TEAM REPORTS:
KING OF BAJA & IRONMAN Francisco (Poncho) Septien
This years forty-seventh running of the Baja 1000 was a little longer than
that, as it ended up being 1275 miles, twisting south from Ensenada to La Paz.
Rider
Francisco (Poncho) Septien chose to Iron Man the event and was rewarded with
a hard fought win over seven other Iron Man contestants taking the lead for
the final time just 50 miles from the finish! Finish time 31hrs.
Rider quote!
Francisco Septien
"I choose to start in the back of the Iron Man class to pace myself with the
other competitors, by the time I got to mile mark 78 I was running 3rd in
class but as I came up to Tony Gera 702x he kept upping the speed and this
was too fast a pace so early in the race. I backed it down and let him go. I
headed south to Bay of L.A. where I ran into Tony again this time he was
having problems with his lighting so I told him to follow me to Hiway 1
north of San Ignacio where he could get repairs. San Ignacio I hooked up
with my team and they said I had the lead so I took a break and some food. I
got going again and rode to mile mark 930 outside Loreto to hook up with my
crew again, now they informed me I was 40 min behind Alex Smith 701x.
His tracking device must have been malfunctioning. I just put my head down
and starting picking up the pace. We pit every 50 miles or so and every time
I'd stop and get gas the crew said I was gaining on Alex. By the time I hit
Independence I could see his dust finally catching him. Man, we must have
passed each other 4-5 times, I crashed pretty hard trying to stay in the
lead handing it back to Alex, I was spent by this time and there still was a
100 miles left. With 50 miles to go I came up on Alex and he was down,
checked on him and he was ok, later I found out he broke his hand. I can't
believe all those miles and I get the lead 50 miles from the finish for
good. I was never so glad to get off a bike in my life.
This was a family and friends effort I want to thank all my sponsors and
supporters. This is a race I'll never forget."
