also be 2min.

Problems for teams NOT PAID IN FULL AT THE TIME OF THE RACE DRAWING!

The cut off date to be in the live drawing at SCOREville is 11:59PM on October 3rd! Any incomplete entries will NOT be entered in the drawing. Entries must be paid in full and have no outstanding issues.

UPDATED  September 5

BAJA 1000 2013 BULLETIN! July 31

EXCLUSIVELY on BajaRacingNews.com Sources:

""The registration for the Baja 1000 2013 will open tonight at 12AM!! This year's race is from the 14th to the 17th of November. It is a loop race, start and finish in Ensenada, with roughly 922 miles of course now charted. Moto's this year have approval from the Mayor to start at 11PM on the 14th!

This gives them a headstart on the faster classes, without shorting their course length." "922 miles loop, starting and ending in Ensenada. 4-wheels will get the green flag early on morning of Fri Nov 15.

Some big changes for motos/ATVs: -Bikes will start the night before, Thurs Nov 14 at 11PM, creating a minimum of 8 hours between the last quad off and first TT. Understanding that this is an unusual change, 'every safety aspect has been studied and risks are being mitigated' (night dust, no helos flying, etc). Qualifying round for Pro bike/ATV classes to be introduced; qualifier 1-2 days before race day. "Short-cuts" for Sportsman bikes/ATVs and "timing-outs" are being determined. A "Pro Ironman" class for bikes is being introduced, with purse payout.""
